    This attack ad is brilliant

by Sunny on 17th April, 2008 at 9:08 am

Some anonymous Ken Livingstone supporter made an ad and sent it to Hopi Sen, who uploaded it. It’s bang on the money, even if Ken can’t run it for political reasons.

And, Tory Troll: Boris Johnson can never be accused of leadership

not bad, but not as innovative as some of the current US guerilla marcomms

      “Some anonymous Livingstone supporter.” Right.

If anything it reminded me how he talks the talk but invites the promoters of suicide bombing to the scene of their infamy.

No surpise, then, that they are now campaigning for Ken.

‘London needs a leader’…good strap-line that. Fairly decent vid a little too long though. Be interesting to see if any Bojo ’supporters’ come up with something similar.

Oh yeah and I agree with Boyo above, I seriously doubt this was just a supporter…

    4. cjcjc — on 17th April, 2008 at 11:23 am

That is a very effective video, I have to admit – and I will be voting for Boris!

I can think of a few clips which would portray Ken in a bad light, but what would I use to make Boris look especially good?

      I’ll come back to you…

    5. Leon — on 17th April, 2008 at 1:20 pm

Kudos for your honesty there cjcjc, very few Bojo supporters I’ve seen would be that frank about their chosen candidate.

That evening standard story is such bull. For a start, its headline is untrue.

    7. bananabrain — on 17th April, 2008 at 3:59 pm

perhaps, but is azzam tamimi someone whose support ken should be soliciting?

erm, he hasn’t solicited it, though, has he? his website links to blogs but not those guys.

It is very reminiscient of the Republican attack ads used to demonise those running against Bush (i.e. the “Bush was in office when disaster struck, so he can cope with it again. Can Kerry/whoever?”). Interesting how supporters of Ken often talk about his political experience as his strongest point, yet the same supporters are often the biggest Obama fans, who has nothing like the experience of John or Hilary Clinton. Having one’s cake and eating it one might say.

Here’s what Peter Oborne has to say (scroll to bottom) about the repulsive Ken Livingstone…

      A mayor’s nest of duplicity

The biggest change in politics since I started out as a reporter nearly a quarter of a century ago concerns the role of personal integrity.

It used to be generally accepted that the career of any politician who got caught lying would immediately be finished.

Today, however, falsehood and deception are regarded as just part of the game.

The most vivid example of this remains Tony Blair and his position over the Iraq war.

But Ken Livingstone now runs him quite close. The London Mayor can accurately be described as an almost habitual pathological liar.

In recent years, he has misled voters about the benefits of staging the Olympic Games in 2012, about the capital’s bus service, the congestion charge, his personal life and a very great deal besides.

This week, Livingstone made his first political broadcast of the campaign.

He told viewers: ‘With me, everyone knows what they’re getting. It’s on the tin.’

This is simply not the case. I would advise London voters to assume as a matter of course that everything Ken Livingstone says is false unless they can independently confirm otherwise.

Interesting how supporters of Ken often talk about his political experience as his strongest point,

Rumbold – there’s a huge difference between Obama’s lack of political experience and Boris Johnson’s! For a start, the latter hasn’t run anything substantial while Obama was state and US senator earlier. Secondly, the fantastic way Obama has run his campaign is credit to his leaderships skills. Thirdly, Boris is a bumbling fool who has little idea about what’s proposing, and his shambolic transport policy is perfect example of that.

Well, it’s only half attack ad. The other half was a demonstration of how genuinely brilliant Ken was in those days after 7/7. He stepped up and I think a lot of people will remember that.

      Meanwhile, Brian Paddick talks the truth on Livingstone;

      Paddick slams ‘nasty’ Livingstone

Lib Dem mayoral hopeful Brian Paddick has launched a personal attack on his Labour rival Ken Livingstone, calling him a “nasty little man”.

Mr Paddick told the Evening Standard the mayor was “very unpleasant” and treated all critics with “contempt”.

The former police commander said Tory candidate Boris Johnson was “somewhat eccentric” but “harmless”.

Mr Livingstone, who is running for a third term as mayor, claims London is more successful than ever under him.

Mr Paddick, the former Lambeth police commander who pioneered a “softly softly” approach to cannabis, told the newspaper Mr Livingstone had tried to set up a “socialist republic” at City Hall and accused him of cronyism.

      ‘Personal agendas’

He said the mayor relied on a close circle of left wing advisers and had stopped listening to Londoners.

He added: “Do you want somebody who is a really nasty little man in the shape of Ken Livingstone, very unpleasant and rather nasty, or somebody who just appears to be somewhat eccentric but otherwise really harmless as an individual, except I wouldn’t trust him to run anything for me?”

He said he had considered a Conservative approach to run for them but “on principle” could not stand for “what the Conservatives stand for”.

Mr Paddick, who has put himself forward as the “serious candidate” for London mayor, has pledged to act on voters’ priorities not “personal agendas”.

Mr Livingstone’s office was not available for comment. But the mayor says he keeps in touch with Londoners’ concerns by taking the Tube to work and says he is the “mayor for all Londoners”.

He has also accused the Evening Standard of being out to get him and of “doing one last heave to get rid of me”.

A YouGov survey for the Standard on Monday suggested Conservative candidate Boris Johnson was on course to get 45% of first preference votes, Mr Livingstone on 39% and Mr Paddick on 12%. A sample of 1,031 people were polled via the internet between 9 and 11 April.

    14. Boyo — on 17th April, 2008 at 8:36 pm

Sorry to cast doubt on St Ken, but how hard can it be to say the right thing in circumstances like 7/7? Rudi launched an election career on not being a coward, and Bush confirmed out suspicions, but really… what did you expect him to say? We give in? Damn those Muslims, let’s lynch the buggers? I’m sorry, but his “performance” wasn’t such a big deal, sentimental saps ;-)

    15. Rumbold — on 17th April, 2008 at 9:00 pm

      Sunny:

Obama and Boris have both been members of a legislature. Obama and Boris have both run successful campaigns which moved them from outsider to front-runner. Boris’ transport figures were pretty shambolic, but Obama has not been without his set-backs either. I think that there is a closer comparison between them then meets the eye.

“what did you expect him to say?

Well, did the words of a certain Tony Blair on the same day resonate in any way? No, not really.

There is a lot of space between “we give in” and “damn those Muslims” and Ken managed to find some sincerely heartfelt words that reflected what a lot of Londoners felt. I say this, by the way, as someone who has never voted for New Labour and never voted for Ken Livingstone.
