It’s the 2nd of January, and already
…that flat, end-of-festivities, beginning-of-work-misery, sudden-realisation-that-I-have-to-drive-to-Canterbury-tomorrow-morning feeling has begun to seep into my January-chilled bones.
I despair.
And so I thought perhaps we could all do with an open thread in which to wallow in our self pity together. Or perhaps we could cheer each other up with stuff.
Go for it.
(Er, usual rules apply – no politics, no serious stuff, just good old fashioned moaning. Or soft porn. Or YouTube humour. Off you go.)

this made me laugh:

As some of you who may have had the boredom to pay attention to my pledge for a buckowski xmas will want to know: yes there were narcotics, yes there was phycosis, yes much booze, yes there rattled the tortured soul in its cage, no I didn’t write anything worth reading
But I discovered you tube porn
On a serious note, there’s this asian website (I shan’t promote it) that has a forum that allows the gathered goons to put up porn. Which I thought was intriguing enough until it looked disturbingly like some of the dicksticks were putting up naked pictures of ex-girlfriends, twinned with vindictive messages naming & shaming them
Anyone know what the law says about this? It’s pissed me off enough to try & shut it dowm
that’s terrible – almost as barbaric as acid throwing by spurned lovers and ex-girlfriends to harmless girls in the Caribbean and South Asia when lurve doesn’t go their way.
Shameful. People should get used to rejection.
Happy New Year to the Pickled Politics family. Life is frequently unpredictable, but I hope the positives outweigh the negatives for all of you in 2007.
Tahir, yeah, almost as barbaric as acid throwing…. *worries about nutter on the other side, looks nervously at screen before hitting submit comment button*
happy new year everyone!! I got back from San Diego yesterday from a very hype street party, and am off to San Fransisco tomorrow. Should be a great drive up and a nice time there. See you all soon!
To everyone a happy new year, may all good things come your way.
Look at Sunny going off to his lovely American parties.
I’m happy for you, Sunny. Really.
And it’s pretty tropical here too. With the central heating turned up, I only need one jumper.
Breaking News: Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty is going to participate in the impending new series of Celebrity Big Brother (the British version, not the Indian one).

Crikey.
If I hear one Asian person cringing over her antics and go all ‘ooh she’s giving us a bad name with all her silly spoilt antics’ I’m gonna smash their faces in. She’s going to be appalling, yes, but we should revel in this and feel safe enough to mock her, not get riddled with embarrassment as some of us still do
Go on shilpa. Be a prat and be proud
I have not heard of Shilpa till now. tonight saw her entry into the house. Saw her in the clip dancing etc. yeah Bollywood! Shame that Indian film is represented by the most bubblegum of Bollywood but there you go!!!
It’s January and the entry of the tom cats into my flat. Every Jan straight after New Year get tom cats coming through the cat flap spraying on the furniture. Chasing my murphy with a great hard on.
Oh Murphy is a female cat that spends half of it’s life in my flat. She belongs to a couple up the road. Murphy of course is a male name. The owner swears she is a tom. But how can she be. She has got nipples and gets pursued by spraying toms.
William,
I guess Shilpa’s the Bollywood equivalent of Cameron Diaz. She’s generally been known in her career for “light” roles, although she’s also won awards for the best actress role in a more serious romantic drama called Dhadkan a few years ago (which was really the first time everyone noticed that she can actually act very well), and more recently she won multiple awards as the best actress in a film called Phir Milenge, where she played an advertising executive who gets AIDS after a one-night-stand with an HIV-positive ex-boyfriend (neither of them knew he was infected at the time). It was actually a brilliant performance by her — very poignant and quite restrained — and obviously it dealt with a deadly serious subject. She was the central character in the film, and it certainly wasn’t one of the usual “running around trees” Bollywood flick.

Jai
“She was the central character in the film, and it certainly wasn’t one of the usual “running around trees” Bollywood flick.”
Maybe I will check this film out then if it comes around. I in fact have mixed feelings about Indian films. I have seen some and thought this is great and seen others and cringed. But then have mixed feelings about Hollywood also. It is not necessarily just that I like Indian art house films there are some popular ones that I have liked also. Not sure how to spell them but. Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham was a great film. Also some of the classics were good. Pahkeeza, Awara. Sometimes the dancing and music can be brilliant, depends on the film.
I work at an independent cinema in Wolves so get to see different world cinema. Also looked into different aspects of cinema both western and otherwise as part of an MA in graphics. One dissertation was on a Tamil film, Kandukondain asking such questions as is Indian cinema already Post Modern.
The owner swears she is a tom.
How can she be at ‘om? She’s in your flat.
I hate this time of year. We’re always rushed off our feet at work and the Christmas deccies are up, but there’s no Christmas.
Would it be sexist of me to say that Shilpa is a right sort? My wife said she does nothing for her, but she does plenty for me. I have decided not to watch Celebrity Big Brother, just in case she is a prat and my “karma” is soured.
I lied.
I know a few people that think she’s pretty decent looking, looks fairly ordinary to me…
Old Pickler
“How can she be at ‘om? She’s in your flat.”
doh!!!!!!!!
Oh god.
They are remaking Star Trek with Kirk and Spock… with different actors.
This is a travesty.

I think I have just outed myself as a nerd. Do not judge me.
Embrace your inner nerd. Nothing wrong with loving Sci-fi after all everyone here has read Brave New World and watched Star Wars on upteen numbers of occasions.
@ Katy, No! That’s wrong, it’s soooo wrong! It’s like that idiot Lucas changing the Han Solo/Greebo scene for the new editions. WRONG.
@ ZinZin, I aint read BNW, although do own the Iron Maiden album of the same name…
Oh Leon, I know. It is wrong. And bad.
But arguably not as wrong and bad as this
Regarding the next Star Trek movie, apparently the guy behind Alias, Lost, MI:3 etc (JJ Abrams) is going to be behind it, so it may well undergo quite an unexpected transformation in style compared to previous films in the franchise.
Regarding Shilpa Shetty — for the benefit of those unfamiliar with her — she used to be a fairly lightweight “cute” type in her on-screen persona, until she decided to revamp it a couple of years ago and became very glamorous indeed, turning herself into the long-haired svelte leggy supermodel type that you saw when she first made her entrance to the new BB house. Apparently she pursues a fairly punishing exercise routine these days too, so she’s known for being one of the physically fittest actresses in Bollywood.
In a sense it’s a shame it’s in his hands and not JMS (creator of Babylon 5), he and one of the guys who created Dark Skies came up with a treatment for “re-booting” franchise a few years back: http://bztv.typepad.com/newsviews/files/ST2004Reboot.pdf
@ Katy, man oh man is that more WRONG!
Talking of TV, anyone else here like Peep Show?
Winter isn’t cold anymore, which is a tad dissapointing.
Give it time; winter now happens in February and sometimes runs until early March…
If they can remake The Italian Job, they can do anything.
I am surprised that you have not read BNW as Huxley has had a great influence on the 20th century and a lot of his predictions have come true. Read Nicholas Murrays biography. A great intellectual who is not given enough credit.
I will happily loan out my copy if your interested.
can != should
Soru, please, The Italian Job is a classic boys movie. Quality.
The only thing I imagine worse would be George Segal doing a remake of Enter the Dragon
Or George Michael redoing Stevie Wonder’s As. What you mean, he did? Ain’t nothing sacred?
Mentioning Star Trek. Tonight on BBC4 10.30 there was a prgramme on science fiction acting. Nothing could be worse than British science fiction of the 60’s and 70’s with it’s cloth and plastic monsters doing gawky clumsy baby movements and it’s workshop echo sound track. The New Generation seemed ok after thoughts of would it work without the original cast and characters. Maybe the new Spock and Kirk will become just as familiar, freindly and homely after a short while.
ZinZin, cheers but no probs I’ve a few people willing to lend me a copy, will get round to reading it one of these days…
‘Nothing could be worse than British science fiction of the 60’s and 70’s with it’s cloth and plastic monsters’
It was a Golden Age, damn your eyes.
I saw this, and it reminded me of a recent discussion on schools:
— but intolerance is intolerance is intolerance. If consensus, social integration, and general peace and love are to be advanced, we need to be more relaxed about religion and judge things on a case by case basis. Everything is ok in moderation.

I wouldn’t have adopted such a conspiratorial tone as the writer since – without meaning to be patronising — I think militant atheists know not what they do sometimes. I’m not seeking confrontation — even though I’m disappointed I wasn’t crowned belligerent pickler of the year
I’m reminded about my own position on the monarchy. I used to be an ardent republican, but nowadays I couldn’t give a toss (I think I’m safe in saying that that’s the majority view). I accept that the Queen etc is a symbol of the nation and a figurative head of state. There is no danger of a democratically elected Parliament’s — or more accurately, the government’s — sovereignty being usurped by the monarchy. There are also advantages to being born into the position rather than lying your way to it. In what way exactly would a politician President be significantly better than a jug-eared King? It’s not a compelling argument.
But then — and this is the key bit — I still feel I (and people like me) have more in common with republicans than with monarchists. I might tell republicans that I’m not really that bothered about it anymore and anyway, it is part of our history and culture, so why change it? But I don’t even mix socially with flag-waving toby jug-collecting Daily Mail-reading monarchists.
Na’at’a mean soops? Ya get me?
Having been a devotée of Startrek since it first started, I am obviously in shock, but own up, have you seen William Shatner lately? Even an old broad like myself shudders at the thought of him in spandex!
Oh, and wrinkly, green, pointy ears? I don’t think so, Picklers.
They should expand the Star Trek universe (pun intended) with new characters, rather then using the same old characters which have been associated with Nimoy and Shatner for decades.
“If consensus, social integration, and general peace and love are to be advanced, we need to be more relaxed about religion and judge things on a case by case basis.”
I’ve always seen secularism as a way to protect people from religious persecution or from attaining a second-class status for their religious beliefs. I don’t think secularism gives more power to atheists, which I believe has all the traits of religion, including faith.
