  • New theme….

    by Sunny
    1st July, 2010 at 2:24 am

Well, the old PP look has definitely gone. I can’t seem to retrieve it from any of the back-ups. And the ‘retro’ theme was a bit too complicated to modify as I wanted. So how about this one? Or do you not care? I’m still in experimental mode…

On blogging generally, I’m still recovering from the Libcon conference - which took a hell of a lot of time and, while being very successful, left me with a big backlog of work. So I’ll be a bit sporadic for the next few days at least.

      Blog post:: New theme…. http://bit.ly/c2ulI7

The bar where you can see who has commented most recently and on what article seems to have gone. I thought that was a good feature. And the edit facility also seemed to have gone when I commented on the ‘retro’ version. I thought the old look was fine.

Old wine, new bottle. Same crap, no difference.

    3. cjcjc — on 1st July, 2010 at 8:10 am

      It’s very sleek and modern.
      Nice.

Would be good to have “latest comments” and edit facility.

think a blog about desis should have some colour.

    5. Andrew — on 1st July, 2010 at 8:58 am

I like the style. Not so keen on the ‘colour’ scheme - or lack of it!

    6. Golam Murtaza — on 1st July, 2010 at 9:00 am

I quite like it. I prefer something simple and uncluttered and this seems to do the job.

    7. douglas clark — on 1st July, 2010 at 10:19 am

Well, Mr Hundal, this is a lot better. :-)

The latest comments facility is a loss though.

    8. Nadia — on 1st July, 2010 at 10:22 am

Quite like it…bit formal-looking though, int it? As a fellow midnight oil burner, fiver says you’ll change it once you wake up and look at it again.

And as for the appropriately-numbered 2 - seriously, you have nothing better to do? If you don’t like it, don’t read it. Fairly simple concept. Still, if pathetic little comments like that make you feel good about yourself…well, I guess it’s cheaper thantherapy.

    9. Nadia — on 1st July, 2010 at 10:23 am

      * than therapy. Looks like the edit function is required after all!

    10. Ravi Naik — on 1st July, 2010 at 10:24 am

I like this one better than the sepia…er retro theme. The white background provides a better contrast than a brown background, and therefore it reads better.

I agree with Sarah that there are two key features missing:

      1) The “who wrote what where” section with the latest comments on the top right hand-side.
      2) The edit function with a 5 min tolerance.

I might even like this theme better than the old one. Looks very neat.

    11. shu — on 1st July, 2010 at 11:09 am

      looks tacky

    12. shu — on 1st July, 2010 at 11:14 am

where did the old theme go anyway? was it not compatible with the new version of WP?

    13. LibertyPhile — on 1st July, 2010 at 11:31 am

Overall structure is better but line readability of main posts is poor, the line is too long.

      Could be improved by:

More left margin / right margin
      Bigger font
      Bigger interline spacing

Comments are easier to read, though font size too small for my liking.

    14. LibertyPhile — on 1st July, 2010 at 11:35 am

OK, I’ve just spotted the font size adjustment (hidden away in the top right corner). Solves the problem but I think a lot of people may miss it.

    15. dave bones — on 1st July, 2010 at 12:00 pm

the one I looked at last night was best. Less formally political and more cultural. still this is good. happy blogging.

    16. Jai — on 1st July, 2010 at 12:10 pm

Not bad. Not bad at all. It’s definitely growing on me. Very sleek, cool, minimalistic, modern….Very “Mad Men”, in fact ;)

And yes, obviously the comments sidebar and the comment editing facility would need to be added.

think a blog about desis should have some colour.

We could always have a “flock wallpaper” background for the header at the top of the screen :) I’m only half-joking — nothing too garish, but a design along those lines in either very dark red or the current very dark grey/black could work…..

That’s assuming that Sunny wants to add a subtle “Asian twist” to the blog’s appearance. If not, then the current new version is fine by me. Adds a very professional tone to the proceedings, which could be an appropriate choice, given the serious subject matter frequently discussed.

    17. Sunny — on 1st July, 2010 at 1:48 pm

I miss the latest comments thing too!

Don’t worry I plan to make adjustments to this theme - I barely installed it last night!

    18. boyo — on 1st July, 2010 at 3:25 pm

ooh, maybe mine isn’t working but this seems like a real step backwards, like the Lib Cons in fact!

    19. persephone — on 1st July, 2010 at 6:32 pm

definitely bring back the latest edits . I also like it that the adverts have gone.

    20. sarah — on 1st July, 2010 at 6:41 pm

It’s a bit plain… could we decorate it with a jar of pickles by any chance? And maybe Big Ben to represent politics?

    21. sonia — on 2nd July, 2010 at 2:44 am

I Like it ! though i will miss the old Pickled Politics look..

    22. boyo — on 2nd July, 2010 at 7:16 am

“a jar of pickles” ? “a big ben”? Goodness, Sarah, you’re not one of my clients are you?

    23. Don — on 2nd July, 2010 at 11:31 am

Seems fine, but I agree that the recent comments function would be welcome back.

    24. Kulvinder — on 2nd July, 2010 at 12:30 pm

In other news the fucking times website requires direct debit payments!!! for a newspaper!!! what planet are they living on? I’d accept handing over some paypal money or even more usefully a system where i texted a particular number at £2/text and was given an access code in return; but going through the bother of setting up a direct debit.

      ERM NO.

    25. Kulvinder — on 2nd July, 2010 at 12:31 pm

nb sunny id prefer a higher contrast colour scheme, particularly for the comments but im sure we’ll adjust regardless.

    26. KJB — on 2nd July, 2010 at 7:53 pm

      Coo, I rather like this.

    27. earwicga — on 5th July, 2010 at 2:07 am

Is it just me that is having problems focusing on reading on a grey background? And the resizer that Liberty found has now gone.

    28. Sarah AB — on 5th July, 2010 at 6:39 am

I agree with earwicga about the grey background.

    29. Jai — on 5th July, 2010 at 10:13 am

Hmmm. Readable but a little dull. My suggestion would be to bring back the aforementioned supersleek “Mad Men” look (ideally with a larger default font size) or try something else completely.

Also, can we please have the numbered comments back too.

    30. Leon — on 6th July, 2010 at 2:32 pm

I really like the new look! The old one was looking waaay to old hat…one thing though it needs something to fill the top right corner. Looking a bit empty up there, maybe bring back the video box?

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
