  • Benjamin Netanyahu caught saying what he really thinks

    by Sunny
    19th July, 2010 at 10:02 am

Bizarre this hasn’t made more of a splash. Tablet Magazine reports:

Meeting with Benjamin Netanyahu last week, President Obama could not have been more effusive. “I believe Prime Minister Netanyahu wants peace,” Obama said. “I believe he is ready to take risks for peace.”

A newly revealed tape of Netanyahu in 2001, being interviewed while he thinks the cameras are off, shows him in a radically different light. In it, Netanyahu dismisses American foreign policy as easy to maneuver, boasts of having derailed the Oslo accords with political trickery, and suggests that the only way to deal with the Palestinians is to “beat them up, not once but repeatedly, beat them up so it hurts so badly, until it’s unbearable” (all translations are mine).

According to Haaretz’s Gideon Levy, the video should be “Banned for viewing by children so as not to corrupt them, and distributed around the country and the world so that everyone will know who leads the government of Israel.”

The idea that the Prime Minister of Israel wants peace always has been bollocks. His continuous refusal to curb the settlements already pointed to that fact. This just reinforces it.

Hopefully 9 years of bloodshed will have changed his tune?

This would be a bit more of a revelation if it wasn’t 9 years old, though. A lot changes in 9 years.

“Bizarre this hasn’t made more of a splash.” Do you honestly think so?

“…beat [the Palestinians up, not once but repeatedly, beat them up so it hurts so badly, until it’s unbearable…”

Vile. Worth noting that Tablet‘s stacked with hawkish Zionists (Goldberg, Wieseltier et al). Bullshitting would not be in their interest.

A newly revealed tape? Odd, I’ve read that quote from him years ago…anyway, I’m sure the standard line will be to say that was nearly ten years ago and his views have softened/changed since?

This is not only what he thinks, but what most of the Israeli government and population think.

    6. joe90 — on 19th July, 2010 at 1:08 pm

We all know the brutality that is inflicted on the palestinian population so that’s not a new revelation.

It will be interesting to see what the political elite in america will make of being called idiots and easily manipulated by their boy in tel aviv. The whitehouse spin doctors are going to be earning their money on this one.

As for peace process bye bye doomed before it even began the dude said he did everything to derail it.

      “john”

such opinions could only be considered total fecking ignorance.

random guy: that’s not what the surveys say. look up the peace index.

i wish i could have felt more surprised by bibi’s two-facedness, but i’m not.

this has made plenty of a splash where people are interested in looking at what’s really going, as opposed to what people would like to believe is going on.

Sunny completely suppresses the context in which Bibi’s comments were made.

At that time the Palestinians had treachorously reneged on the agreement to negotiate a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The Palestinians had rejected the generous Barak/Beilin proposals, and refused to make any counterproposals. And the Palestinians had embarked on a campaign of bombings and killings directed at Israeli civilians, especially women and children, which were eventually to take many hundreds of lives and cause thousands to be wounded and maimed.

    11. joe90 — on 20th July, 2010 at 1:07 pm

post 10 = epic fail, playing the victim card does’nt work we could easily mention the palestinian victims which outnumber israeli victims 10 to 1. Netanyahu was caught saying what most political observers already knew he was doing.

    12. Naadir Jeewa — on 20th July, 2010 at 1:21 pm

@10 - Here comes the Hasbarah line. Though I expected something of what Leon predicted (and as Eli Lake, David Frum and others have done in order to defend Bibi against the Beinart essay), rather than resorts to the schoolboy “they started it” maneuvre.

Bananabrain @8 and boyo @9 get it right.

      Peace
