  • ‘The Love Guru’ and Hindus

An upcoming film in the US by Mike Myers called The Love Guru may end up annoying some Hindus, says CNN.

Myers’ character is an amalgamation of Eastern-style spiritual movements, never making reference to any particular religion. And yet the Guru Pitka — billed as “the second best guru in India” — draws a distinct picture.

He wears long hair, a long beard and a flowing caftan. “Prepare to get your enlightenment freak on,” Pitka tells visitors to his MySpace page, where he blends real information — such as the Sanskrit origins of the word “guru” — with silliness, including impossible yoga poses that would require elastic limbs. He plays sappy pop songs on the sitar. His mantra is “Mariska Hargitay.”

    Heh.

They shouldn’t complain. The Beatles did wonders for the guru trade even if the Maharishi did make them lose all faith when he tried to get jiggy with Marianna Faithful. Didn’t harm him much though. He ammassed a £2 billion fortune and died peacefully despite all the rape charges. What’s to mock?

Isn’t this more likely to annoy fans of good comedy? Recent films with the word Guru in the title have hardly set the world alight…

Now Waynes World was great (and far smarter than it was ever given credit for) and you can’t help admiring the voice of Shrek.

But Guru satire sounds like old hat – there was enough of it about at the time in the 60s and 70s (just as in the 60s, there were plenty of Bond spoofs including a Carry On Spying long before Austin Powers – although that did add its own contemporary silliness and had Mini-Me).

ps; Kismet, wasn’t it fondling Mia farrow’s sister that led to the song Sexy sadie?

ppsL I bet Marianna was smoking hot in her day as well.

Ah bollocks to that. I’ve seen a total of perhaps 5 minutes of this movie and it thankfully doesn’t look like a stereotyped bud bud bad-accented 1-dimensional joke, Myers is too smart a comedian for that. It looks funny. But I’m sure silly religious people (not suggested all religious people are silly, just the silly ones) will get their chuddies in a bunch.

However, it DOES look like a re-hash of recent Austin Powers movies with similar jokes and actors.

How many of you know that Mike Myers’s personal guru Deepak Chopra is his advisor for the film? Now that’s interesting isn’t it?

What a ripoff! He is clearly getting all the ideas from the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Look it up.

Mike, I know you love us (The Fabs), but don’t milk it dry.

What’s next then? A movie about my sheepdog Martha? A recreation of Mystery Tour? John’s Bed in? My (hoax) death? Anyways Peace Out.

      Cheers!
      Paul.
