    BMSD reaction to Undercover Mosque

    by Sunny
    2nd September, 2008 at 12:18 am

British Muslims for Secular Democracy are deeply concerned over the messages given out by preachers in one of Britain’s main mosques, as revealed by Channel 4’s Dispatches: Undercover Mosque, the return.

Female preachers are shown to be promoting segregation, condoning and justifying acts of violence against followers of other faiths and non-conformist Muslims. It is disturbing that such views continue to be propagated in Britain through holy places of worship. The misuse of such centres of prayer is inexcusable.

BMSD believes that by facilitating the preaching of hatred against members of other faith groups, the administration of the Islamic Cultural Centre, London (Regent’s Park Mosque) along with its Saudi Arabian patronage has become complicit in deepening the gulf between the Muslim communities and the wider British society and putting individuals at risk of physical harm.

BMSD appeals to the wider British public, and in particular to Muslim communities, to remain vigilant and take notice of any such activities within their local mosques, reporting them to the Police and local government bodies. The government has a responsibility to act and put an end to these activities as it did with Finsbury Park mosque.

Dr Shaaz Mahboob of BMSD said: “Mosques are supposed to provide an invaluable service to the Muslim communities and should not be allowed to become hubs of hateful preaching and bigotry. Should such activities continue unabated, the authorities will need to intervene to protect the public. This might even result in certain mosques getting closed down. Such an outcome will only hurt the majority of law abiding British Muslims, who continue to enjoy unparalleled amount of religious and cultural tolerance within the democratic system in Britain.”

“Should such activities continue unabated, the authorities will need to intervene to protect the public.”

i can’t see that being very popular. and anyway, who’s going to decide what’s “protection” and what’s not? the “preaching of hatred” is a subjective or so it seems - people don’t agree.

these people are going to be labelled as Non-Muslims, are they suggesting that anyone who is promoting segregation within the mosque shouldn’t be doing? not many people generally complain about segregation within mosques, just outside of it.

Umm Amira organises teaching circles - halaqa - where she describes Christians as “vile”. Another preacher, Umm Saleem, tells her congregation not to take British citizenship or become friends with non-Muslims. - check

Books and videos which contain preaching mullahs with the message that non-Muslims are “evil, vile”. These are sold in the Regents Park Mosque bookshop. - check

Text books used by children at the King Fahd Academy in Acton, west London, describe Jews as “repugnant” and Christians as “pigs”. - check

The claim is made by an academic that Kind Fahd of Saudi Arabia spent *70 billion dollars* on funding Wahhabi ideology around the world. - WTF?!!

I wonder if I’m the only person who misread that as BDSM? :-)

Nothing says “crank” more loudly than cutting and pasting screeds into blog comments.

By the way, I wrote a blog entry on Peter Hammond here.

Flipside we’ll all chip in if u want! You’re such a hater and your fingers must hurt from all that cutting and pasting. There are many narratives in Islam my friend and I can do the same ‘critique’ for all fundamentalist movements in the world. What really needs to be challenged is how the UK government allowed Wahabi ideology to spread into this country. They create the ghetto and then they condemn the ghetto methinks…

Not a single Imam preaches religious fascism and racial hatred; it is the British establishment and British media that portray them as the enemies of the state. The government gives them more weight than they are due. The so called hate preachers are just religious scholars to satisfy the social, spiritual and emotional needs and demands of the British Muslims in their own languages. It is absurd to expect them to learn English before departure for London. They are already well versed in Arabic, Persian, Urdu and mother tongues to satisfy the needs and demands of the Muslim community in their own languages. It is the duty of the native Muslims to prepare and educate Imams from its own community who can satisfy their needs and demands in local accents. Islam is the fastest growing religion in the United Kingdom.

The writer Oriana Fallies recently asserted that there is no difference between Muslim extremist and Islam. She still had no trouble winning an audience with the Pop Benedict.
David Cameron, the rising Tory star, campared Islamic extremist to the Nazis threat in the 1930s. Nazism is a European invention, practiced so called civilized Europeans. Nazi ideology is exclusively based on the supremacy of one race, while Islam is the exact opposite, all races being equal. Bush and Blair have repeatedly pointed to their cultures’ compassionate values, and condemned the barbarity of Muslim militants. Such talks offend many main stream Muslims, not only militants. The head of OFSTED said that the rise of Muslim schools is a threat to Britain’s sense of national identity and fail to teach tolerance. America’s religious Right regards Islam is an evil ideology that inspires young, angry, Muslim males in western society. An Australian professor Andrew Fraser alleged publically that African and Asian are congenitally inferior in terms of their intellectual capacity and naturally prone to violence. After 7/ 7, Prime Minister of Australia, without hard evidence, deliberately accused all Muslims of terrorism. He is asking Muslims to show loyality and blindly follow the Anglo-Saxon culture, but what will these loyal Muslims get in return for their blind loyality. The government policies will alienate young Muslims further and drive them towards dangerous extremism. By suppressing Islamism, West will make its ideas more attractive to already marginalized young men. The long-term solution to terrorism lies not in Guantanamo Bay or British prisons, but in education – education about other religions, tolerance, free speeches, the history and the respect for human life. It is not the Muslim schools or Muslim majority state schools; it is those schools where non-Muslims are in majority, needs serious attention in terms of anxiety, bullying of Muslim pupils and threats to Muslim teachers. The role of schools to be highlighted in challenging Islamophobia, schools need to ensure that all children must learn about Islam.

“The claim is made by an academic that Kind Fahd of Saudi Arabia spent *70 billion dollars* on funding Wahhabi ideology around the world. - WTF?!!”

I think you’ll find that is nonsense put out by neocon organisations. Most of that 70 billion is spent on bulding mosques over which they have no control.

Also please cite the source. If you actually read the source you’d realise even they acknowledge that much of the money is spent on building mosques.

Also 70 billion dollars pails into insignificance with the amount spent by right wing christians to spread their ideology which is rarely if ever investigated or criticised even though they now have massive influence on many democracies.
