Daily Mail readers praise Shariah law
Hilarious little tid-bit in the Indy blog.
This morning the paper posted a story about a paedophile who is to be beheaded and then crucified in Saudi Arabia under the country’s Sharia law (not normally a Mail favourite).
So far the story has attracted nearly 300 comments. To gauge the tone of the debate we decided to look at the top rated comments and then the worst rated.

A good punishment for a sick peado. Why can”t we hand out this very appropriate sentence to UK offenders? Put it this way, he won’t re-offend, or cost the taxpayer anything in the future.
- MARTIN CANE, CLITHEROE, 4/11/2009 8:47well that is certainly a punishment that fits the crime, pity we can’t have a few in our courts.
- Jane, UK, 3/11/2009 20:02fair punishment for a terrible crime against children … should be the other way round crcify him, castrate him too for good measure and then behead him just before he dies.
- Nick, Chatham Kent, 4/11/2009 8:47Let’s see what the do gooders say about this decision.
- KDINSYDNEY, Sydney, Australia, 3/11/2009 19:59
And those were the top-rated comments. All the ones saying ‘OMG that’s a sick punishment’ were rated the worst. Heh. But then one can’t really rate the Daily Mail or its readers for consistency or sense.

You shouldn’t be at all surprised. Most DM readers, like most Brits, would like to see harsher punishments for bad boys.
http://ukcommentators.blogspot.com/2004/08/horror-horror.html
It’s true that prison – that punishment – alone is not enough. What is necessary is the cultural drive to condemn crime and criminals the way we can condemn smokers and racists. The two things – attitudes to criminals and their punishment – react on and reinforce (or weaken) each other.
Take Saudi Arabia, where murder is punished by beheading and robbery by amputation. Were we to introduce such punishments to the UK, crime would fall, but not to anywhere near Saudi levels. The existence of such draconian punishment is a reflection of a culture that has no time for thieves and murderers. It’s the culture that makes the crime rate low – the punishment reflects and reinforces the culture.
You’d be surprised (or maybe not) at the support for Saudi justice. Nick Griffin in the Spectator, March 2004 :
http://ukcommentators.blogspot.com/2004/04/islamofascism-bnp-leader-nick-griffin.html
“I’m not necessarily saying that our ways are superior to those of Islam. In many ways they do things better than us, in my opinion. For example, they’ll cut the hands off five or six thieves a year, and as a result virtually none of their elderly folk are burgled in their own home by some scumbag who pushes them over and they die from shock a year later. So we’re squeamish about five scumbags having their hands cut off, and we’re not at all squeamish about hundreds of our pensioners dying in misery as a result of a few scumbags running around. Islam can teach us a lot.”
Really is adds to the whole Daily Mail-Sharia relationship
If Pavlov had had access to the Mail he wouldn’t have needed to bother dogs.
So we all agree that Sharia law hud punishments are unequivocally totally sick, barbaric, inhumane and totally backward.
I was really surprised about the professor Nutt’s comments. Everything supporting him was 300+ everything against was 350-. Were stoners bombarding the message board or is there a shift in attitudes in the country?
“Let’s see what the do gooders say about this decision.”
Um… I don’t agree with it?
i know this is your favourite trope of islamic legal culture, but call it hudd for a particular time and place. Its not something to be enjoyed or relished in at all.
So why is it still around?
So we all agree that Sharia law hud punishments are unequivocally totally sick, barbaric, inhumane and totally backward.
Of course. But I thought you sang from the Daily Mail hymnsheet?
Typical bigot.
Condemning the Vast Majority of Moderate Mail Readers based upon the ignorant comments of a few idiots.
^^^ Umm actually they were the top rated comments, the ratings were given by Mail readers, hence the views actually represent the majority of DailyMail readers.
Reza,
I’d have thought any of these comments should get you Care in the Community. Perhaps it’s a jolly wheeze by Daily Mail Readers to get their fair share of welfare benefits, which, as we all know, includes a gentlemans estate in Surrey, a Rolls Royce, probably a yacht and oodles of dosh.
You do realise one of these nutters could be living right next door to you?
Talking of laws and people who ignore them:

I REALLY want to begin a new career as a LGBT Outreach Roma-Gypsy-Traveller-Tinker Coordinator.
Douglas
Yes, it is worrying. But clearly the people approving of the comments did so out of hatred for paedophile murderers rather than out of support for sharia law.
Mob mentality is never attractive. I remember reading about a paediatrician who was beaten up in a northern town during the paedophile pogroms stoked up by the Sun a few years ago.
As someone who opposes the death penalty I can’t pretend I don’t find the comments depressing.
However, I still maintain that it is hypocritical to use this example to denigrate all Mail readers whilst at the same time ignoring or denying the vile attitudes that are regularly shown to exist among a very high proportion of the Vast Majority of Moderate Muslims.
Ask yourself Douglas, what would the comments page look like on a British Muslim newspaper covering this story?
And try to see the hypocrisy and double standards being applied here.
Reza,
Point. Although your views and mine differ on the standards of Daily Mail readers.
The MPACUK thread about this subject is just about as bad:

Are we agreeing again? What is the world coming to!
And I’m not sure we disagree that much on our views of Mail readers.
The only difference is that I won’t treat the views of those people with contempt as many lefties do.
And I believe that they are relevant to because they represent a large section of the population.
Most Sun, Express, Mail and Telegraph readers oppose mass immigration and multiculturalism. I’ve posted evidence here that in fact, a majority of British people oppose those issues.
The attitude of the left is to dismiss those people as ‘bigots’ and ignore them. And continue forcing mass immigration and unrestrained multiculturalism on an unwilling public. Then introduce evermore draconian ‘race; laws to stymie people’s opposition.
That’s dangerous. The views don’t simply go away. And the more the will of the people is ignored, the more likely people are to move to extreme parties like the BNP who will listen to them.
At the end of the day, it is irrelevant whether any of us like or dislike mass immigration and multiculturalism. The majority of British people don’t. And we ignore them at our peril.
Reza,
I’d have thought it was pretty obvious that I don’t like extremism no matter where it comes from. One of the problems that Pickled Politics recognised in it’s early days was the dangers of extremists highjacking the public discourse.
It was particularily good on the opportunists that claimed to speak for the Muslim community when they really did nothing of the sort. It is still an issue, but when you have organisations like BMSD arising they are no longer getting quite such a free run.
The danger here is to align with exactly the same personality types that saw an opportunity to represent ‘Muslims’ but who now parasite off exclusive nationalist sentiments.
You possibly don’t appreciate just how stomach churning some white nationalists actually can be. I’d ask you to have a look at this article by Edmund Standing:
http://tinyurl.com/yf3orug
The first poster / flier there has a swastika on a supposed celebration of Remembrance Day! That is just as deliberately edgy, fucking stupid – you chose – as the Sharia 4 UK shtick, in my opinion.
The degregation of polite debate is not anything I ever thought I would get exercised about. But the rolling 24 hour news cycle combined with a desperate need to fuel controversy in order to attract advertising or justify a license fee seems to be fuelling a completely debased debate.
To what extent do you think both ’sides’ are being manipulated?
It seems that whilst people in public media can rarely say anything completely inflammatory anymore – to the extent of calling for race wars or whatever – they are winding up people that have no such inhibitions. Viz -a – viz the comment columns listed above.
Most of the people that you are trying to convince probably would listen to you a bit more if you just prefaced what you had to say with a statement that you were a liberal secularist or some such.
Gotta go.
douglas
“One of the problems that Pickled Politics recognised in it’s early days was the dangers of extremists highjacking the public discourse.”
What do you mean by extremism?
If you feel it means taking a viewpoint that is outside of the moral consensus then I would claim that people like Sunny are extremists.
Support for uncontrolled mass immigration, the moral equivalence of foreign cultures and unrestrained multiculturalism is not and has never been supported by the majority. Yet the left have conspired to ensure we have it in spades.
In his interview with the EDP spokesman, he made it clear that he supports legalising all illegal immigrants here today. That’s an extremist point of view. Isn’t it?
Reza,
You have got to be joking. Did you even bother to read what I said?
I mean people that – on both sides of the debate – try to drive a wedge between people that wouldn’t otherwise think it was a debate worth having. Rabble-rousers if you like. There are good examples of these sort of folk upthread.
But, anyway, I’m wasting your time and mine here. As far as you are concerned you occupy the position of the reasonable Daily Mail reader and I am an apologist for extremism.
I on the other hand, see a lot of people being orchestrated by a fairly rotten media, ’street’ and ‘community first’ activists and supine politicians, on both sides of the divide.
There is an old joke:
If capital and labour ever get together, God help the rest of us.
It seems pertinent here, too.
This involves children. It will be a highly emotive issue, no question. Would “The mirror” readers vote anything different if they for once, consider their children could be victims? I think not.
The worst cases that made politicians -all flavours- “go soft” was the fact that too many who were killed by the state turned out to be innocent. Now we are owned by the EU there is no choice. Incidently, the final incarnation. The “Lisbon Treaty” has removed paedophilia laws, most likely to placate Muslims.
The earlier post that stated mobs gathered outside a paediatricians to lynch the individual as a paedophile, I remember was in Plymouth.
Doug.
That “Swastika” is no more so than the “Legs of Mann”. Let these sort who dream on the outskirts of society dream on. Ace graphics!
Andy
“The “Lisbon Treaty” has removed paedophilia laws, most likely to placate Muslims.”
I think that the allegation is based upon this:-
“Page 412 Article 21 of the Charter of the Lisbon Treaty is identical to Article 2-81 in the EU Treaty of 2004 and states, “Any discrimination on the basis of… sexual orientation or any other factor is prohibited”.
In all previous treaties, such as the Nice Treaty, there is a protocol which excludes paedophilia from the prohibition of discrimination (NJS 16 AUG).”
I find it hard to believe that is a conspiracy or has anything to do with Islam, despite having very little respect for that ideology.
Do you have any evidence from a reputable source that it is?
Andy,
I am not referring to the linking word in the Blood & Honour headline. They are clearly using a funny symbol instead of an ampersand, and I wouldn’t even have commented on it. I am talking about in the main image. Directly above the guys head, and partly obscured by the word ‘London’ is a flag, which from a wasted childhood certainly looks to me like a swastika.
Edited to add – reading War Comics, nothing more sinister!
