I hate popularity contests

Oh boy, it seems enough of the readers at comment is free are mad enough to think I’m “a decent chap”, and have propelled me into one of the top four bloggers for the year. This is quite a pleasant surprise, though I think I would have preferred to be nominated for my finely manicured beard. It’s clearly a Zionist / Islamist conspiracy against the celebration of Hanukkah / Eid. Even more surprisingly the New Generation Network manifesto has been voted in as one of the top threads of the year. Wonders will never cease.

Anyway, if you are an existing CIF commenter or reader, feel free to go here and vote. I don’t want to be accused of using this blog to skew the results. I just don’t want to be last dammit. Let Dave Hill be last, at least he has a book out and has a loving family (which he keeps reminding us about, the lucky sod).

Best blogger vote / best commenter vote / best thread vote

    Congratulations!
Maybe next year for the beard.

  2. Nyrone — on 20th December, 2006 at 10:38 pm

    Congrats Sunny!
    This is quite a result!

I see that several people on CIF have mentioned (with praise) the fact that you return to almost all of your articles and respond to questions and posts…It Woz Da ‘Rapport’ Dat Won It!

What’s this about Dave Hill having a book out called ‘The Adoption’ which is available at all good book stores? That’s the first I’ve heard of it on these pages…

  3. Amir — on 20th December, 2006 at 10:59 pm

    For. Fucks. Sakes.

I can’t believe I just voted for Sunny. (And the NGN.)

    [*pinching himself*]

    I DID. What’s wrong with me? :-)

  4. Amir — on 20th December, 2006 at 11:02 pm

    Sunny,

“Let Dave Hill be last, at least he has a book out and has a loving family (which he keeps reminding us about, the lucky sod).”

Why? Don’t you have a loving family? :-(

  5. Clairwil — on 20th December, 2006 at 11:02 pm

    Aw Amir,
You’re a Pickler first and a Sunny baiter second. I feel quite moved.

  6. Vikrant — on 20th December, 2006 at 11:05 pm

    I DID. What’s wrong with me? :-)

Amir you are not alone. There used to be time when i used to call this place “Pinko Politics” look at me now… I ocassionaly write here!

  7. Vikrant — on 20th December, 2006 at 11:07 pm

These days i leave my tory self back at Conservative Home .

  8. Leon — on 20th December, 2006 at 11:07 pm

    What’s the prize for winning?

    What’s the prize for winning?

    Transltes as: Whats my cut?

  10. Refresh — on 20th December, 2006 at 11:40 pm

    I am genuinely torn.

I want to vote for Amir’s drunken housemate (you know, the one with the turban) but he’s not there.

I will have to go for Berchmans.

As for the blogger award, I will not be voting for anyone (Gary Younge, Salma Yaqoob or Dilip Hiro would have been my choice). Definitely not Peter Thatchell, even though I really did like him (his signed book is staying in the attic, at least until I get the chance to return it to him).

And Sunny will stay a second choice, at least until I see more evidence of him putting NGN ideas into practise (those bits that I agree with of course).

    Sunny,

    Congratulations.

    Amir,

You are not alone in a double Sunny, NGN vote. Although my finger hovered over young Messrs Foley and Hill for quite a bit…

What is noticeable about the bloggers that were nominated is that they all respond in their threads. Damn fine chaps, the lot of them.

    Nyrone,

A book? you say. By some chap called Dave Hill? Called ‘The Adoption’?

Probably one of those Urban Myth things we keep hearing about.

  12. Nav — on 21st December, 2006 at 12:32 am

    Congrats! You have my vote.

  13. Leon — on 21st December, 2006 at 12:48 am

    Transltes as: Whats my cut?

Haha! Not quite, the nomination was for Sunny and no one else.:P

  14. Dave Hill — on 21st December, 2006 at 1:04 am

Well, Sunny, I’ve been last since the start so it looks like you’ll get your wish! Mind you, I see you’ve surged ahead in the last five minutes, following Peter surging ahead and before that Conor doing it. So maybe he who surges last will surge the longest. Heh.

  15. douglas clark — on 21st December, 2006 at 2:05 am

But Dave, remember you have a book to promote. It is not good enough for you to post a post on here, (or there or anywhere), without mentioning your book. It is why we have all come to admire you so. Dave ‘The Book’ Hill, it’s got a sort of South London resonance to it.

Maybe you could persuade Georgina to let all candidates give an address from the platform, then you could, oh, I don’t know, maybe mention an important new book.

Why have I got to do all the thinking around here?

  16. douglas clark — on 21st December, 2006 at 2:06 am

    Tatchell’s having a bit of a surge!

  19. Kismet Hardy — on 21st December, 2006 at 10:49 am

It has dawned on me that vote is an anagram of veto. I’m not sure what to do with this information just yet as my brain has just exploded by this bolt of enlightenment. Maybe I’ll surf some goat porn first

    ‘being a decent chap’

    :-) aww..

    solid very solid.

{sunny – wouldn’t bug you about this as you’re on hols- but since you seem to be on the computer anyway! the diary cache doesn’t seem to be updating or is forgotting about me :-(

  21. sabinaahmed — on 21st December, 2006 at 12:00 pm

The Time magazine award this year to all 0of those who blog and do nice things with the internet. So it is a double whammy for the picklers and their Editor me think.
I been trying to curb my loathing for Sunny, for him being in sunny LA and me looking out at fog bound freezing landscape. But feel better since Desi said it is freezing there too! I know m mean.
Sunny seems not to keep away from his computer, starting new threads for PP, but seems to have shut down AIM, a bit of discrimination in my view.
But am really glad for Sunny and the NGN.
I hope you all are looking forward to a good time in the coming days, despite the fog and the grey days?

  22. Alex Cleaver — on 21st December, 2006 at 1:58 pm

Shameless self-promoter! And yet acts as if he doesn’t care about it! How insincere. How unctuous!

  23. sabinaahmed — on 21st December, 2006 at 6:26 pm

Arrrrrgh, what am I on.I cant even write a few sentences properly!
What I meant to say was that the Time magazine has nominated bloggers around the world for thier yearly award. And I think PP is surely one of the deserving site.Pheww.
I hope you all have a great time and an even brighter new year.

  24. Sunny — on 21st December, 2006 at 10:54 pm

Hello everyone, that came out slightly wrong. I also have a loving family (parents) but I was referring more to Dave’s wife and kids. Anyway, I’m not last so that is a huge relief. I seem to have killed off Dave’s chances though… erm… whoops.

Sabina – thanks and you’ve caught me out. I’ve been paying more attention to PP than AIM, but then the media industry is dead over December anyway. Nothing of interest going on. Actually LA is a bit brisk too… not exactly hot… though the sun is always out, which is nice.

    Alex – I know, terrible isn’t it.

Sonia – I believe that was the Harry’s Place effect. Peter has been a human rights campaigner for far longer than me so I can’t expect to win this. It was nice to be included though.

  25. Benjamin — on 22nd December, 2006 at 4:21 am

Ah, Sunny, old boy. The NGN Manifesto is tomorrow’s chip papers. I’ll have mushy peas and salt and vinegar with mine, son.

  26. Riz — on 22nd December, 2006 at 12:54 pm

Woo hoo! Sunny is ranked top blogger of the year right now!

But I do say, what, what, I am quite peeved that Armando Iannucci’s CIF blog isn’t up for the award, although I suppose his is but a pseudo-blog because it only contains his weekly articles culled from the Guardian, with no additional input…what’s with the delay(!). His latest piece, not yet on CIF, is a masterpiece, hilarious as always

    http://observer.guardian.co.uk/7days/story/0,,1973743,00.html

PS – Benjamin, I really wish chips were still wrapped in old newspapers. Mmmm…a possible untapped medium for advertisers…now there’s a thought, what!

  27. Don — on 22nd December, 2006 at 2:28 pm

    Congratulations. Sunny. Results are in.

  28. Siddhartha Claus — on 22nd December, 2006 at 2:42 pm

    hurrah!

  29. Jagdeep — on 22nd December, 2006 at 2:51 pm

Hundal won top blogger of the year? How will he be able to get his ego back through customs when he flies back from LA?

  30. Jagdeep — on 22nd December, 2006 at 2:55 pm

Best story of the season so far; the prinicipal dancer of the English Ballet is a BNP member (with a Chinese-Cuban boyfriend), the cheeky little gamine minx.

Actually I can just see Nick Griffin and that bunch of knuckledraggers prancing around in a pink tutu….

  31. Leon — on 22nd December, 2006 at 2:56 pm

    w00t!

  32. Leon — on 22nd December, 2006 at 2:56 pm

    Too much information!!!

  33. El Cid — on 22nd December, 2006 at 2:58 pm

    Congrats

  34. Jagdeep — on 22nd December, 2006 at 2:59 pm

    From CiF:

Blogger of the year is Sunny Hundal with 39% of the vote. Sunny’s already got a mug and a t-shirt from us so we’re scratching our heads for a suitable prize. Any thoughts?

    Well, any thoughts guys?

  35. Sahil — on 22nd December, 2006 at 3:10 pm

#34 I think he deserved it, but the previous article talking about British Neo-conservatives was dire!! I hope you don’t go down the Polemical route Sunny, you can write way better than that! Stick to your style and I guess keep it economical :) , it keeps the arguments neutral and focuses on the substance, anways you can get any hack in the blogging section.

  36. Jai — on 22nd December, 2006 at 3:49 pm

    Congratulations Sunny !

More lovely stuff you can add to your biodata on Shaadi.com, eh ;)

    *joking*

  37. Don — on 22nd December, 2006 at 3:57 pm

Will there be an acceptance speech? Sunny clutching his trophy and gasping ‘You like me, right now, you really like me’ as the tears stream into his beard? Or Father Ted style, with a list of scores to settle?

As for the prize, a specially commissioned ringtone cautioning “Memento mori.”?

Seriously, it’s a bold decision to put so much time and energy into this sphere and after all the stress and frustration you have earned one hell of a triumphant holiday season. Revel in it. And come back the old humble unassuming you.

  38. Siddhartha Claus — on 22nd December, 2006 at 4:05 pm

The first PP post. And the first and only commenter, fittingly enough, Don.

  39. Don — on 22nd December, 2006 at 4:20 pm

    aargh, I said ‘blogosphere’!

  40. raz — on 22nd December, 2006 at 6:08 pm

Sunny better get me a nice present, seeing as it was me spamming hundreds of repeat votes (and LOL at the Guardian’s crappy IT skills) which turned Tatchel’s 51%-29% lead into a 39%-31% win for Sunny. We Asians have to stick together you know ;)

  41. ZinZin — on 22nd December, 2006 at 6:11 pm

    Raz
Tin-pot dictators the world over will be demanding your skills and will pay handsomely for them.

That’s not what you were saying on the “Indians-have-small-penises” thread…? Hahahaha!

  46. raz — on 22nd December, 2006 at 6:22 pm

    Amir,

Well it’s Christmas time, the season of good will. And given the unfortunate luck of Indians recently (first Indian men with small penises then Indian women failing gender tests) I thought I might do them a good turn ;)

  47. General Musharaff — on 22nd December, 2006 at 6:24 pm

    My little Raz!!!

    I’m so proud of you.

You make me cry. With joy!

  48. Manmohan Singh — on 22nd December, 2006 at 6:30 pm

    Yes,

    It is true.

This is the other I/P issue: India/Pakistan. Perhaps not as contentious but certainly more spicy, more ghee and coriander and lashings of oriental hyperbole. And the 1the willy-sizing rituals are far more hilarious when its
