So where are the right-wing anti-racists now?

    by Sunny
    10th August, 2010 at 2:00 am

Yesterday the Daily Mail screamed with this headline: Revealed: The UK maternity units in which only 1 in 10 mothers is of white British origin

The headline is incorrect for a start - this is the case in only one health trust across the country. See, I was under the impression that right-wingers didn’t care for skin colour, as they keep claiming. It’s the left which is obsessed by race and skin colour right?

So it’s bizarre that not a single right-winger or Tory MP is actually willing to say: ‘so what?’ to this. There is however Douglas Carswell MP who seems rather worried about the colour of kids being born in the UK:

I think we have to face reality and that is if you continue to have mass immigration it’s going to have a very significant impact on the demography of our country - and it’s going to have a significant impact perhaps on the sort of country that we are.

Doesn’t really sound like a right-winger who doesn’t care for skin colour, does it? It’s because this claim has always been rubbish.

Right-wingers only don’t care for skin colour when there is obvious discrimination and minorities are vastly under-represented in an area. When the issue of black babies comes up however, suddenly they’re all lamenting mass-immigration.

Right on cue, the BNP have posted an ‘endangered species alert’.

Why are we called racist, because we are proud of our white heritage? http://tinyurl.com/2v3c3pe

    2. Richard Leyland — on 10th August, 2010 at 7:32 am

Much as he’s a privileged arse in buffoons clothing, I’ve always thought that a redeeming feature of Boris Johnson is his sincere anti-racism. Still, he’s an arse.

    3. Obnoxio The Clown — on 10th August, 2010 at 8:18 am

Perhaps because not all right-wingers make a habit of reading the Daily Mail.

Unlike good progressives, who all seem obsessed with it and probably make up most of its paying customer base. ;o)

    4. Don — on 10th August, 2010 at 8:55 am

As we are inevitably going to have a slew of comments about being proud of whiteness and how far back ancestral lines go, here’s Charlie Brooker on the subject.

    5. MaidMarian — on 10th August, 2010 at 9:13 am

Sunny, when Carswell makes that comment, I suspect that it is not skin colour he has in mind. Notice how that comment you quote does not mention skin colour.

I suspect that by, ‘mass immigration,’ he actually has a certain religion in mind.

    6. Cauldron — on 10th August, 2010 at 9:15 am

Since all right-wing people are Daily Mail readers, this post proves with compelling logic that all Tories are incorrigible racists and that Socialists are the sole legitimate representatives of all dark-skinned peoples.

Clearly, any ethnic minority person who (1) supports the Tories (or worse, is an elected representative of the racist Tories); (2) is inclined towards capitalism rather than living on state handouts or (3) has wondered whether the PC movement was counter-productive is a lickspittle and an Uncle Tom.

    7. joe90 — on 10th August, 2010 at 12:05 pm

Outrageous article but its from the daily mail so why are we surprised.

It tells the mindest of the daily mail journalists and editors that they are obsessed with the colour of babies born in britian.

    8. Rumbold — on 10th August, 2010 at 12:15 pm

Not sure I like the title. Are people expected to condemn every story coming out? Why isn’t group x condemning event y, or opinion z?

    9. dmra — on 10th August, 2010 at 1:04 pm

“The headline is incorrect for a start – this is the case in only one health trust across the country.”

Actually the headline - while sensationalist and misleading - isn’t incorrect. It says

“The UK maternity units in which only 1 in 10 mothers is of white British origin”

The three lowest health trusts have identification rates of 9.4%, 10.2% and 11.1%. 1 in 10 would seem to be a reasonable summary of those results.

      So where is the inaccuracy?

    10. so what? — on 10th August, 2010 at 1:13 pm

So it’s bizarre that not a single right-winger or Tory MP is actually willing to say: ‘so what?’ to this.

Oh, come off it. ‘So what’, indeed. Are you really trying to say that to you, of all people, the ethnic composition of the country is irrelevant?

If so, would it be ok with you if England became more white? If not, why not?

    11. Bored in Kavanagasau — on 10th August, 2010 at 1:16 pm

I think there can only be one solution: have more babies. Have millions of black, brown and mixed-race babies. There comes a point when that demographic is so big that pissing them off means that the backlash is too high (I don’t mean violent backlash, but boycotts, losing votes etc).

      http://www.pickledpolitics.com/archives/8489

Which sub-Lee Jasperite came up with this nonsense?

    12. damon — on 10th August, 2010 at 1:42 pm

As we live in such a racist country (supposedly) then it would be bound to be of great significance - wouldn’t it?

Actually, that Daily Mail story is SO yesterday. Today we right wingers are frothing over this story:

      http://swns.com/jobless-scroungers-get-new-300000-home-101401.html

Since the villains of this piece are evidently white I think we can safely conclude that right-wingers are truly colour-blind when it comes to demonising vulnerable people. We’re also much better than lefties at coining fabulous tabloid headlines.

    14. Carl — on 10th August, 2010 at 2:31 pm

    15. TORY — on 10th August, 2010 at 2:46 pm

“Outrageous article but its from the daily mail so why are we surprised.”

Was in the Sunday Times first.

“I think we have to face reality and that is if you continue to have mass immigration it’s going to have a very significant impact on the demography of our country – and it’s going to have a significant impact perhaps on the sort of country that we are”

Nothing remotely controversial or incorrect. A simple statement of fact. Or is Sunny now pretending that demography isn’t related to mass immigration? Maybe everyone has the same culture?

    16. damon — on 10th August, 2010 at 2:48 pm

It’s also significant, as you get a rise in this kind of fundamentalism, in a society where religion was in decline since the Victorian era.

Because you’re an obsessive Muslim hater with no life?

That’s what someone I’ve never heard of before called ”farouk” just said about me on the thread about the Big Burqa Debate @ post 17.

I don’t mind, because this is only the internet, but I wouldn’t want to live next dooor to people who were like that.

I do understand though that extreme diversity also makes for a new and exciting future, where hopefully that kind of nonsense will fall by the wayside, in the same way as most people of a christian background lost their prickly edges in regard to religious matters.

    17. KJB — on 10th August, 2010 at 3:43 pm

      Where they’ve always been. Mordor.

    28. marcus — on 10th August, 2010 at 8:16 pm

You guys do know that the ethnic British, that is the 80% of Britons who form one of the oldest indigenous groups on earth, were never asked by anyone if they wanted their country to become ‘multi-cultural’ or be replaced by foreigners?

Why is it that I wonder? Why did no one ever ask? Or hold a referendum?

    29. KB Player — on 10th August, 2010 at 10:31 pm

Comment @28 - Yeah, the Norman Conquest pisses me off as well. If only we could turn the clock back to 1065.

    30. Barbarossa — on 11th August, 2010 at 12:10 am

nothing what so ever to do with the bnp, northern Irish loyalist you twats think strictly in racial terms and funadmentally what’s in store has very little to do with race it is ideological.

    31. marcus — on 11th August, 2010 at 7:53 pm

      @ 29

Your comment means nothing. What is your actual point?

    32. damon — on 11th August, 2010 at 10:47 pm

Coming at this from a bit of a tangent, but remembering that this thread started by asking about what right wingers think, and by a link to the Daily Mail story, I saw this fascinating programme a couple of hours ago on BBC2 about ”stolen brides”.

Reporter Lucy Ash travels to Chechnya to investigate the extraordinary practice of bride stealing. Young women are being kidnapped off the street and married to men they may never have met. Although officially disapproved of, this centuries-old tradition is flourishing.

From the moment a young woman is snatched, to her wedding one week later, Lucy follows the twists and turns as two families struggle to negotiate a compromise. She’s also with the mullah whose job it is to arbitrate between the two families and prevent the incident spilling into bloodshed. After a week of tense negotiations, she attends the colourful wedding celebrations where it seems there are as many guns as guests.

      http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00tf1w8

I thought of this thread while watching it, and although it might not be a perfect fit to the OP, our cultures can be totally and utterly different, and you’d wonder how much Chechen men bring with them and how much they leave at home, when they immigrate to somewhere like the UK.

A Daily Mail right winger might think about it anyway.

    33. RezaV — on 12th August, 2010 at 9:37 am

Douglas Carswell said: “I think we have to face reality and that is if you continue to have mass immigration it’s going to have a very significant impact on the demography of our country – and it’s going to have a significant impact perhaps on the sort of country that we are.”

Sunny commented: “Doesn’t really sound like a right-winger who doesn’t care for skin colour, does it? It’s because this claim has always been rubbish.”

I’m intrigued. How has “this claim always been rubbish”?

I doubt that even Sunny would claim that massive demographic change doesn’t have a significant impact on a society. Clearly it does.

I suspect that the “rubbish” comment alludes to his view that any such impact will be only ‘enriching’ and positive to a society (I presume, as long as those doing the ‘enriching’ aren’t white Western Europeans).

So where’s the evidence? Can Sunny come up with a single example of where massive demographic change over a short period of time has benefited the people and the offspring of the people already settled in a country?

Can we have any tangible examples of how the ‘white Anglo Saxon’ population of this country have benefited from mass third-world immigration?

We won’t get any examples because there aren’t any. Much easier to simply delete this post…

    34. Katy Newton — on 12th August, 2010 at 8:24 pm

Don & Jai - you are both lovely and the main reason I keep reading :D

    35. douglas clark — on 12th August, 2010 at 8:44 pm

      RezaV @ 33,

Who is it exactly that you want banned from coming here?

Everyone? As you might suspect of me, I am in favour of asylum seekers.

And who the heck is Douglas Carswell? He sounds like a racist nutter Tory MP. Your chum, perhaps.

Anyway, you have said elsewhere that you are an Iranian by birth. What is your view on other Iranians entering the UK?

I think the people of Auchtermuchty should be told!

    36. marcus — on 12th August, 2010 at 10:14 pm

Well you might be in favour of it Douglas but what about the rest of us? Why have we never been asked?

We are one of the worlds oldest indigenous groups after all, and we have collectively and generational built this country into the attractive prospect it is for everyone else today, we had / have the absolute right to have our collective decision.

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
