Tiger Taliban

I’ve linked the Asia Times in my next post. When I was perusing the site, their top story caught my attention. As of now, I can’t find a great deal more to substantiate these claims.

Apparently the Taliban-led anti-US resistance, who now reside between Pakistan and Afghanistan, have grown close to the LTTE, or Tamil Tigers of Sri Lanka:

“The resistance has steadily taken steps, though, to beef up its arsenal to include modern automatic weapons and ground-to-air missiles. This it has done in part by forging closer links with the resistance in Iraq, as well as with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in Sri Lanka.”

The article claims that al-Qaeda (wait a second, I thought we were talking about the Taliban?) deemed the US Cole attack a failure and as a direct result, sent a team to enjoy the Jaffna gin and Colombo casinos and pick up maritime expertise from those salty sea dogs, the LTTE.

“Pakistani intelligence sources say that al-Qaeda now works with the LTTE to get weapons, including automatic arms and ground-to-air missiles. The weapons are paid for in cash, as well as in drugs originating from Afghanistan, according to the sources. The drugs primarily are sent to Scandinavian countries and Thailand, the latter being a traditional base from which the LTTE has smuggled weapons.”

The article gives credence to the ‘general theory of terrorism‘. Read the whole article here.

In other news, the latest issue of Britain’s leading Asian fashion magazine, Asiana, has just come out. Now just take a look at what sits atop their hot-or-not column. That’s right baby, Pickled Politics is HOT. The issue promises its readers the 50 hottest eligible brown bachelors in the UK, but has committed a grave judgement error in the selection of one particularly geeky, malnourished PP staff writer ;)

You should hold your sarcasm. I’m not surprised by this; I recall a number of years ago, a trio of IRA bombers were nabbed red-handed in Columbia providing their expertise in bomb making to the Marxist FARC.

Sarcasm was merely aimed at the inconsistency in the article, I’m not denying that terrorists help each other out. Indeed the IRA and the LTTE, both of which are less active than they used to be, have provided expertise for not a few, but many paying customers.

Incidetnally, I remember a while back there was a expose about the IRA going to Bogota, Colombia, to learn techniques and get trained from the local insurgents there. Or was it the ETA? So that general theory of terrorism would have some credence.

General Theory of Terrorism I don’t think so, More the well tread principle of my Enemy’s Enemy is my friend.

It should also be noted that the Tamil Tigers target Tamil Muslims as government supporters

Though there is a very strong connection with

Or maybe its just show me the money
    from Jane’s Int Review 2004

“This method of transportation reflects a well-established link between the LTTE – which frequently shops for small-arms and other munitions in Thailand – and an Arakanese maritime mafia associated with the now largely defunct Arakan Army insurgent group”

Going back even further the PLO regularly trained and equiped the various Red Army Faction etc. Its hard to envisage the same sort of relationship between the Neo-Taliban & the Tamil Tigers
