Intelligent vegetarians

by Sunny

Intelligent children are more likely to become vegetarians later in life, a study says.

A Southampton University team found those who were vegetarian by 30 had recorded five IQ points more on average at the age of 10. Researchers said it could explain why people with higher IQ were healthier as a vegetarian diet was linked to lower heart disease and obesity rates. [BBC News]

Do I need to say more (he says with a smug look)? Ok, I will. Up to 40% of people in India are vegetarians apparently, which looks high but that number has actually declined in recent years (via SM). Henceforth I decree that we will settle all arguments on PP through Mensa exams and IQ tests rather than penis-size comparing contests. Either way I win anyway, heh.

Hitler was vegetarian put that in your pipe and smoke it.

I remember reading in wikipedia that about 30% indians consider themselves vegetarian. But then a lot of people only eat meat 2-3 times a week.

Also, A vegetarian diet doesn’t necessarily mean a healthy diet. Lot of Indians have obesity and diabetis bcos of the sweets they eat.

As for IQ, well… being a vegetarian means you are enlightened ;)

    ZinZin,

    Something for you :)

Zinzin – I do plan to put something in my pipe and smoke it, but it’s unlikely to be your comment. :)

And I don’t see what that has to do with anything. Gandhi was a vegetarian too… maybe they can cancel each other out?

  4. MatGB — on 16th December, 2006 at 12:47 am

ZinZin; Hitler wasn’t a full vegetarian, he still ate fish and (IIRC) chicken.

Have to say I’m 100% with Sunny on this one. But then, I’d win either way ;-)

    Sunny,

“…rather than penis-size comparing contests. Either way I win anyway, heh.”

Just recently, penises have popped up on every PP thread – or, to be more specific, you’ve used the phallic analogy to the point of diminishing returns. What’s the deal?

    Are you bisexual? ;-)

Does anyone here remember a South Park episode when Mr. Garrison attempts to write a Mills & Boon novel? Altogether, he uses the word “penis” approx. 10,000 times. Which, in my opinion, is the going-rate for Kismet Hardy on your average political thread. :-)

  7. The Ill Man — on 16th December, 2006 at 2:02 am

Don’t much like vegetables Sunny. What can one do? Hopefully i’ll be out-evolved and we won’t have to worry about such things. Frankly I think my booze habit is a bigger problem though…

    Dear Desi,

“Sure, whatever you say! We believe you!”

My services are available at your request. :-) Right-wing monsters aren’t just ruthless in politics, ya know. Our hatred towards poor people, single-mothers, asylum seekers, and starving children helps us under the bedcovers. You don’t want a nice guy, do you?

    You need a bastard.

I love every man and woman on Pickled Politics. But there’s one contributor, in particular, who makes me feel especially horny. You could cut the sexual tension with a knife.

Her name is Suzzy [*romantic sigh*]

    She’s so sweet.

Veggies are largely middle class. Like cello lessons.

  11. Amir — on 16th December, 2006 at 2:24 am

    Don,

    I’m that rare specimen: a working-class ex-veggie.

Even if you’re a murderous, blood-gurgling, meat-eating Neanderthal, I recommend Quorn sausages and veggie burgers as an alternative to the fat-infested animal variety. They’re very, very low on calories (especially the sausages).

  12. Amir — on 16th December, 2006 at 2:26 am

I agree with the gist of this thread:

    Veggies are smart people…

    …but, if we’re honest, they’re also a bit gay.

A question: Who, if any, are members of Mensa? I am.

Do I need to say more (he says with a smug look)? Ok, I will. Up to 0.000001% of leftwingers and liberals in Britain are not apparently, which looks low but that number has actually risen in recent years.

Luckily for Kismet, he’s been taking the anti-Guardian pill.

What is 5 miserable IQ points when it is believed that it was a switch to a carnivorous diet by our ancestors 2.5 million years ago that made possible the increased brain size that allowed us to overtake our primate cousins? We’d all be still swinging from the trees if not for meat-eating!

  16. Vikrant Singh — on 16th December, 2006 at 6:56 am

i scored 2290 on SAT. If i’d done this a few years ago i’d been automatically inducted into Mensa!

  24. William — on 16th December, 2006 at 5:22 pm

The fact that a lot of white people are veggie these days has a lot to do with the 60’s. Before that they were considered cranks. it was interesting that so many of the people who turned veggie were influenced by Hindu philosophy in some way at least that’s what I remember. (here he goes again!!). As well, at first there were so many people who just hadn’t got a clue. Some people who grew up on meat and two veg just thought you took a away the meat and left two veg. I was influenced by friends and a particular girlfriend who in fact started to include rabbit food in here diet. (this is literally true). One dish she cooked made me feel sick. People got the hang of it with the whole food movement, setting up whole food shops and exploring food and recipes from other cultures.

I knew a guy who once tried to make his cats vegetarian. Their systems are simply not built for it. The cats were weak small and scraggy. It was stupid cruelty.

Oh by the way it’s amazing what you can do with a jar of Tahini and ajar of Vecon. For examply one can have marmalade and Tahini on toast or
Vecon and Tahini on toast, yum!

I wonder if the samosa Sunita Willimas took in space is vegiterian?

    Meat eaters are confused people
I eat pigs but I wont eat a dog –english
I eat beef but I wont eat a horse –americans
I eat a sheep but wont eat a pig –muslims
I eat a chicken but wont eat beef –hindus

  35. Don — on 18th December, 2006 at 9:49 pm

I’d have to be very hungry. But the article didn’t mention canibalism.

what are your feelings on cannibalism?

that article makes assumptions in the same way that some people who assumes that all muslims are terrorist and evil.
damn cannibals are on this forum too!

  37. ZinZin — on 19th December, 2006 at 8:12 pm

    zin zin

Only if i am really hungary.

I linked to that article as it makes a mockery of the moral superiority that vegetarians claim to have over their omnivorous counterparts.

As for the intelligence claims not buying it. The environmental and ethical arguments against meat production are worth a hearing.

  38. Don — on 19th December, 2006 at 9:26 pm

Nope. Definition of the term, a vegetarian doesn’t eat fish or chicken. Some people refer to themselves as vege and do, but they’re pescetarians in the case of fish, and damn idjit fools in the case of chicken.

Calling yourself something != being something. Otherwise Sunny would actually be good looking…

  41. Don — on 20th December, 2006 at 12:01 am

    Eat fish and game.

  42. Simon Barrow — on 20th December, 2006 at 8:36 pm

I know someone who keeps hoping that if you smoke a fish it might turn into a vegetable. In fact I’m married to her. But we still manage to live in a meat-free, fish-free (and, as matter of fact, child free) relationship.

  43. Amir — on 20th December, 2006 at 9:07 pm

    ZinZin

Only if i am really hungary.

I’d rather be Switzerland or Latvia.

  44. Don — on 20th December, 2006 at 9:53 pm

If you smoke a fish, you might turn into a vegetable. That stuff’s worse than banana skins.

  45. Anon+1 — on 21st December, 2006 at 2:53 pm

Okay whats the jist of this?

Eating nothing but veg makes you more intelligent.
    or
Being of higher intellect you realise something about meat products and make the switch.

+ how can you use Hitler to try and dispute this when the man (warped as he may be) was a genius.

  46. Chairwoman — on 21st December, 2006 at 4:08 pm

    Excuse me?

  47. Kismet Hardy — on 21st December, 2006 at 4:30 pm

    Hitler loved animals and children?!

  48. Chairwoman — on 21st December, 2006 at 4:47 pm

Yeah Kismet, he loved his German Shepherd Dog, Blondie, so much, that he shot her before he topped himself! I’ve seen newsreel of him with his dog, and she acted like a dog that obeyed from fear rather than love.

As for children, only Aryan children.

  49. Jai — on 21st December, 2006 at 5:04 pm

“Genius” is the wrong term for Hitler. “Diabolically clever” and “psychopath” would be more accurate.

I also find it amusing (shall I say “warped”) that an a person from Britain would refer to Hitler as a “genius”, considering his plans for the UK if it had been defeated by the Nazis — indeed, considering the fact that Britain was on the receiving end of an aggressive war led by Hitler which resulted in considerable civilian and military British casualties.

  50. Chairwoman — on 21st December, 2006 at 5:12 pm

Jai – I’m not even bothering to try and have a rational discussion about this. The man was a megalomaniac who tried to anihililate races because he didn’t like them, caused the death of millions, and brought disaster upon his own people.

    Enough said.

  51. Siddhartha Claus — on 21st December, 2006 at 5:13 pm

Adolf and Witty went to the same school.
Not a lot of people know that…

  52. Don — on 21st December, 2006 at 5:17 pm

To be fair to Anon+1, I think he may have been making the point that the link is veggies to intelligence, not sanity or morality.

But I would still not accept Hitler as being possessed of any great intellectual powers, I’ve never seen that put forward by any serious historian.

  53. Don — on 21st December, 2006 at 5:23 pm

Bloody hell, Sid. That’s a gem.

  54. William — on 21st December, 2006 at 5:34 pm

Apparently when the alies, Americans I think, found Hitlers library it was full of cowboy novels and did not find any renowned books. As well, apparently his favourite film was “The Bengal Lancers”

As well if we compare Mein Kampf with

    “Das Kapital”
    “The Wealth of Nations”
    “On Liberty”
    “The Age of Reason”
    etc etc etc

    enough said!

  55. William — on 21st December, 2006 at 5:35 pm

  57. Anon+1 — on 21st December, 2006 at 6:09 pm

Believe me I despise Hitler as much as the next person, theres no debate needed on that count and the fact i used to be in the army myself we get taught a few things on history.
All im saying was to get so many people behind him and bring about so much, through propaganda or otherwise that the guy needed some kind of intelligence.

  58. William — on 21st December, 2006 at 6:19 pm

    Anon+1

I would in fact agree that he had to have some kind of thinking skills even complex ones in order to scheme and also plan as in making military decisions etc. Possibly they are highly specific in certain areas.

  59. Anon+1 — on 21st December, 2006 at 8:37 pm

    Thats my point exactly.
I find it quite funny that because of Hitlers actions that go against other peoples, hes labeled by zinzin as stupid.
Someone once said the world was round at a time when we all thought it was flat, and he was saw as a thickie too.

(In anticipation of the flames, im not saying Hitler was right because he wasnt, im just saying calling people stupid because their ideas are different to yours make you seem the stupid one, so zip up that fly)

  60. Clairwil — on 22nd December, 2006 at 12:18 am

As far as I’m aware Hitler had a pretty mediocre intellect. Perhaps delusional is a better word for him.

As I can’t get into the willy waving I would like you all to know that Mr Clairwil is not only impressive but skilled.

  61. Anon+1 — on 22nd December, 2006 at 1:58 pm
