    On the Today programme

by Sunny on 15th August, 2006 at 12:02 am

I’ll be interviewed for a short piece on Radio 4’s Today programme this morning so have a listen if you get up that early. I expect it’ll be something around the media consumption of British Asians.
Update: Just told they’ve pencilled it for tomorrow around 7:30am.

What time are you being interviewed?

    2. Sunny — on 15th August, 2006 at 12:10 am

Pre-recorded, thankfully, so I have no idea what time it’ll be on. In fact if something big happens tomorrow they probably won’t run it. But it should be after 7am I’m told.

    3. Old Pickler — on 15th August, 2006 at 12:16 am

Hey, brains as well as looks.

      Shame about the lefty politics:-)

    4. Amir — on 15th August, 2006 at 12:33 am

People are always nattering on about how ‘Zionists control the media’.

This, in my opinion, is a flight from fact.

      … [deep breath, Eric Cartman voice] it’s controlled by those skin-obsessed, Guardian-reading, Muesli-eating, badger-loving Asians! ;-)

The thing is: I hate badgers. I effing hate em’. (And yes: the feeling is mutual. Badgers hate me, too)

    5. Old Pickler — on 15th August, 2006 at 12:37 am

Badgers love me. But badgers can’t be choosers.

    6. Amir — on 15th August, 2006 at 1:07 am

      Old Pickler,

The idea of a woman having sex with a badger is highly amusing (if not slightly disturbing). Thank you for the image! ;-)

…ya know, I’m sure there’s a Web Site on the Net with that kind of…

      Oh, forget it!

    7. Don — on 15th August, 2006 at 1:15 am

Badgers, gotta respect ‘em. They can really mess up your bumper.

    8. Amir — on 15th August, 2006 at 1:21 am

They can really mess up your face as well. Little blighters.

They’re like mini-George Galloways. But with sharp teeth and credibility.

    9. mirax — on 15th August, 2006 at 6:50 am

Another George, sweeping NY streets and getting nuttin but grief from the media.

ps we do the same thing to litterbugs in S’pore.

      Well done Sunny!

    11. Old Pickler — on 15th August, 2006 at 9:58 am

There’s a place called Badgers Mount. I think it’s somewhere near Pratts Bottom.

    12. Vikrant — on 15th August, 2006 at 10:21 am

    14. Don — on 15th August, 2006 at 12:07 pm

      Which segment was it, Sunny?

    15. Kismet Hardy — on 15th August, 2006 at 12:18 pm

Badger of honour for you sunny

    16. Don — on 15th August, 2006 at 12:31 pm

    17. Vladimir — on 15th August, 2006 at 12:33 pm

So what time was it aired out, jus took a quick look, you could be prezsenting the show, with the number of similar topics it had on!

    18. Kulvinder — on 15th August, 2006 at 12:35 pm

A better link for those who didn’t get don :)

    19. TheFriendlyInfidel — on 15th August, 2006 at 12:46 pm

I cannot find you on the listen again page, where you pulled or do you feature in one of the other sections?

    20. sonia — on 15th August, 2006 at 1:35 pm

WHO said the Zionists control the media?

Ha ha - its very easy to see who controls the media since the whole thing boils down to a few conglomerates who own practically everything. But of course thank goodness for the Internet..( so far anyway..)

“media consumption of british asians” what a strange topic methinks the media keeps treating ‘british asians’ as monkeys in a zoo or an attraction on some similar level —ooh we can’t understand ‘them’ ..

    21. TheFriendlyInfidel — on 15th August, 2006 at 3:05 pm

or is it: “ooh they can’t understand ‘us’”

      Mutual incomprehension, mutual misunderstanding.

      That’s where it is at.

    22. AsifB — on 15th August, 2006 at 5:04 pm

“media consumption of british asians” - well that would explain Eamon Holmes looking a bit lardy.

I’m not sure I can pry myself away from 5live, but will try.

I assume a lot of media surveys are based on incorrect assumptions - i’ve seen a few where ZEE tv is the only Asian language station listed - I alwasy like to rectify that (not forgetting to add Paramount Comedy Channel and UK Conquest..)

Similar issue - Interesting piece on AIM today about Sunrise moving Asian language programming to sister station - if I recall correctly, its founder originally started with a IBA community licence that included African Caribean programming that got ‘let go’ as well.

    23. Vladimir — on 16th August, 2006 at 10:17 am

This is not a new issue it was highlighted in the message on Radio 4 about a year and a bit back, I would really like it if such Asian Channels were forced to have some British Asian content by Ofcom, the odd documentary or a news buletin, I wouldn’t even mind it if the odd ‘drama’ was based in britain too.

I really do not like the way that people do not know what is going on in the world about them, but do know what is going on in the half dozen dramas they watch(long live Ramsay street). If anything such TV perpetuates segregation too.

    24. Frank Fisher — on 16th August, 2006 at 10:28 am

I was half asleep - you seemed to be talking about asians eating yoghurt in front of the telly? Is that raita? I mean, is that right?

    25. Kulvinder — on 16th August, 2006 at 11:22 am

yogana do what in the morning? :p

didn’t really understand the point of the piece, people watch what they want to watch, the concept of a mainstream british media in a digitised world is bollocks.

    26. sonia — on 16th August, 2006 at 11:30 am

21- TFI :-) sums up the case.
