Email and information overload

Two articles I read this weekend made me laugh, and rue at my own state. First, this piece in the Washington Post (via Gene) has one guy consume media such as TV, blogs, radio and all the rest for 24 hours. Information overload, and I can feel that pain. I’m addicted to news and information. I once stayed in an ashram in India for over a week, in the middle of nowhere. No read, no talking – just meditation. 10 hours a day. Half the time all I could think about was that another 9/11 could have happened and I’d have no clue.

And then there’s communication overload. I have 5 ‘work related’ email accounts plus other gmail accounts, and a blackberry. On top of that is Facebook, where people I don’t know keep trying to add me. Though my problems are not as bad as for Michael Arrington of Techcrunch. But for a fact there’s a ton of email I have to reply to and the list keeps getting longer every day. How I’d also like to declare ‘email bankruptcy’ and delete the entire inbox and start again. Sigh.

As we don’t have a weekend open thread at the moment, I’ll post this here.

Is this why you never respond to my e-mails whereby I send along a piece to post on PP? ;)

I’m currently having information starvation, and I am not too happy about that. It’s one thing when you’re out in the middle of nowhere AND you don’t have access to the outside world; it somehow doesn’t pain you that much. But it’s an entirely different matter when you are in the midst of civilization (well, at least during the day– past 9 PM, all of Kathmandu clears out and the dogs, cows, and rats take over) and you are acutely aware of the fact that you’re disconnected from OTHER civilizations, and it stings that much more.

No need to reply to my e-mail then- it was just a link.

If people want to send Sunny links to post on Pickled Politics then it is easy enough to send them to one of the other writers instead ( e.g. rumbold@pickledpolitics.com etc.).

    How is Nepal Desi?

  6. SalmanRush — on 24th March, 2008 at 2:08 pm

You should spend more time in the ashram.

    Rumbold:

    “How is Nepal Desi?”

Chaotic, polluted, dusty, power blackouts, water shortages, wild and crazy with a gazillion Hindu temples/shrines/statues/etc. When it rains, it seems like a long awaited relief.

I’m also suffering from a bout of…I don’t know what. Vomiting, dizziness, and fainting. Not good news, especially since I’m prone to hypochondria; I usually think I have every random disease/illness out there :)

    God, no. (No pun intended).

I also have too many e-mails.

And I’ve made the mistake of subscribing to every progressive Desi listserv that there is, and sometimes I get like 35 e-mails generated from, say, two original messages. Many, many discussions.

No change there then? Sorry to hear that you are ill.

You did? When? I never got that! (as far as I can tell). But then I have about 15 ‘junk filter’ folders so going throguh them is even more tedious. Please send it again Desi!
Yeah I used to subscribe to listservs but now I am one big listserv myself so I don’t need additional hassle.

Don – that link is brilliant! Heh

Just take a step back from it Sunny.

    It will never, ever end.

I love the screen captures on the rationalist link, especially the look on Sanal’s face throughout and his shrugged shoulders at the end as if he were comforting a disapointed little boy. It’s a lesson to us all that tantra shouldn’t be used for malicious ends like killing people, but for good ends, such as helping Sting to fuck his wife for hours.

what if you don’t want to fuck Sting’s wife for hours?

Is this post a complaint or a brag?

Seems to me, deliberately overloading oneself with so much information and communication is another form of consumerism, whereby one’s sense of worth and value is directly proportional to the ‘amount’ of demand on one’s time from both.

Worse, it sounds like an addiction. Which is no laughing matter.

Too late now, yaar. My potential posts for PP are out-of-date.

Next time I’ll send them to Rumbold. Ha ha!

Caution: Declaring email bankruptcy is like having liposuction without changing your eating habits…

ha ha, yeah thats probably better Desi. Dang.

Marsha, I think you may have a point…
