In praise of “military means”

Aaaaand we’re back to our favourite topic – the continuing craziness of Spectator Magazine’s greatest star Melanie Phillips. But first this: a couple of weeks ago I pointed out that many people who constantly obsessed about Muslims and Israel/Palestine had started using the Sri Lankan / Tamil as a stalking horse for their own agenda. Where is the outrage in support of the Tamils, they screamed! It’s a conspiracy that no one is obsessed about Sri Lanka and they keep talking about Israel / Palestine!

There are of course several legitimate reasons why the Israel/Palestine conflict gets more coverage than the Sri Lankan/Tamil conflict, outlined here.

Unsurprisingly, Melanie Phillips is now employing that same exact tactic. And how many times did she write about the Tamils? Oh. But check out the money quote:

The lesson to learn from all this would therefore seem to be that terrorist insurgencies can only be defeated by military means — which in turn can only work if such measures are not undermined by the queasy neo-pacifism and defeatism of the west expressed through the surrender monkeys of human rights lawyers, NGOs and the media.

Damn those cheese-eating surrender monkeys for mentioning the plight of innocent Tamils! They just hate things like democracy, freedom and err… human rights! And to think that a mainstream political magazine and a daily newspaper give prime space to Melanie Phillips.

I quite like conspiracy theories, on the grounds that they tell you a lot about the person that holds them. If you go into Borders, there is a very interesting periodical called ‘Lobster’ which is edited by a guy called Robin Ramsay which is, sort of, devoted to the whole damn lot of them. (From a largely skeptical p.o.v.)

Anyway, young Ms Phillips is undoubtedly someone who is not skeptical of conspiracy theories. She is so open minded that her brain is quite likely to fall out!

Who can forget her embracing of the ‘Obama is a Muslim’ meme, or not an American. Or her idea that Intelligent Design has merit.

Says it all about the people that are bloody well paid to write op-ed, don’t it?

If Melanie Phiilips was any more full of s**t, her eyes would be brown.

Now, now, RG, I, like the majority of my fellow Jews (Katy excepted) have brown eyes.

So what are you trying to say to me eh, eh? :)

    LOL!

I should have put a disclaimer after my statement marking it exclusively applicable to Melanie Philips.

The Telegraph blogs do the same thing with Western Sahara as well. There’s something ever so slightly beautiful about the statement “Why do you make so much noise about Israel, yet utterly ignore the same things as me”

Ok, the fact that Mad Mel’s praised SLA’s method of crushing the LTTE doesn’t necessarily invalidate it :)

I don’t think there are universally applicable methods for defeating insurgencies. It depends on so many factors. But, if the insurgency insists on focussing primarily on military means without a concomitant politcial track… well, against a competent state, the results won’t look pretty.

What worked in SL won’t necessarily work in Afghanistan.

Mad Mel ignores Sri Lanka becuase it doesnt fit her “Evil Muslim” narrative- the Muslim minority in Sri Lanka is a peaceable one while it is elemnts in the Hindu minority who have been engaging in terror and ethnic cleansing (which Tamil Muslims have been victims of)

“The lesson to learn from all this would therefore seem to be that terrorist insurgencies can only be defeated by military means — which in turn can only work if such measures are not undermined by the queasy neo-pacifism and defeatism of the west expressed through the surrender monkeys of human rights lawyers, NGOs and the media.”

If only the British had applied that against zionist terrorists, eh Mel?

Was Melanie Phillips ever a Communist? She writes like one of those Hoxhaist anti-revisionists.
