Let’s try this again…

For some reason the server has been using up a lot of memory – affecting PP heavily all last week. Hence the constant outages. I don’t know if this is sorted yet, but I’m still working on it. Unfortunately, I also deleted the blog theme that I created and can’t find a back-up. So, for the time being, we have the old one.

Either I’ll try and find the theme or create a new one. Maybe PP does need a fresh look. Are you still having problems accessing?

Yes, appear to be working again…

  2. DavidMWW — on 28th June, 2010 at 7:05 am

You probably need to install wp-supercache.

  3. Don — on 28th June, 2010 at 8:19 am

    Seems to be working now.

  4. Naadir Jeewa — on 28th June, 2010 at 10:48 am

I ran into similar issues with BorisWatch recently – though I haven’t upgraded to WordPress 3.0 just yet. W3 Total Cache did the trick for my WordPress installs.
    That and the following changes:
    1. Ditching Apache for lighttpd (could also use NGINX).
    2. Using php-fpm as a CGI handler.
    3. Enabling the Alternative PHP Cache.

    We’re now super speedy.

Maybe PP does need a fresh look.

Keep it simple. You can start by getting rid of twitter “reactions” and all other twitter nonsense – it really doesn’t add anything to your blog, and just clutters the screen.

  6. Katy Newton — on 28th June, 2010 at 11:45 am

I agree with Ravi – simple is definitely better.

  7. Vikrant — on 28th June, 2010 at 1:29 pm

Yes the twitter bs is just distracting from the main discussion!

  8. Sunny — on 28th June, 2010 at 1:55 pm

YEah but Twitter reactions are a way for people to comment on blog posts here too. I quite like them.

David – I did actually install that but it made no difference. I have a feeling server configurations was to blame, because this time around I wiped everything from the disk and re-installed from scratch.

Naadir – are you running BW from your own server? Mine is hosted, so I doubt I can switch to lighthttpd…

    You could try yolasite.com
Iis been used for the new site “Spittoon watch”

Works fine now – I wouldn’t worry about the look – and I’m neutral about the twitter stuff.

  11. Naadir Jeewa — on 28th June, 2010 at 5:14 pm

Sunny – Yeah, I used to be with MediaTemple “cloud-based hosting”, but migrated to a Docklands-based VPS.

You should be able to install W3 Total Cache on Dreamhost with “disk-based caching” for a large performance boost though.

“Spittoon Watch”. Hold on, I’ve just heard the sound of one hand clapping!

I guess everyone needs a hobby.

me – why watch a blog no one reads?

  16. Vikrant — on 29th June, 2010 at 3:28 am

Sunny! This is PP not Sepia Mutiny :) !

  17. bananabrain — on 29th June, 2010 at 9:50 am

oh, i’m pretty sure people read the spittoon, but i’m not especially interested in blogwars, now there’s something nobody’s much interested in reading about. you know me, i like to keep it civil. i am much amused that someone’s set up a “spittoonwatch” – shows that we’re annoying the right people; generic islamist trolls and (not to mention) useful-idiot academics at strathclyde university who can’t tell the difference between my views and those of, say, mel phillips.

Not interested in blog wars?? haha! That boat sailed a long time ago BB. Now you gots to eat the cake you made.

As for pissing people off, given that 90% of the content involves smearing someone or another, I’m sure you do piss off people. It’s entirely another matter whether anyone gives a fuck.

  19. Sunny — on 29th June, 2010 at 12:25 pm

Vikrant – I quite like this theme! heh!

  20. bananabrain — on 29th June, 2010 at 1:07 pm

    sunny,

i don’t know what you mean by that. as you know, i don’t speak for everyone at the spittoon, our opinions often diverge, but aside from the odd disappointed remark about the increasing inappropriateness and absurdity of the term “progressive” – which i know has been noted by more than just myself – i am sure we can disagree politely. at any rate, i’m sure i can and it’s a position i have argued strongly for in spittoon mods discussions.

90% of the content involves smearing someone or another

really? giving sources for stuff is smearing, by you? this sounds like one of those famous political irregular verbs: i expose,
you smear, he rants, etc. i don’t think you’ve ever defined what you mean by the term, which unfortunately appears to get stuck on “criticism which doesn’t fit your worldview”. i would have thought that attacking clerical fascism would be right up your street, or perhaps your admiration of ken livingstone has overtaken you. by the sound of it, you don’t seem to be that aware of our contents.

Why watch a site that no-one reads?

    Catfight.

That site just doubled its traffic in the last month or so and has momentum.

Also, that site clearly has some communalists rattled and thus gets a stalker website.

spittoon.org certainly has more solid content than this crap site, but who cares no one reads it (in bitchy web talk).

  22. bananabrain — on 29th June, 2010 at 3:50 pm

    kisan,

like i said, i’m not into blogwars, nice though your support for the spittoon is welcome and of course it’s nice to get people coming over to comment both from pickled politics, harry’s place, butterflies and wheels and others. i started commenting here in 2005 i think and interactions here have given me much enjoyment (as well as a certain amount of frustration).

anyway, it seems a shame to let it degenerate into name-calling and counter-accusations.

by the sound of it, you don’t seem to be that aware of our contents.

Of course, I refer to the time before I stopped reading that garbage.

Kisan / Faisal – jeez, you’ve become so pathetic it’s just funny now.

  24. kisan — on 30th June, 2010 at 2:15 am

Just for the record, I’m not Faisal and Faisal isn’t me as Sunny seems to be suggesting.

  25. kisan — on 30th June, 2010 at 3:06 am

Sunny, if you can’t tell the difference between commentators and want to start suggesting different people are one and the same that in itself is which?

    1)pathetic
    2)funny
3)a bit of both of the above

  26. ¬AF — on 30th June, 2010 at 4:04 am

“To expose” is, of course, a grammatically regular verb, BB. That pedantry aside, your points are good ones.

Sunny, does it not make you even a teensy weensy bit uneasy that too often of late you appear to be in the business of at least excusing or otherwise specially pleading for religious bigots, clerical fascists and assorted cheerleaders of violence and terror?

  27. bananabrain — on 30th June, 2010 at 8:45 am

    ¬AF,

i meant, of course, to allude to the famous political irregular verb:

    i give confidential briefings
    you leak
he has been prosecuted under the official secrets act

“That site (Spittoon) just doubled its traffic in the last month or so and has momentum.”

Yep in April it had 2 viewers, in May 4 and this month 8 (including commentators). The other blogs are petrified.

I don’t take lessons on what is right or wrong from people who constantly smear others, have little knowledge of what is going on, spend little time trying to understand the context of what people are saying, have a specific agenda, ally themselves with authoritarians who excuse torture and black-ops, and also people who excuse state-sponsored terrorism. Does it not bother you that you guys are pretty much full-throated apologists for that? Probably not.

  30. ¬AF — on 30th June, 2010 at 5:37 pm

Is anyone asking you to take lessons, Sunny?

    And who are “you guys”?

I think you need to lie down for a while.

  31. Sunny — on 30th June, 2010 at 9:15 pm

Thanks for the advice preacher man.

  32. sarah — on 30th June, 2010 at 9:34 pm

Sunny- I love the redesign! You say it’s old but I wasn’t reading PP back then because I’ve never seen it. But- it looks good now!

  33. dave bones — on 1st July, 2010 at 12:41 am

Wow not been around a while this blog looks 100 times better man. Excellent. Is simpler too and the dates up the side is great. How is the motorbiking going Sunny? Did you take a test? After over a year looking at ebay and drooling I could resist the urge no longer and bought this motherfuker (not the dog) half way through the England game! Good time to bid on ebay no?

Everyone in the street is laughing at me and my midlife crisis machine. I haven’t picked it up yet and it needs MOT and Tax. I am scared shitless. No indicators, no back suspension, I don’t think I am going to ride it very much. I am just going to park it outside the front of my house and look at it. Take people up and down the street for 10p a go. Its got no back seat either so they wll need a cushion.
