  • Is Hazel Blears on drugs feeling ok?

    by Sunny
    3rd April, 2008 at 3:07 pm

You never know with our politicians because they come out with the most absurd things sometimes. Today Hazel Blears has said she will “break up Islamic ghettoes”.

In a speech which is set to spark a storm Communities Secretary Hazel Blears will say there is a need to take a hard look at the impact of immigration on cities. It will be the first time a senior Government minister has called for the break-up of areas dominated by racial or religious groups.

And it follows Church of England Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali attack on Islamic extremists for creating no-go areas across Britain.

She will tell the Left-wing Fabian Society: “No neighbourhood should be dominated by one group in ways which make others feel alienated or unsafe. We must ensure community cohesion is maintained. No one faith or ethnic group can dominate a locality to the exclusion of all others.” She went on to say there was “nothing wrong” with unthreatening cultural enclaves, such as traditional China Towns.

So the Chinese are ok, but Muslims are not. What does that mean? Exclusion orders? Forcibly removing people out of their homes? Or, horror!, forcing white people to move back?? Bet they’d really love that.

Here’s two points to remember. First, when that idiotic Bishop Nazir Ali was talking about ‘Muslim no-go areas’, he didn’t really mean it. This is from an email Indigo Jo received from his office:

I would wish to make it clear that I was not referring, as some have implied, to the situation which arose in some neighbourhoods in Northern Ireland some years ago which the authorities felt constrained from entering. I was referring to the situations which were first reported by Lord Ouseley and Ted Cantle, but subsequently by many others down to and including the Commission on Integration and Cohesion of last year and Sir Trevor Philips even more recently.

The fact that none of our media, including the so-called ‘liberal BBC’, pressed him further on what the hell those no-go areas where, proves how willing they are to accept this as a statement of fact. But Ali himself admits he was just generally referring to the multiculturalism rather than his own experiences.

Secondly, Blears won’t admit this, as will no Labour or Tory politician, but ‘ghettoes’ come from white flight not brown people forcing white people to leave. This plans to ‘smash Muslim ghettoes’ is so stupid that Blears needs her brain checked. There’s nothing the Labour party can do, short of turning Britain into a police state and forcing people to move into other areas, to deal with it.

The idiots from the Labour party have decided that immigration is something they need to campaign on, in order to reconnect with the masses, so they’ve decided to follow the Tories on making absurd statements.

Post update: I blame the Daily Mirror for my over-reaction yesterday afternoon. Its own article was inflammatory enough. However, having actually read her speech, I’m happy to say that Hazel Blears actually talked a fair bit of sense.

There’s plenty of areas you would say No to going to for safety reasons. But some of us don’t have any choice.

But it’s alright if you’re a Labour MP. You just wear a stab vest.

And Sunny, you’ve taken Blears comments way to literally. Lets face it, the Labour party dont have the guts to improve these areas that are unsafe (be it asian in Barking or White in all asian Bradford area)

    2. Sid — on 3rd April, 2008 at 4:37 pm

Will she break up the WWC ghettos in Barking and Dagenham?

    3. Bert Rustle — on 3rd April, 2008 at 5:17 pm

Sunny wrote … ‘ghettoes’ come from white flight not brown people forcing white people to leave. … An absence of the indigenous population by itself would not make Bradford or Southall or other minority indigenous areas a ghetto. Areas with a majority of Muslims or Sikhs or Hindus or Somalians or West Indians or Nigerians would be a ghetto. By implication majority indigenous areas are also ghettos.

As will all members of the Ruling Class, I wonder where does she live and exactly how are her children educated. Should she not set an example by moving into a non-indigenous ghetto herself, together with her children?

How will she break up something they said didn’t exist!

Just more PR for a bit of vote winning and Blears not beiong so close to Muslims is ideal to pick on them.

I’d just like to point out that ‘white flight’ isn’t necessarily driven by prejudice.

East london for example has a large ethnic population and high demand for property. Minorities may choose to stay in the area because of the ability to access mosques/temples, be close to large extended family and have food and spice shops at hand.

On the other a fair amount of the wwc who are unwilling to pay that premium for living in a dense urban environment, have chosen to move out to places such as canvey island in essex.

Their they have access to larger properties, maybe better schools and less stress.

Islamic Ghettos? Sounds like a clothing line…

    7. Avi Cohen — on 3rd April, 2008 at 6:56 pm

I’d say that there are White Areas where ethnics are afraid to go rather than the other way round.

It reminds me of Auf Wiedersein Pet when they go to a curry house and the asians don’t speak English and they compalin about that asking what can be more English than a curry!!

It is natural that communities live together, but to say there are no go areas is nonsense.

That is proved by the fact that Blears own party has MPs from these so called no go ghettos and they go there and campaign in an area which is apparently no go!

The woman has it in for Muslims because what she is saying the other minorities are ok its just them Muslims. Phil Woolas is the same.

I have less time for Blears than I do for most politicians, and that is a very low starting point, but the stab vest thing (#1) is unfair. You do a photo-op on a construction site, you wear a hard hat. You tour a food processing plant, you wear a hair-cover (unless you are Royalty). You visit a hospital, you wash your hand between patients (unless you are Michael Howard). You go out with coppers wearing stab vests, you put one on. She was not nervous about getting stabbed. She may well be a ghastly person, but that issue was just lazy, cheap journalism.

This proposal is ham-fisted, half-cocked and obviously made up on the hoof. I don’t know London, (and Shariq’s analysis sounds reasonable) but in Newcastle recent immigrants tend to live in the areas where housing is cheapest. I’m guessing that is fairly common. After a while, people drift towards the leafy suburbs if they can afford it. It’s mostly about money, does Blears have a plan to change that?

The Chinatown caveat is just weird. It’s not a ghetto, it’s themed.

Presumably Blears will be demanding next that all-white rural villages and country towns assimilate or die.

      Classic dog whistle politics.

See Phil Woolas for other Labour examples.

“No one faith or ethnic group can dominate a locality to the exclusion of all others”

      That’s my village ****ed then.

I wonder how she proposes to “break them up”. Bulldozers ?

    13. SalmanRush — on 3rd April, 2008 at 11:42 pm

I think Hazel Blears should BREAK DANCE in Islamic ghettoes.

    14. MaidMarian — on 4th April, 2008 at 12:08 am

      Perhaps a little devil’s advocate-ing.

‘No neighbourhood should be dominated by one group in ways which make others feel alienated or unsafe. We must ensure community cohesion is maintained. No one faith or ethnic group can dominate a locality to the exclusion of all others.’

I don’t see anything particularly to disagree with on the face of that. It is written in civil service-ese which makes it all a bit opaque, but that aside I don’t see anything deserving of a talk-board lynching.

Looking at the Mirror article, the phrase, ‘break up,’ does not appear to be a direct quote and it looks like the journalist has put words into Blears’ mouth a little. Sunny also puts the words, ‘smash muslim ghettos,’ in inverted commas, but I can’t see that in the Mirror article either.

Granted, the rhetoric Blears uses is unwise and it sounds pie-in-the-sky around the edges to say the least. Equally though I think that the article rather stretches what seems to have been said, in no small part to grind axes with Blears.

Perhaps a more valuable exercise Sunny would be to draw attention to areas where white and brown have been rubbing along nicely for a long time now, looking out of my window I am quite confident that this mixed area won’t be the scene of a race riot. Hazel Blears or not.

      Sorry.

From Canada, White is minority in this city

    16. Tom — on 4th April, 2008 at 8:24 am

“No one faith or ethnic group can dominate a locality to the exclusion of all others.’”

‘Blears Attacks White Community’ could be another reading of this, after all we do dominate quite a few areas of the UK, not least rural Suffolk where my school of 1200 had 2 Asians and one black girl. However, I don’t think that’s what she meant, somehow.

Round here, I’m glad to say, we’re reaching the community nirvana of having absolutely no idea at first sight where someone comes from, and having to actually talk to them to find out. I presume we’re not uniquely gifted in this?

    17. Antipholus Papps — on 4th April, 2008 at 1:35 pm

There’s nothing the Labour party can do, short of turning Britain into a police state

Erm.. isn’t that exactly what they’re doing? Where have been for the past ten years?

    18. MaidMarian — on 4th April, 2008 at 1:43 pm

      Antipholus Papps -

Have you ever spoken to or met someone who has lived in a real police state or authoritarian country?

This whole, ‘New Labour is making Britain a police state,’ line makes me very angry not only because of the lazy thought. It is actually not that far short of an insult to those who have actually experienced the real deal.

Saying something over and over again doesn’t make it true.

    19. Bert Rustle — on 4th April, 2008 at 5:11 pm

MaidMarian wrote … This whole, ‘New Labour is making Britain a police state,’ line makes me very angry not only because of the lazy thought. …

In my opinion we live in a Thought Police State.

According to Yak40 at IanDale, Labour have destroyed more that’s good about Britain than just about anyone would have thought possible. Indeed Labour is malignant, not incompetent

    20. Arun — on 4th April, 2008 at 10:04 pm

What state did MaiMarian have in mind? The one where you are required to carry an identity card, your DNA is stored on a centralised database, your every movement is caught on camera, even local authorities can put you under covert surveillance and you can be detained without charge for lengthy periods of time.

There has been a huge transfer of power to the government and a fundamental change in relationship with the populace.

At the same time our politicians feather their own nests.

      All police states start somewhere.
