Call for ‘race slur’ Pendle Conservative councillor to resign
It is alleged that Coun Benson responded by saying: “The problem with Colne is that there are too many takeaways. And too many Pakis, that’s why people don’t come to Colne.” Cllr Iqbal described the Conservative councillor’s words as ‘deplorable and disgusting.’ He said: “It is an example of the Tory party showing its true colours.”

    Obama’s Discontents
The striking thing to me, though, is how fast the left has turned on him. Conservatives gave Bush five or six years before they really turned on him, and even then they revolted more against the Republican establishment than against Bush himself. But the left? It took about ten months. And the depth of the revolt against Obama has been striking too.

As near as I can tell, there’s a small but significant minority who are so enraged that they’d be perfectly happy to see his presidency destroyed as a kind of warning to future Democrats. It’s extraordinarily self-destructive behavior — and typically liberal, unfortunately. Just ask LBJ, Jimmy Carter, and Bill Clinton. And then ask them whether liberal revolt, in the end, strengthened liberalism or conservatism.

Geoff Hoon to give evidence to Iraq inquiry
Former defence chief Lord Boyce has already told the inquiry he was prevented by Mr Hoon from talking to the chief of defence logistics “because of the concern of it becoming public knowledge that we were planning for a military contribution” in Iraq.

Japan Airlines to file for bankruptcy protection
Japan’s government says flights will continue as normal as JAL begins restructuring under the supervision of a state-backed turnaround organisation.

Regarding Cllr Benson I would be extremely wary of having a Cllr who has not grasped the basic difference between off-the-cuff remarks in private and in public. Much as I personally deplore the statement (I won’t use the alleged as Cllr Benson has both acknowledged making the remark and tendered his apologies) I don’t think that calling for a resignation, or sacking, on the basis of the statement alone is warranted.

It may well indicate looking into Cllr Benson’s track record ensuring that he has stood for all the residents he represents regardless of perceived ethnicity.

However anything more at this stage is only adding further disparity to cohesion and fuel to the fire of the far right.

golly, surely everyone knows that people only stay in this cold country because of the diversity of food. probably the problem with this colne place (wherever that is :-) ) is that there isn’t enough diversity…

He said: “It is an example of the Tory party showing its true colours.”

I do not intend to vote for the Tories, but I am really fed up with this sort of politics: it’s cheap and serves no one, specially minorities.

The striking thing to me, though, is how fast the left has turned on him. Conservatives gave Bush five or six years before they really turned on him,

I do not think there is evidence that the vast majority of liberals and progressives have abandoned Obama: he still is pretty popular. Yes, you can see disappointment in DailyKos and other blogs, but there is a difference between disagreeing with some of his positions, and abandoning him (as in Bush 2006). What is happening in Massachusetts is a case of people getting tired of the Democratic Party which has controlled the state for several decades, and has become complacent and produced a mediocre candidate.

From the point of view of Healthcare reform and the prospect of Democrats losing the “super-majority” tomorrow, it is actually a good thing for Obama - he will have enough justification to speed things up: he will just need the House to sign the Senate bill version, and it goes directly to the President to sign it without having to go to the Senate again. Obama will want to do this before the 27th of Jan, the day he addresses the State of the Union.

Sunny, what about the Cadbury takeover? No mention of that?

Efforts must be made immediately to steer as many Kurds, Kosovo Albanians, Somalis and Afghans to Colne as possible. A few Nigerians and Iraqi asylum-seekers, too.

Councillor Benson will soon realise that he was lucky enough when Colne had only Pakistanis.

Yeah, because the thing about East Lancashire is it would be heaven on earth if it were only whites living there.

      Not.

Just ask LBJ, Jimmy Carter, and Bill Clinton. And then ask them whether liberal revolt, in the end, strengthened liberalism or conservatism.

Or perhaps reflect how the politics of lesser evilism and meekly accepting whatever regressive measures are pushed by Democrat politicians has resulted in a situation where the most left-wing American President of the last 40 years was Richard Nixon.
