    Welcome to the weekend!

by Leon on 11th January, 2008 at 4:03 PM

Wow, I survived my first working week of 2008, amazing! It’s been a long week after such an excellent break but it’s good to be back. Stealing Clairwil’s thunder this is the weekend thread; all manner of fun, idiotic, silly and distracting things can be talked about here but NO POLITICS!.

What are you up to, still counting the cost of the Xmas spending spree or are you detoxing all the munching and drinking you did?

As is tradition [and being a gamer] here’s a YouTube that just blows me away:

Leon, this clip made me feel nostalgic. Mario Bros was my first console game two decades ago…

Thanks Leon! My week has consisted off being so ill I thought I was on the way out and laughing madly at the Terry Kelly scandal.

I’m doing the britblog round up on Sunday so if you’ve seen anything good on the blogs get it nominated.

Something humorous, especially for fans of the show “Scrubs”. Other folks needing a laugh should also enjoy this — it’s from a musical episode of the show where the 2 main characters here, Turk (black doctor) and JD (white doctor) — who are both straight — suddenly burst into song, describing their close friendship and affection for each other, whilst insisting that “they’re not gay”:

      Youtube video in full here.

“It’s like I married my best friend…..but in a totally manly way.” Freaking hilarious.

Watch the shocked and bemused reactions of the bed-ridden patient watching them too.

One of the commenters beneath the vid (“Rollefsen”) has also written down the lyrics there. Very funny stuff.

    17. leon — on 12th January, 2008 at 4:18 PM

      Yeah that’s an excellent episode!

SOmeone stop me because I am still in post Chirstmas shopping mode. I just can’t walk past the mall without buying something. I got new Jimmy Choo’s boots today.

      New Hampshire recount?
C’mon, this ain’t politics, ok it is, but most of us are only observers, so it’s really current affairs:

I don’t mind politics in the open thread, as long as it’s Politics Lite (TM). BTW Cyclone Cid, the Underground Song’s by friends of a friend, infact they played at my hospital ball. We did the same London medics-comedy-circuit type thing a few years back.

I have compiled a massive collection of Mario videos Leon, this one dates back a few years but it’s pretty awe-inspiring. Aw shucks, was gonna link some of the best ones but a lot are missing from YouTube.

Tell your friends of friends that it’s the commuter gift tonic that’s still giving

    23. leon — on 13th January, 2008 at 1:36 AM

OI! No politics (whether heavy, moderate or lite) on this thread! :P

    24. Katy Newton — on 13th January, 2008 at 1:46 AM

I just went to see Charlie Wilson’s War. I really enjoyed it, although I felt that the story was a bit inconclusive: it was more docudrama than film proper. The acting was superb, though.

In the interests of well-rounded reporting, however, I should probably add that my friend fell asleep halfway through.

    25. Nyrone — on 13th January, 2008 at 2:21 PM

I thought Philip Seymour Hoffman was superb in his role, but the end of the film should probably have spent a little longer than 1-min on the serious and obvious repercussions of sending the Afghan armies weapons for the war and doing absolutely nothing about development/reconstruction of the country…

I know it was supposed to be a gung-ho ‘jeez…aint America great’ kinda movie, but I would also have liked to see a scene in which, when Tom Hanks rode off to meet the Mujahideen, he was also seen shaking hands with and supporting Osama Bin Laden…I rekon they would probably breakout and do that dance from ‘Big’ together.. ..but who would play Mr O?

That SMB video can’t be real…can it?
Has it been engineered via ‘Game Genie’ or Action-Replay or something?

    26. El Cid — on 13th January, 2008 at 3:33 PM

Did I tell you peeps that I very recently went to Arizona? I think I may have, a couple of times.
I won’t bore you all with my general impressions but I will say one thing.
No matter how high your expectations, no matter your frame of mind, you will not be disappointed by the Grand Canyon. If you can do it one day, do so.

P.S. Has Jagdeep been bumped off a la Jay Singh?

    27. leon — on 13th January, 2008 at 3:56 PM

The Grand Canyon is on my list of places to see before I pop my cloggs, everyone I know that’s seen it says its a must.

    28. Sunny — on 13th January, 2008 at 6:41 PM

We nearly went to the Grandy Canyon this time around while I was in the States. We were planning to drive down from Vegas… but we decided to go see the Hoover Dam first. And all I can say is… don’t waste your time on that damn Dam! Its just… well… very obvious and frankly a waste of time. But we spent an hour waiting to get near it and then the whole day was gone :(

I don’t know where Jagdeep is! He’s just randomly vanished!

Did I miss the thread on Kenya?

      TFI

    30. Rohin — on 14th January, 2008 at 2:37 AM

You know…I wasn’t that amazed with the Grand Canyon and I’m generally someone awed by nature. I didn’t take a helicopter/plane which I hear is the best way to get the scale of the thing. But I did trek all the way down. Don’t get me wrong, I had an amazing day but I wouldn’t rank it way up with the most awesome natural sights I’ve seen.

Also saw Charlie Wilson’s War today. Liked it a lot and above comments agreed with. As this is the open thread, my lighter observation about the movie is thus. For all the bluster fawning fans make about Amitabh or Aishwariya being the biggest stars in Bollywood, the Puri brother have acted and held their own with Harrison Ford and now Tom Hanks in blockbuster Hollywood films. Shows acting ability is still valued somewhere.
