It looks like I, er, won

So says Georgina Henry today and as many of you have already pointed out. Thank you to everyone who voted for me, probably through gritted teeth. I will spare you the victory speech, you’ll be glad to know. Not because I don’t want to make one, mind you, but because I’m off to mexico within the hour and still have my packing to do. Be assured though, I’ll have an extra drink for each vote I got. I’ll become a legend in the bars around Tijuana….and they probably won’t let me back into the US border after.

So anyway, thank you once again to all those who voted for me. What a complete surprise, that’s all I can say.

Sunny Jim wins award – good, or bad ?…

Sunny Jim Bob, who is currently galavanting around the likes of Miami and Mexico, has been voted ‘Comment is Free’ blogger of the year. Congratulations amigo! Your hard work is paying off. But I do harbour serious concerns. My greatest fear is that t…

[...] And while I’m here, hell, if Sunny can tootle his own horn (he had ribs removed), then so can I. If only to demonstrate why you should be reading Pickled Politics RELIGIOUSLY. A little while ago I won the Guardian Student Media Award for Diversity Writer of the Year, predominantly for that old Apu piece; I was runner-up in the Columnist of the Year and nominated for Feature Writer of the Year. It seems, inexplicably, that the Guardian likes Sunny and myself. This, in my humble opinion, is more than ample evidence to support those who think the Guardian is tosh. [...]

    (*Desi Italiana smirking to herself*)

Er… didn’t you put up a post asking people to vote for you?! ;)

“I’m off to mexico within the hour and still have my packing to do.”

I’m sitting here squinting with jealousy in my eyes. I have acquired a fond liking for Tequila in the past few months.

And I’m stuck in the mountains where I hear coyotes howling at night, the wind velocity at about 90 miles per hour, snakes resting under the rocks, and the roosters waking me up at the crack of dawn.

Has anybody read Nicholas Sparks’ book “The Notebook?” It’s a lovely book.

    Sunny,

Warning. Stream of conciousness coming up.

Congratulations. I actually think you won it – ignoring these Floridan Diboldists on here – as much for your robust presence in the threads where you defend what you’ve said. Especially over the NGN.

It’s also true of the other finalists. And it is what blogging ought to be about.

And why I have a fair degree of contempt for Oliver Kamm and Norman Geras. They both run what are essentially newspaper columns on new media. Not so much ‘comments are closed’, no bloody comments allowed at all. Come to think of it, that is actually worse than print journalism. Judge, jury and executioner of adverse comments all in the hands of one person? Can’t be right, that.

It seems to me to be the case that their credibility will go down the hill, no, people will stop reading them would be more accurate, simply because they are caught in a trap of seeing an editorial a one way media. Which will never work.

Which is why I’ve actually enjoyed watching, over the last six months or so, CiF. Precious journalists having their more extreme ideas ripped to shreds in comments columns. By people who are obviously better genned up on their subject than the bloody journalists.

Nick Cohen getting fisted over ‘Well Im not in favour of torture, but…’ Been off the subject of torture ever since, hasn’t he? For a great writer, that was what he needed to be told, Nick baby, you’ve lost the plot.

Madeleine Bunting getting taken to task on ‘What is the Enlightenment nonsense anyway’. I bet she wishes she’d never asked. That was the most erudite take down of a print journalist I’ve ever seen.

And, an almost exclusive squeel from the commentators on Anthony Seldons desparate attempt to keep the subject of his hagiography (until proven otherwise) of our Dear Leader in the public domain. Rather that Bedlam, where it clearly belongs.

There were others. Anne Atkins thread was a train crash in slo mo. And a joy to watch.

Still, you’ll all be either pissed off to know, or delighted, that I think this is a much better site and you are all more fun. And if there is censorship, it is really, really deserved. Not arbitrary.

So, I’ll risk it. Happy Christmas to the lot of you.

Stream of conciousness ceases, ‘Oh, hi doc, no I’m all better now. Just fell over for a bit there…..

    Douglas,

“And why I have a fair degree of contempt for Oliver Kamm and Norman Geras.”

Norman Geras is an amazing individual. Don’t diss him. Seriously. He lectured me during my first year at University. And guess what? I’m one of the most powerful 22-yr-olds in the United Kingdom.

And by the way, I love Katy Newton

There: I’ve said it. Sorry Chairwoman.

I love your daughter. It’s a shame we don’t know one another. ;-)

I love you all. And yes: I love you Sid. Ya’ bastard . :-)

I love Pickled Politics. If I had the choice, I’d shag you all.

    Bastards. ;-)

    Just to let ya’ know.

  8. Amir — on 23rd December, 2006 at 2:58 am

    Yes,

I love Katy Newton and Clairwil.

    BIIIIAAAATTCH. :-)

And all ya’ other girls. Sonia – foxy Bong. xxxxx

    HAPPY XMAS. LOVE YOU ALL!!!

  9. Amir — on 23rd December, 2006 at 3:00 am

    Seriously,

If I wasn’t a Tory, I’d shag the lot of ya’. I’d shag you all.

    Really, I would. :-)

  10. Benjamin — on 23rd December, 2006 at 3:10 am

Sunny, old boy. The cool thing to do would be not to mention the Guardian contest on Pickled Politics, instead of writing two consecutive posts about… yourself. That’s the cool thing to do, like Woody Allen virtually never turning up at the Oscars.

  11. Nyrone — on 23rd December, 2006 at 4:28 am

…or Marlon Brando, who sent someone from the Native American-Indian movement to reject his Oscar win at the 1973 awards show and call the whole thing a disgraceful sham, run by morally bankrupt idiots.

Sunny, have you experencied any rascism in the US so far? and has the beard drawn startled gasps from onlookers?

  12. ZinZin — on 23rd December, 2006 at 10:04 am

Nyrone the native american-indian turned out to be an actress.

Well done pickledbashi. I look forward to seeing the goateed bronze statue in Southall High Street (just kidding).
Really, truly, amazing — and deserved.
I hope you go on to even bigger and brighter things, even if I’m banned from PP in the future.
It’s hard to find common ground between people of all races, ages, religions, and classes, but there’s plenty of it, if only people bothered to look and stopped being so full of themselves. I think your message is quite simple really and you clearly have the patience and gentle grace to communicate it effectively. If you can turn a few CiF militant atheists and people like suspectpaki, you’ll get the momentum you need. Who knows people like me might even relax their cynicism towards public-school educated do-gooders and revise their view of the dreaded veil, subject to clear guidelines about its non-role in the workplace. There could be something big here, as you clearly know. Whether that’s with Labour or with the Tories, or as an Indy or even a Lib, remains to be seen. I don’t think it really matters as long as you stay true to your ideals and continue to try to rise above tribal politics.
    Only time will tell.

  15. Jai — on 23rd December, 2006 at 12:04 pm

Congratulations again, Sunny. Well done for being a good Indian boy; your efforts don’t matter unless you come “first in your class”, as every Indian parent knows ;)

I’m just kidding — well done. Your family must be really proud, eh :)

Have a fantastic time in Mexico…..Latina lovelies, tequila without having to mention I/P first, arriba arriba.

Someone get a Mariachi band !

    Where’s my cheque Sunny?

  17. Sidhartha Claus — on 23rd December, 2006 at 1:01 pm

I want to have what Amir’s having, upthread. Crack and bad hooch, I suspect.

Is there a correlation between being Norman Geras’ undergard student and becoming a Tory intern? Geras is such a great man. Nowadays he’s writing about the benefits of torture and the spinning ability of Shane Warne.

What a man, what a man, what a mighty fine man.

Well said, it aint a blog/new media imo if your readers can’t contribute…

  19. Sidhartha Claus — on 23rd December, 2006 at 1:41 pm

Doesn’t Oliver Phlegm take to court anyone who dissents with him and writes to their employers to sack them? I believe his book is about, erm, totalitarianism. hahaha

  20. Anas — on 23rd December, 2006 at 1:54 pm

Well done Sunny, old man. As a sort of reward I promise not to mention Israel/Palestine in a thread for the next 40 seconds.

  21. Nyrone — on 23rd December, 2006 at 4:51 pm

Zin, wasn’t she an actress/activist/representative for the NAIM?

I know she involved in trying to combat alcoholism, obesity and diabetes among Native Americans and also drawing attention to some of the many injustices at wounded knee.

  22. ZinZin — on 23rd December, 2006 at 7:31 pm

Nyrone it turns out that Sacheen Littlefeather was part of the NAIM and she got a career in film out of Brando’s shit stirring. She also posed nude for playboy.

  23. Don — on 23rd December, 2006 at 8:34 pm

OK, so who should Sunny send in his stead to deliver a blistering condemnation of CiF?

  24. Nyrone — on 23rd December, 2006 at 9:44 pm

Right you are, she was an actress.
She posed for Playboy? Boy, did I not see that coming!

I wish she had read out the entire speech by Brando.
    You can find it here:
    http://www.nytimes.com/packages/html/movies/bestpictures/godfather-ar3.html

Reading the words in the speech, it’s rather upsetting to see how little has changed in our world in the last 30 years.
The twisted interpretation of history he refers to continues unabated.

Oh dear, did anyone read this:

Sikh teen lied about hair attack

The boy had told police he was attacked in Pilrig Park
A 15-year-old Sikh boy who claimed he had his hair cut off by racist thugs has admitted he made the attack up.

The boy from Edinburgh reported the alleged racist attack in November and the case was widely publicised.

The cutting of his hair was an act which was seen as deeply insulting to the Sikh faith.

Lothian and Borders Police confirmed the attack had not taken place and said the boy had expressed remorse. They said no further action would be taken.

More than 200 Sikhs from around the UK gathered in Edinburgh to hold a two-hour prayer vigil following the boy’s claims.
