  • Ethnic minority shortlists dead

    by Sunny
    22nd May, 2008 at 3:37 am

A few months ago Sunder Katwala (of the Fabian Society) and I argued that having ethnic minority shortlists, where only non-white candidates were put forward for a particular parliamentary seat, to boost their numbers in parliament, was a bad idea.

The proposal is being dropped now. Poor Keith Vaz MP will no doubt be crying, because it extinguishes more opportunities for him to push his buddies into power.

So the government has bitten the bullet and realized that all this was a way of certain political cronies of Harman/Blears/Simon Wooley/Vaz etc getting cushy jobs reserved for themselves.

This also looks like the end of Respect. Today,s East London Advertiser reports that there have been behind the scenes negotiations between Labour and Respect in Tower Hamlets for deals guaranteeing the Respect lot seats if they defect.

The OBV camp must have known this was coming as they have just announced that they are involved in a year long survey which will give a “report” as to how more ethnic minority women can be encouraged to get involved in politics as there is a “democratic deficit”. What this means is that only a Gujarati woman can represent other Gujarati women etc etc.

Even the fire brigades have got onto this now. It seems that a fire service has to be ” representative of the community it serves”. That means that white people put out the fires in the white houses and so on and so on.

I agree with you Sunny on this one and it interesting that non of the usual suspects are posting here. You would think that with their cushy jobs about to go up the swannee they would have put up a bit of resistance.

With Harman out of the picture the all black lists thing is dead and buried. Blears is soldiering on but basically the whole thing is dead and buried. It started with the Jasper exposes back in December and is continuing. The night of the long knives is not over yet methinks.

I am disappointed with you all, I would have thought that such a hot button issue like this would have had hundreds posting. I think Sunny should give Simon Wooley a call to get his reactions. I understand that he has given his CV to all of the main three parties in looking for a parliamentary seat to fight. Now, if that isn’t racism I don’t know what is. The politics are unimportant, it’s race that matters.

The OBV website describes itself as “The home of black politics”. What exactly can “black politics” be when its inventor is hawking himself around to anyone who will have him?

Interestingly on the anti semitic front mentioned above in relation to McCain the same Mr Wooley is an admirer big time of Americas leading Jew hater Louis Farrakhan. It is not just white evangelicals who rehash the old slurs about “Christ killers”, black America is rife with it.

Last year Mr Wooley and other prominent black politicians hosted, and paid for, tours of the UK by two men with highly questionable pasts when it comes to anti semitism. The “Rev” Al Sharpton actually instigated a race riot in Crown Heights New York with his attacks on Jews and the “Rev” Jesse Jackson famously called New York Hymie town, a reference to its large Jewish population.

Prominent amongst those hanging on every word of two of America’s most influential black politicians were two people who represent, or don’t as the case may be, some of my relations in Hackney, Dianne Abbot MP and member of the London Assembly Jennette Arnold. Both of these are famous in the east end for only representing black people.

Dianne has organised a conference every year for the last three or four about the failings of black youths in school. That’s not any other of the hundreds of ethnic groups in London or even Africans, just males from an African Caribbean background. She is particularly not interested in white boys from single parent or poor families who do worst of all.

Ms Arnold has ordered an investigation by Transport for London into why more black children are knocked down on the streets of Hackney than any other group. She is convinced that it is racism by motorists and has nothing to do with the fact that a very high propertion of the school population of Hackney is black.

If you wrote that into Eastenders nobody would believe it even by the standards of the plot lines that exist at the moment but it’s true. I have pointed out here before that a group of Asian MPs have publicly distanced themselves from the all black lists lot only to be more or less denounced as traitors by Wooley and co.

I thought I would share that with you! Come on guys, I’m beginning to feel neglected, I like a good argument but maybe the “All Blacks” aren’t going to be drawn.

I see, the racists are mowing them down. It’s the only way to help the BNP is take over.

Not…The left really need to look at their own prejudices and whether their preoccupation with prejudice is actually significantly relevant to the world around them. Well, if they are to move to the centre and regain any sort of hegemony over the UK.

      Nice one Marvin,

The only problem is that the left have absolutely no sense of irony.

I was speaking at an anti BNP meeting during the campaign against them in London a few weeks ago and, at the end, when questions were asked for, a very” radical” young Asian woman got up and asked the platform what qualities did we think that an anti fascist activist should have.

The rest of the panel came out with the usual answers, struggle, solidarity, racial awareness, I,m sure you get the picture.

When it came to my turn I said ” Have a sense of humour and don,t take yourself too seriously”.

There was silence and then applause. I was glad to see that there were anti fascists with a sense of humour. Big up Simon Wooley, where am you response, innit?

One of the good things about this site is that it doesn’t close after three days like the Grauniad so that as a thread develops we can come back to it.

OBV have rehashed an article by someone called Ahmed Shazad which first appeared earlier in the year. Have a look It is clear they are getting rattled by the dumping of the all black short lists.

There is also a good discussion going on at CiF sparked by an article by Sunder Katwala of the Fabian Society, have a look and see what you think.
