“Evening Standard is for people so racist they refuse to pick up free newspapers dished out by foreigners”

Heh. Someone should tell this to Sunny's arch-nemsis Nirpal Dhaliwal :)

Ok Nyrone, I do have some grudging respect for the Independent, but that Robert Fisk drives me bonkers!

Marvin, I can't believe you would compare the fictional scare-mongering stories about Immigrants that the Daily Mail loves to flood their audience with, to the Climate Change reports within the Independent!

The Indy might have taken a serious hit with the appointment of that war-mongering prat Roger Alton, but it's stories are a world away from the the DM.
Any paper that gives so much space to Johann Hari, Bob Fisk and Yasmin Alibhai-Brown is alright in my book...

"Evening Standard is for people so racist they refuse to pick up free newspapers dished out by foreigners"

LOL!

I have met alot of visitors to the UK who thought the sun was a comic too. Nice one Kismet 13.

The Independent is the Daily Mail for people who recycle. Instead of made up stories about immigrants, it's made up stories about Israel, and telling us we're all doomed cos of climate change.

Kismet,
I loved your comment.
However, your ref to the Standard was a bit unfair.
It's a better read than the freebies.

Thabet,
The Guardian knows how to make up stories too (Tesco)
Even Reuters has had to backtrack on doctored photos.
I don't deny you have a point, but I could go on.

As someone that reads papers left on trains on journeys I make far afield to justify paternity cheques, I can assure you:

The Star is made up of stories about non-entinties with big boobs

The Sun is a comic for people who like tits and great fucking headlines (I Never Thought He'd Be Inside Me Twice _ about a woman raped by her son)

News of the world is a comic for people who like tits and superb fucking headlines (I've Got Ewe Under My Skin about Frank Sinatra fan having revolutionary skin surgery treatment involving sheep)

Dail Mail is for intelligent racists

Daily Express is for unintellegent racists

Evening Standard is for people so racist they refuse to pick up free newspapers dished out by foreigners

The Guardian is for people who are sure saying war is bad will get them laid

The Times is for people who think they may as well say war is okay because it won't make a slightest bit of difference in their chance of getting laid

The Independent is for people that don't know anyone that can sell them drugs but like to pretend they do

Metro, London Paper, Lite is for people who realised reading Life of Pi or Captain Corelli's Mandolin on the train didn't get them laid on the train so what the hey? At least the scary schoolgirl blaring out Usher at full volume on her mobile might not stab you today

Newspapers don't matter anymore.

We all read what we read not for knowledge but to pass the time

Muhamad @ 9:
Indeed, they're all crap!

Even the "freebie" papers (Metro, London Lite etc.) are no such thing. It's not the ads they carry which pay for the clearup or disposal of the mountains of those papers that roll out every day - it's US!

But last I heard, the "freebie" papers are fast becoming the most read in the country. Which sucks even more, because both The Metro and The London Lite are part of the Daily Mail group.

Which to my mind equates to more-or-less a direct and totally undemocratic transfer of yours and my council tax straight into the Daily Mail's coffers. (Credit where it's due - publishing a "free" paper that's basically paid for out of our council tax and travel fares is a pretty "innovative" business model.)

The Mule is well worth a read, and had a great piece on "Who Controls the British Media" in Issue 3. I'd like to link to it here, but unfortunately their website seems to have gone wrong, so I can't.

That clip is funny but clearly out of date.
I read all the papers named by Leon plus the Standard, Mirror and Sun (oh yes). I usually read the free online versions (along with Reuters, Drudge Report, yadda yadda yadda). But if I buy the printed version I will usually only get the Guardian, Standard, Times, FT, or Sun.
So how would the writers of Yes Minister define people like me (and Leon)? I may well regret asking that.

P.S.
You lot should dip into a red top now and then. Page 3 is a bit embarassing but these often know how to tell a story better than anyone. It might also help you to temper that poncey middle class bleeding heart liberal (or condescending ignorant tory toff) thing.
