    Suzuki Marauder

    And no, it’s not a mid-life crisis. I wanted a bike since I was 18.

And I’m only doing this because a friend said I should also blog about personal things sometimes because people want to know about me not just my politics. I don’t believe that, but I can’t resist being the proud owner of this bike.

Later in the summer I plan to get a more powerful version. Let’s see how long this manages to survive (and hopefully me).

Its just a Suzuki Marauder 125cc. I prefer this style over the racer bikes.

Hmmm 125cc is a little over my lawn mower. Still, maybe we should get a sidecar and all the PP posters can go turns.

Has your 16 year old younger brother got his first bike then? Sweet.

What did you want before you were 18?

      I know what I wanted ;-)

cool styling – but can 125cc move all that metal.

You should have gone for classic Royal Enfield. Now that would be cool!

“Sunny, I have a BMX bike. Do you wanna race? I bet I could smoke you!”

I bet you could. I used to ride a 125cc scooter which I could pick off the floor. This baby’s extra weight (I really like the look Sunny) means it ain’t gonna move too fast.

Now, if we’re getting into the business of showing off our latest motoring acquisitions, here’s the latest addition to the Rohin Family. Booooya.

(No comments about oil, petrol, carbon, greenery – I never claimed to be an environ-mentalist and I eat meat. I’m the Venom to Sunny’s spiderman.)

Bikes are environmentally friendly compared to cars anyway! I’m certainly not planning to walk everywhere :D

And yes, I know 125cc isn’t exactly the most powerful out there, but it’ll do for now. I’m going to buy a bigger one in a few months time. It goes pretty fast though.

    20. cjcjc — on 20th June, 2008 at 3:33 pm

Yeah that’s if you make anoher poker game! By the time you make the next one, I’ll have a diff bike!

Bikes are environmentally friendly compared to cars anyway!

difficult one there – I’m not upto date on the LCA of a bike – opposed to cars, but if it factored in the cost of death and injury (cost of treatment and lost cost of investment in the life lost) I think it may be a close run thing.

PS carry your “doner card” :-) – that will up your environmental quotient

    27. Rohin — on 20th June, 2008 at 4:40 pm

My favourite classic BMW would have to be the 2002.

Well, everyone’s entitled to their opinion jff. Clarkson agrees with me on this model (which, incidentally, is supposed to be a resurrection of the 2002), even though he dislikes BMW…but I doubt Clarkson is a popular character on PP so I won’t persist!

Yes I’ve read a lot about the GINA concept – looks amazing. Might be the future, who knows.

    28. justforfun — on 20th June, 2008 at 4:54 pm

yes the 2002 – my brother had one. It was a great car. Not as reliable as one would have thought though.

The last of the BMW’s before they started making cars for yuppies with the the 3 series. But mustn’t grumble – the 3 series and VW Golf Mk1 were two cars that saved BMW and VW from extiction. The UK never had an equivalent best seller that could save BL.

      the new M1 ?
      http://www.coolhunting.com/archives/2008/04/bmw_m1.php

I had a ride in the original M1 25 years ago – mind blowing trip down the M4. 120 mph was fast then :-) – now its passe

    29. Rohin — on 20th June, 2008 at 5:02 pm

As an aside jff, if a given car company makes cars for yuppies, is that a bad thing? Is being a yuppie bad? Just looked it up and it’s defined thus:

(short for “young urban professional” or “young upwardly-mobile professional”)[1] refers to a market segment whose consumers are characterized as self-reliant, financially secure individualists (wiki)

Which sounds like something I’d aspire to. BUT if you mean making cars for yuppies means said car company puts less emphasis on substance and more on style, I’d agree. But you just have to look at the N54 engine to realise it’s not true for BMW. Many – if not most – BMWs BOUGHT are not impressive vehicles, like the innumerable 318s on the roads. However one can’t tar all with one brush. The 135i, 335i and the M-badgeds are quite spectacular cars.

    30. Indrak — on 20th June, 2008 at 5:44 pm

      #29: terminologically tautologous,
but self-reliant, urban professionals? -NO. Their everything would collapse without cheap oil [$500/brl wld still be too cheap], let alone their exploiting share of the labour of those they are in the process of mobiling up from, as well those in china.

When bmw’s were first marketed in UK in the 60′s after passing through near demise [from having awful cars, and bavarian pride had precluded rescue under the care of schwabian DaimlerBenz], potential customers’ concerns that the car was a bit expensive were met with: “No, they’re VERY expensive”. The path was set and emulated. It still took decades to progress beyond the obsession against DB, which simply engineered better, and were happy to be staid, for they competed with no one.

Lovely looking bike Sunny. I used to own a Honda VFR 400 about 3 years ago. Have also owned an old classic 350 (1970s model). I don’t have any photos at all – shame, I wanted to be the first girl on here to post a pic of my bike!
Sunny, after a bit of practise, take it to France and Spain, you will LOVE riding on those roads.

      Justforfun,

Yes a Royal Enfield would have been more appropriate as they make them in India. When the British motorbike industry finally collapsed some Indian bought the entire factory in North London and shipped it home.

I was amused to see the 1970s described as producing classics. I was born in 1946 and grew up seeing, and late owning bikes, and cars, that were pre Second World War. A list of British bike manufacturers will probably surprise most of you. BSA from Birmingham, AJR named after the founder of the company Arthur John Peterson, the great Truimph, I had a Bonneville 650 a masively big engine in those days.

There were a number of two strokes as well and companies Like Excelsior and Ariel come to mind all. My two favourites were both big beasts. A 1954 Ariel four cylinder shaft drive and a 1960 ex Beglgian police Harley Davidson. In 1969 I paid £240 quid for it, 1000 cc with a foot clutch and hand gear change. That was the summer Easy Rider was released, I just counld’t go wrong!

The writing was on the wall for the Britiash bike industry but they could’t see it. I saw my first Honda in 1963 and my first Japanese sports car in 66, a Mazda. They were cheap and reliable. Hardly ever broke down and started on the button on the coldest mornings.

Both bike and car makers just refused to accept that they had competition with the result that we have now. No British bikes and whatever cars are produced are foreign owned. Let that be a lesson to everyone, never get complacent.

Of course to be really cool Sunny you need a classic restored Vespa or Lambretta, the only problem is cost. Some friends of mine are selling restored 1960s TV 175 Lambrettas for up to seven grand. Still you could be out there with your paka and Paul Weller hairstyle off down to Brighton for remake of Quadrophenia! Just a thought!

    41. davebones — on 22nd June, 2008 at 1:09 pm

You can find antique Nortons, Ariels, Harleys etc for sale in Delhi

    42. davebones — on 22nd June, 2008 at 1:21 pm

Japanese factory customs have a long tradition of laughability and ugliness from the CX500 custom onward whereas Harleys are totally uncool since they went on the advertising executive hard sell. If I were to take to two motorised wheels again and wanted spine problems I’d get a home made jap engined hard tail off of ebay. Like this one maybe More likely I’d get the sort of midweight roadster everyone buys in this country cos they suit British roads so well.

    43. Nav — on 22nd June, 2008 at 2:08 pm

      Sunny:

Put the Preview button back on please.

Anyhoo- you are having a mid life crisis and look a youth-obsessed nutjob on yer bike.

      I jest!

This is my Father in the 1960s or 70s in his pindh of Nangal, Dist. Hoshiarpur, Indian Punjab. The first man, so he tells me, to have a Harley Davidson in India.

I don’t believe him on either account but it’s a nice story nonetheless.

    44. Indrak — on 22nd June, 2008 at 3:42 pm

@42: Do u mean in general, eliding over the help they sought from Porsche-consultancy in engine design,
or the stunning recent campaign saying it’s unpatriotic to mind the news..:
“Harley has also shipped thousands of bandannas bearing the “Screw it, Let’s Ride” motto to its dealers to give away for free.”

      #40: Triumph is here still.
As is a ’62 Heinkel which may yet be restored.
