A Nigerian Islamic court has sentenced a 20-year-old man to six months in jail and 30 strokes of the cane for idleness… Court clerk Tasiu Musa said that the judge sentenced the defendant for “having no job and also for associating with bad friends, which is an offence contrary to the Sharia penal code”.

Laugh at your peril but it shows how authoritarian and anti-freedom the sharia penal code system is. If his parents were so fed up with his idleness they could have thrown him out, giving him a crash course in adulthood.

Instead they have to resort to religious laws to violently teach their son to be less idle. Thank God Sharia Laws are founded on the ideological principle of peace. Just not peace towards those who are idle (or offend the administering bodies in some other way).

      Rab Rakha!
