On Al-Jazeera English at 9:30pm

by Sunny
27th November, 2008 at 4:28 pm

I’ve been asked to come on Al-Jazeera English tonight at 9:30pm to talk about the Mumbai bombings (they want a British perspective)… which is in advance of a Question Time Extra debate at 11:30pm on BBC News 24, which I suspect might also focus on the Mumbai bombings now.
I’m going to try and pull together some thoughts on what this means for India and Pakistan, having written about their approach to terrorism recently for CIF while I was travelling through those countries.

If you mention Pickled Politics on either channel I will buy you any crepe you want- even a fair trade, organic one.

    Make that two crepes.

  3. Sunny — on 27th November, 2008 at 4:54 pm

I’m being introduced as editor of PP on Al-Jaz…

I want a fair-trade, organic crepe made by a hippie leftie!

Good news for your advertizers Sunny – just the sort to get the Al-Jiz target market excited :-) – where has that advert gone? – and you’ll get your cut of the click thru, but I do fear for the level of comment once PP is widely known

    Is Al-Jazeera on Virgin yet?

Or do I have to pull out my 1m steerable sat. dish and point it to Arabsat 2B 30.5 deg east?

  7. dave bones — on 27th November, 2008 at 5:26 pm

you are on question time extra as well?

  8. Sunny — on 27th November, 2008 at 5:29 pm

“I want a fair-trade, organic crepe made by a hippie leftie!”

Where’s Desi Italiana when you need her?

Good luck, and SOCK IT TO DA MAN! You have to represent the ‘Western’ massive (you, me, Rumbold and Tom) when you’re up there as well as PP… haha ;-) .

    #5:

-as opposed to #45 on the relevant thread today at 1.32pm,
which has thus far, in 4 hours and 30 entries, elicited neither comment nor response.
May one thus assume it is merely the harsher end of the the body of liberal indignation it dovetails into?

  12. Sid — on 27th November, 2008 at 5:40 pm

I wouldn’t take that kind of crepe.

Nice one Sunny! Looking forward to it. :)

Well, Part One of the Sunny double bill went very well, I thought. And PP got the mention he promised!

    Yeah! Not Liberal Conspiracy, us!

    :-)

  16. Leon — on 27th November, 2008 at 9:52 pm

Heh yeah it did go well, although that other guy was boring as hell and nearly put me to sleep…

  17. douglas clark — on 27th November, 2008 at 9:55 pm

Just as an aside, I thought that Al Jazeera comes across as a company with pretty high production standards. I hadn’t really watched it much recently, but their presentation of this atrocity was fair and level handed.

Respect to Al Jazeera. Is that a cruise missile I see outside my window?

  18. Leon — on 27th November, 2008 at 10:03 pm

Yep, and they do a lot of coverage of a story too, going to have to make a conscious effort to watch them more often…

  19. douglas clark — on 27th November, 2008 at 10:15 pm

    Leon,

    Watch the skies!

Al Jazeera appear to be accidentally hit by too many US munitions for it to be a joke.

    Anyway, lets watch Question Time.

  20. Leon — on 27th November, 2008 at 11:45 pm

Good answer by Sunny about there being different types of terrorists etc.

  21. Leon — on 27th November, 2008 at 11:48 pm

This other person is patronising. Also she comes across likes she’s just spouting sound bites/party lines, unlike Sunny who’s actually making sense and presenting thoughtful observations/opinions…

  22. douglas clark — on 28th November, 2008 at 12:05 am

What? You were watching Question Time Extra?

What a complete utter tit that woman was.

This was another win for our Sunny!

Two out of two. Who’d have thought it?

  23. Leon — on 28th November, 2008 at 12:08 am

    Yup, Sunny totally pwned!!

  24. dave bones — on 28th November, 2008 at 12:12 am

Caught the end of question time extra- missed the Mumbai bit. Do post a vid if you can. That was hilarious seeing Baroness Neuberger talking about prostitution. I used to know a stripper who looked like a slightly younger version of her.

    Just found her Online here

  25. Nyrone — on 28th November, 2008 at 12:24 am

    Well done Sunny!
and AJE has always been absolutely brilliant..

btw: You can watch it LQ streaming free by just going to the website..

    Look,

I love Sunny Hundal, so I do.

I would just like it if, sort of, if he could be be more agressive, like say Christopher Hitchins, or sommat.

  27. Sunny — on 28th November, 2008 at 1:36 am

    lol!

I’m actually trying to be more calm and disciplined, like Obama. Don’t want to come across as the Angry Asian Man and all that ;)

aww, but thanks guys. I have to admit it was better than most of my previously crap performances on tv.

  28. douglas clark — on 28th November, 2008 at 2:02 am

    Ok.

You do come across as calm and disciplined.

    Really.

And you come across 100% better than you used to.

But we need that aggression, you show here, so you do.

At least, that’s what I think.

I have never seen you as the average Angry Asian Man. Else, why would I like you?

    To the point. Really.

I’d quite like you to be our next PM. But you are not going to get there without being more aggressive with the accent. You really need to play the English game of talking quite loud, saying unutterable rubbish with a posher accent, as if it were true.

Says a Scot, who is a complete fail on all of that.

  29. dave bones — on 28th November, 2008 at 9:43 am

I just caught up with the first bit about Mumbai here. Interesting. I refer the people to the answer I gave some moments ago. (in 2005) Good job they don’t get me on telly. :-)

  30. Rumbold — on 28th November, 2008 at 9:53 am

Sunny was brilliant on Question Time extra. He had that Conservative MP practically confess to being a secret socialist.

  31. Leon — on 28th November, 2008 at 10:02 am

LOL! Rumbold, I thought that too, she was all over the place, and totally reading from briefing notes. At the end she was visibly shaking with nerves and looked like she just wanted to run!

I’m actually trying to be more calm and disciplined, like Obama. Don’t want to come across as the Angry Asian Man and all that

I think you achieved that; the power of your arguements and calm approach combine to create an effective weapon.

Definitely the best TV performance I’ve seen of yours.

  32. Rumbold — on 28th November, 2008 at 10:04 am

    Leon:

She seemed like a reasonable person, but she didn’t really have any arguments, or even details.

  33. douglas clark — on 28th November, 2008 at 10:06 am

    dave bones,

I like to think I understand where you are coming from. Perhaps I don’t.

It is is entirely responsible of you to enable, allow, whatever, silenced voices.

    That, I admire.

It is not, so far, clear to me, where you stand on the issues that you discuss.

Perhaps Pickled Politics would let you have a guest post to explain yourself.

Frankly, I have no idea whether you are an apologist, a fellow traveller, a John Pilger, a Studs Terkel or something else again.

Perhaps your pointlessness is your point?

I am cool with that right enough.

    Cheers.

Hi Sunny, i was a bit shocked to hear from you that Woolworhs should not be rescued Which would save the thousands of jobs. I was under the pression that you stood up for the common person, correctt me if I am wrong.
