New guest blogger: Reformist Muslim

Without the fanfare, garland exchanging and trumpet blowing , I’d like to present [1] Reformist Muslim, who will be guest-blogging on Pickled Politics for a month starting this week.

And while I’m here… it turns out Patels are not so bac- I mean [2] conservative after all !

At a mass wedding last week 45 couples, including members of the wealthy Patel clan, swore “never to have a sonography (scan) to find out the sex of our children”. Describing the practice as illegal, they pledged to “co-operate with all activities to curb the menace of female foeticide”.

The decision of the Patels, influential in Gujarat’s diamond industry, to publicise the new vows was remarkable. The state now has only 878 girls aged six and under for every 1,000 boys.

First thought - a mass wedding… to save money? Need I say more? Secondly - boys, you can forget about going ‘back home’ to find a bride because there ain’t any left!

What, are the Patels the Jocks, Catalans and front-wheeled skids of South Asia?
(Could this be my first-ever censored post? Have I undone all the good work? Can people take a gentle racist ribbing? What? Jackie Mason jokes about it all the time. It’s only a Cockneyism. In any case, in London these days it only refers to supporters of a certain football team. I mean, they call themselves that all the time. Back to the bottom of the class El Cid.)

El Cid

Patels have the reputation of being the shrewdest business people out of Indians - you know, always looking to get a bargain!

So have the three racial/national groups I mentioned, and as you know there is a fine line between shrewd business and an all-round reluctance to get the next round in!
I’m reminded of an ‘Arab’ saying/anecdote I read in an article today on Dubai:
A child asks his dad, “Dad, what’s 2 plus 2″, to which he replies “Depends. Am I buying or selling?”
