I cannot quite believe Liddle really thinks this is “fascism”. He may be surprised – its a blow to his inflated ego – he may be angry, but intellectually he must know that calling this fascism is simply wrong. I suspect he’s got so carried away by his own brand of hyperbole and condemnation that he can’t see the wood from the trees.

As for the metropolitan elites. Well, Liddle has worked for the BBC, and works for the Times and Spectator, and is a regular TV talking head – all establishment activities in their own way. If he wants to portray himself as some sort of radical dissident, he can, and then we can all have a chuckle.

Not really the daily mail is making a loss as is the times; infact all newspapers are doing badly, but with the guardian, indy etc not doing quite as badly (in % terms).

Still the MSM business model is shot across the spectrum* and claiming that only the observer, guardian and indy are in trouble is completely wrong.

Anyway contrasting his oeuvre with yours, there’s no contest: he, richly rewarded by influential newspapers mags and broadcasters. You, ‘obsessing’ on a blog, the occasional CiF and ‘a special friend of the programme’ on the odd phone in.

In case it escaped your attention the Independent is the most unpopular newspaper in the country, most of us don’t like what it has to say it doesn’t speak our language that’s why it’s going out of business followed in short order by the Observer and the Guardian – spot the pattern?

The conceit of NL is to believe that they catalysed a soft left liberal society where the citizenry are more at ease with themselves – not true of course. Most of us have always been conservative and intolerant of ‘anything goes’ there’s really nothing about the Left that we like this is reflected in the newspapers that we read and don’t read.

But I’d quite like to be elite, if that’s an option.

That is a fundamental misunderstanding surely? The anti Liddle campaign IS free expression in action. If Liddle (and Moir) want to live by free expression, they can hardly complain when they are on the receiving end.

The internet may have allowed it to become more visible and vitriolic sure. But the fact that Rod Liddle, like the Gogarty family, are journalists does not somehow exempt them from the criticism that is intrinsic in free expression. Twenty years ago, this would have provoked a handful of letters – no longer is that true in the internet age.

There is no metropolitan elite identity in the anti-Liddle stuff, it is just a lot of people expressing their views.

And given that Sunny probably doubles the Indy’s circulation when he buys it, the owners can hardly ignore the protests.

It makes me soo mad. They are just as bad in the US.

Why when we fight back-we fight back with rational-we’re insane fascists but when they do-with irrational rubbish-they are men/women of the people? The layman. Salt of the blimming earth.

How did the Right do this? How have they been able to twist so many concepts and ideas to turn it around that it’s soo bad to inherently care for people?

I see both bad in right and left wing politics (blame party politics) but I am astounded by how it is soo wrong to want fairness and equality.

Mind bogles.

As to the media more generally and the ‘elite’ narrative, I think that the best response was the Max Gogarty/Guardian debacle. Give the public more credit Sunny, they know how dire the media is.
