We already have Good Curry Awards, etc...how about a week when we only eat bland food and celebrate delicacies like bread rolls and chips. Seriously, though, common sense courtesy is probably the most important British value we should uphold. Have you seen how all these bloody Eastern Europeans never queue for a bus anymore and push their way past women and children. Drives me insane!

I would love to listen !
Even though I know I can find a link, you should do a post on what was said anyway ..:)
Did you see this?
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/24/world/europe/24crete.html?em
It's sad in a lot of ways.
Though the second page is more in defense, I love the English both as a country and people, always been drawn to it, makes me angry to see such negative examples always being used ... (to describe americans as well)
Its only recently I have come to understand the term nanny state .. why the fight over civil liberties, and what "British tolerance" means...
now I'm just sad ... I love you guys

Well it doesn't help the cause does it Boyo when the debate comes around about Britishness and all the 'indigenous population' can talk about is multi-culturalism.

It seems to a lot of people from black to white, from tory to labour, from multi-cultural to mono cultural. The only thing that unites us is moaning about things and not actually behaving in a way which would promote the way you say you want life to be.

If you think British people should celebrate their culture then go out there and do it. Could it be there is no 'liberal conspiracy (tm)'. Just good old fashioned British indifference.

Feeble gesture politics. I wish Brown would disassociate himself with Britishness, it makes it seem feeble and sad. Britishness is certainly NOT about flag-waving. You want to promote it? Promote it's values -

Fair play (old boy)
Freedom of speech (of the I diagree with what you say but I'll fight for your right to say it, what!)
Parliamentary democracy
Peculiar constitutional arrangements that just work because EVERYONE GETS ON
Equality before the law
Honesty
Community
Modesty
Live and let live
A sense of bleeding humour

Not quite sure how we can inculcate these values. I certainly DON'T think multi-culturalism, albeit well-meaning, has helped, perhaps precisely because the essence of Britishness is the unsaid - the unwritten constitution, etc.

We have ended up with a climate whereby everyone EXCEPT the indigenous population is encouraged to celebrate their culture and Mr Sunny Hundal wags a finger when you say well, actually, I'm British, and he says: whatsat?!

Aarghh..

I'd be quite happy for a minor nation like, say, Scotland, to win a few gold medals on their own. This is perhaps the worst example of "Britishness" that I have ever seen.

Be careful, they might suggest that 90% plus of the Olympic Medals they won were by Oxbridge types. Holymoly!

Not in track and field they weren't.

'Of course, I think its a silly half-hearted effort when we should be going a lot further.'

What, you mean like a whole WEEK off?! :-P

I wouldn't argue with that!
