Is Narendra “Butcher of Gujarat” Modi coming to London?

by Sunny on 21st February, 2009 at 11:28 pm

A reader has emailed in to say that Narendra Modi, the chief minister of the Indian state of Gujarat, also known as “the butcher of Gujarat” for his complicity in the violent riots of 2002, is coming to London.

Apparently he will be here for the “India Summit 2009″, May 19-20. Anyone know more on this? If true, this is going to be a massive controversy.

Update: Another reader sends this Times of India story with more.

From Sunny’s Times of India link:

‘Late last year, about 117 British MPs signed an Early Day Motion (EDM) in the House of Commons by Barry Gardiner which was all praise for ‘Vibrant Gujarat’. Gardiner followed up that motion by attending the Vibrant Gujarat summit on January 12-13 where he hailed Modi as ‘the lion of Gujarat’. ‘

Barry Gardiner, my goodness. Why, oh why Barry?

I have some press cuttings from the last time he was here where the government refused to meet him because of the killings. Who is Gardener anyway, he must have some financial or political stake in this?

Going back a few years the then director of Tower Hamlets Race Equality Council Cyriac Maprayil wrote a glowing piece about the BJP which can be seen by Googling him. There was an outcry by Bangladeshis in the borough and the CRE and the council pulled the money and the organisation was shut down.

Maprayil was paid to write the article and anyone supporting Modi should be viewed as on the take from the BJP and associated businessmen. If anyone knows of Maprayils whereabouts the police are looking for him in relation to a hundred thousand pound scam where he got money from the CRE for several years by forging letters from three MPs and a member of the House of Lords copies of which I have.

Most MPs don’t really know very much about most foreign countries. I suspect what happened is that a pro-Modi lobby group asked their MP to show support for Gujarat by signing an EDM. The MP, seeing no harm in doing so (and the benefit of signing something like that) did so, without ever doing any research on the matter.

maybe if he took israeli citizenship, then he’d have fewer problems plotting and scheming in london

Barry Gardiner - Chair of the ‘Labour friends of India’ group.

His knowledge of India would/should/could be better then the average MPs.

Its not Barry Gardiner’s Early Day Motion that is of specific concern, its his hailing of Modi as ‘the lion of Gujarat’.

This guy should be banned from entering the UK. He is no different from a genocidal dictator and what is even more shameful — he perpetrated his crimes in a democracy and has not been brought to justice.

He should be in jail along with some top cops and other senior administrations officials.

George Bush and his justice department did not give him right to enter the US and UK should do the same.

    11. jnas — on 23rd February, 2009 at 1:39 pm

Wrt billericaydicky’s comment, Barry Gardiner’s constituency is Brent North. According to the 2001 census, the Borough of Brent has the country’s highest percentage of people born outside of the UK (says Wikipedia) and significant proportion of these are of Gujarati origin.

There is no doubt Modi has blood on his hands re the post Godra riots but Britain regularly entertains politicians who have a less than clean history.

What about the Chinese and Israeli leaders?

Or how about Thaksin Shinawatra? His army butchered hundreds of innocent protestors over the years.

Anyway, it would be better if he was allowed entry to the UK. At least then more negative publicity will be created and thus more people will be aware of his crimes.

Much of what you say is true. Its not just the fact that he is coming here, its what he will do when he get here. He will be looking to mobilise and raise funds. That is the problem.

‘India Summit 2009′ will be no small event. He expects to be a star of the event. His kind always do.

And no doubt Barry Gardiner will be the one offering the garlands.
