… and it had to be Leicester, unsurprisingly. What a bizarre ceremonial hat though. Munjula Sood was born in Ludhiana. Well done to her.

The report refers to her as “Lord Mayoress”! Bizarro.

A lord mayor is a lord mayor, regardless of sex.

A lady mayoress is the wife or official consort of a lord mayor. This lord mayor will presumably have to appoint someone to fulfil that role.

And Lord Mayoress is what Mr Mayoress became shortly after bunging £1 million to Labour Party campaign funds.

Not strictly true this, is it?

Can I refer you to the Right Honourable The Baroness Shreela Flather, LLB, JP, DL Windsor And Maidenhead.

Baroness Flather was born in Lahore, British India.

In 1990, Baroness Flather became the first Asian woman to sit in the House of Lords. She started her career with voluntary work in the Asian Community. She was a Borough Councillor for fifteen years, being the first ethnic minority woman Councillor when first elected in 1976. She became Deputy Mayor of Windsor and Maidenhead in 1985/86 and the Mayor in 1986/87, being the then first Asian woman Mayor in the United Kingdom.

She was a Conservative in those days although I believe she has since become a crossbencher.

      Sunny,

I,m surprised at you. This smacks of the anti white triumphalism that graces the pages of the ethnic press. Lord Mayors are elected on Buggins turn. They are deals done between political parties and have nothing whatsoever to do with the abilities, or lack of them, of the person elected.

It is usaully a question of some favour being traded off for another. What is interesting is how a group of Labour MPs, all of whom are Asian, have refused to back the demands for all black short lists. An article on the OBV site almost called them traitors to the cause of black unity, you listening bob?

I certainly don,t think it is matter for congratulations which definately should won the 1968 Eurovision song contest!

Interesting responses to Nick Cohen’s article about the Channel Four program on the radical preachers and some serious allegations against named Asian officers are made on CiF.

Cllr Jyoti Vaja was elected Mayor of Islington Council 2006-7. She was actually elected by the Liberal Democrat Group on merit after serving 4 years as Cabinet Member for Housing.

salam to everyone. congratulations asia for recieving such an honor. i give my heartiest cong to the lord mayor MUNJULA SOOD. she is an inspiration for every woman . but i wud like to add that she is not the first lady from asia to recieve such a nobilty coz SHREELA FLATHER WAS THE FIRST ONE. Baroness Flather (born 13 February 1934) WAS a teacher and British politician.

She has been a life peer for the Conservative party since the 11 June 1990 as Baroness Flather, of Windsor and Maidenhead in the Royal County of Berkshire. She was the first Asian woman to receive a peerage.

Baroness Flather attended University College London. She has served as Deputy Mayor and as Mayor for the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.

She has also been a teacher of English as a second language and a member of the Conservative Women’s National Committee. Baroness Flather has been recognised as Asian Who’s Who Asian of the Year 1996.

She has served senior posts in various organisations involved in refugee, community, race relations and prison work.

As a member of the House of Lords, she gained attention for wearing a sari and for being among the first ethnic minorities in the house. Along with many other Tory frontbenchers in the House of Lords, she threatened to resign the Conservative whip over the demotion of Viscount Cranborne for his actions to reduce the impact of the 1999 House of Lords Act.
but ofcourse lord mayar munjula is the first mayor after all.
