I know! I have to deal with the emasculated and nerdy Indian engineering student stereotype here on a daily basis .

Well some people have all kinds of weird ideas in their heads about Asians, based either on limited/highly subjective experiences or on complete guesswork & assumptions. And then they either get confused when you clearly undermine those notions or insulted & indignant if you decide to actually contradict them outright.

Goodness Gracious Me did a great job in shining a light on those attitudes and stereotypes. We really need a 2009 version of GGM, I tell ya. Or a British Asian version of the mighty Chris Rock.

I think upbringing is a real factor in this. The stricter (or more to the point the more your restricted compared to other kids in what you can do) your upbringing the more freedom you will desire (I know this from going to Catholic school and seeing all the guys go mental the minute they could get away from their parents).

It’s not a hard and fast rule but as I say I’m convinced your upbringing plays a real role.

And let’s not forget that Asians don’t date each other either, 99% have arranged marriages, Asian guys are only interested in white girls for sex whilst hypocritically keeping “their own women” suitably subjugated and repressed, all Asians these days are Muslims and divided into unthreatening nerds or aggressive religious fanatics, Asians don’t go on dodgy holidays to Ibiza, Asian girls don’t wear bikinis on beaches, and Asians in general don’t watch Hollywood blockbusters or Desperate Housewives, CSI, Big Brother or Coronation Street.

Anyhoo, it’s worth noting if you have children – imposing your strict views of religion and culture can lead to hard drugs

i was going to ask why this scrutiny on ‘asian women and drugs’ as if asian women couldn’t possibly be taking drugs for whatever reasons other people are!

It’s funny, I can see real parallels between the reputation and reality of Asian girls and Catholic girls…

and i don’t know about asian girls here, the reality of heroin use is generally very much tied with abuse, very difficult lives, and very often, a forced dependence. so think ‘pimps’ rather than ‘boyfriends’ – and what Halima says makes sense. again i dont know the situation here because i don’t know about asian girls & prostitution here, but look at the indian subcontinent.

I think most people have moved on from the ‘drugs = ruined lives’ equation, and I can’t speak for those that HAVE got addicted and screwed it up for themselves. Just for the legion who take something as regularly as they have a binge night on the drink, have a laugh, feel shit for a bit, then get on with their lives.

Not sure if the girls getting into drugs because of boyfriends angle isn’t patronising. I know plenty of guys who’d rather go home to a joint but more young girls who’d rather stay out and snort some more

As for heroin, in my experience, girls don’t really like it or get it. It makes you want to sit there and do nothing for hours and hours and hours, and I for one don’t know a single girl who thinks that’s a fun way to spend a weekend…

Having read the BBC article and the organisation they are talking to in the East End, I’d say it’s a pretty accurate reflection, not also forgetting there is a bigger issue of drugs mis-use with young men in the area.
