More anti-immigrant reporting
The Daily Telegraph is really going downhill. A story in yesterday’s paper told of us of an “exodus” from London of nearly 2 million British-born persons, who “fled” from the capital over the last decade, conjuring up images of Jim Davidson parting the Thames to lead his people to the promised land (Essex). But, even worse, the sub-headline informs us that these fleeing Britons have been replaced by 1.8 million immigrants.
Of course, when one reads the article and not just the headlines, one finds that over the same period 1.6 million Britons moved from other parts of the country to London. So, London only experienced a net loss of 34,500 Britons per year, or less than 0.6% of the total London population. But what was this reason for this sinister drain? As John Philpott, chief economist at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, put it:
“Many indigenous people just do not want to do jobs such as cleaning and can not afford the high property prices so move to the suburbs to bring up their families.”
Add to that economic regeneration in other cities (Leeds, Manchester, etc.), the number of people who live outside London but commute in, and an ageing population, and the small drop per year in the number of Britons living in London is easily explained. It has little to do with immigration. Not that one would know that if one based one’s views on Telegraph headlines.

I’m british asian born and bred in London for most of my life…and although i love london, i would probably want to move to surrey (just cuz i went to uni in surrey and loved it) …i wonder if the telegraph wanted people to read ‘british born’ as predominantly ‘white’???
How many of the Britons leaving London are white?
Im sure many British born ethnics are leaving London as well and even Britain as well, but the Tabloids wont mention them for obvious reasons.
Like some parts of Inner London, have gotten slightly whiter such as Kilburn, Swiss Cottage, Clapham, due to Yuppie influence.
Even if it really was 2 million leaving without being replaced would that really be a surprise? Living in London is expensive and in some parts increasingly dangerous.
What’s wrong with wanting a better and safer life elsewhere?
White filght is a reality to a lot of ex Londoners in Essex and the Costa del Sol.
and alot of those moving out (in the last year) are due to redundancies in the big financial & property sectors which are dominated by white males
You forget that Davidson [spit] already fled the country in 2004, with the comment: “I may as well go to Dubai and be an ethnic minority there than wait five years till I become one here.”
(Nothing to do with his bankruptcy here and tax-free status there, of course.)
Also Richard Littlejohn went to live in a gated community in Florida, USA.
“White filght is a reality to a lot of ex Londoners in Essex and the Costa del Sol”
where they don’t bother to integrate…stick to their own language and culture..ooohhh the things they complain about when talking about immigrants in this country…
They introduced Steak and chips to a whole new culture
‘Also Richard Littlejohn went to live in a gated community in Florida, USA.’
Ah yes, I’d expect nothing better from that great patriot. Any way of locking the gates from the outside?
This is a bit like saying ‘Daily Mail in anti-immigration story shock’!
But one expects better from the Telegraph. At least, one did.
i loved this line from Yasmin AB
One writer, Liz Jones, of white working-class stock, sees through the cultural protectionism. Responding to beer-swilling blokes in Wibsey Working Men’s Club, in Bradford, who said on television that they had lost their place as the backbone of the nation because Asians were overtaking them, she wrote: “A snail with special needs would overtake this lot … It is patronising and not remotely useful to treat the white working class as though they are all helpless, giant toddlers in need of conservation.”
