Boris Johnson appoints crony to ‘independent’ board

The London Evening Standard reports:

The Mayor announced his policy adviser Anthony Browne has been made one of 13 board members of the LDA. The board, which spends £700million a year on business and community projects, is intended to be independent, but has only one Liberal Democrat and no Labour Party members.

Labour’s deputy leader on the London Assembly, John Biggs, said: “Given that Boris’s cries of cronyism helped him beat Ken last May it looks pretty hypocritical that he’s now filling the board room with his own advisers and chums.

The appointment of his right -hand man shows he has lost trust in the members he appointed only last year and the appointment of yet another Tory in a board without a single Labour representative shows a profound lack of confidence in his ideas and a retreat from his commitment to transparency.

Yes, the very same Anthony Browne who apologised for writing “provocative” articles for the Spectator and the Daily Mail etc. Browne is among the biggest right-wing nutjobs going. He wrote vitriolic and sometimes downright racist articles in the right-wing press in the past, suggesting variously that lefties were to blame for everything, and that Africans were to blame for the rise in diseases.

Anyway, Boris does exactly what he accused the previous adminstration of doing, shock.

What claim is being made here, O wide one?

That Africans from such ghastly hellholes as Somalia, the Congo and Rwanda invariably come to the U.K. with a clean bill of health?

Your sources inside the N.H.S. will tell you – quietly, of couse, for fear of being called racists and xenophobes – that Africans are bringing some interesting pathologies with them.

    Celebrate diversity!

Right wing nutjob cronyism as opposed to the far left variety under Red Ken. Makes a change I suppose….

He’s got a long, long, way before he approaches levels of Ken and 80 of his closest friends from Socialist Action…

I’ll agree it’s shame there’s not more cross-party representation and it would be sad to see Boris go down the path of cronyism….

Can some help me? I have been trying to track down any racist articles by Anthony Browne, but can’t find any. I don’t like him, but feel uncomfortable about calling people racist unless I have proof.

    I agree with Marvin.

Thanks Rumbold, I agree it’s not fair (and potentially libelous surely!) to assert him simply as ‘racist’.

The articles are you present are not racist. What racist statements has he made precisely???

Example, I say: Of course HIV has dramatically increased due to an influx of people from Africa, some countries of which have an infection rate at 1/3 of the population.

That that is fodder for racists does not make the statement racist in itself.

    Sunny:

The Anthony Browne article starts out as “PC gone mad”, then turns into a one-sided histroy lesson. Dave Hill’s piece, while well written, doesn’t actually link to anything that Browne said. The same is true of the Nick Cohen piece. So while Browne doesn’t come across particularly well, there still is a lack of evidence that he is a racist.

He’s not a racist it’s quite simple. He may have similar talking points that a racist may also have, but that doesn’t make him racist, or wrong.

In the same way leftwing antizionism can be indistiguishable from neonazi antizionism.

further to cohens pience in new statesman, he changed his tune and later went on to write a column admiring abrown

‘Browne has stood up for free speech and against liberal alliances with radical Islam, and exposed the civil servants who were pretending that a rise in HIV was due to poor sex education rather than immigration from African countries where the virus is raging.’

Oh I see. So you can sound like a nutjob who thinks blacks are disease-ridden people who shouldn’t be allowed into the country but that doesn’t actually make you a racist because…. marvin said so!

And nice job bringing Israel into that conversation. I was wondering when that would happen.

Rumbold – If Browne had nothing to be sorry about, why did he later apologise to Jeanette Arnold?

I didn’t say he had nothing to be sorry about, I just haven’t found any examples of racism.

Ok well must be true.. Sunny says so! Ok I give up, you’re not going to provide quotations. He’s not a racist, then.

The left seems utterly incapable of dealing with certain issues.

People of African ethnicity, particularly individuals born in sub-Saharan Africa, bear the brunt of the heterosexual HIV epidemic in the UK32. Despite accounting for less than 1% of the UK population, black Africans made up almost half of all new HIV diagnoses in the UK in 20061.M.

Perhaps you AVERT “thinks blacks are disease-ridden people” too?

Or are they just stating the facts?
