A few years ago? Given the news stories over the last few months, it would be probably be best to avoid Chinese goods as much as possible*

*Good luck with that. Pretty much everything seems to be made in China these days. I can't even be bothered to try.

A few years ago you wouldn’t touch anything out of China with a bargepole. Before that Korea and before that Japan. Why should we look at India any differently.
As for Clarkson and his views not everybody can own a Ferrari or whatever he loves to drive. Funny enough I read about this a few weeks ago in the Economist

A story which was prefaced months before by the same rag by this story.

Which reminds me; I received this weeks issue only yesterday. (Late) and its still in its plastic bag. Funny enough the one of the articles on the frontpage states;
“India’s technology riddle.’

expect a lot Indian companies awash with cash buying British or American firms. Maybe. Who knows with emerging markets.

Funnily enough, I mentioned this sort of thing potentially occuring at an increasing rate in my "White Mughals, Brown Brits" article last year (and which Rumbold has just provided the link to in his Mughals open thread). It's the East India Company in reverse.

"The Honourable West Europe Company", anyone ? ;)

I read that there are advisors that are strongly against this deal, saying it will damage those brands. You know, a Third World country taking over. The article finishes saying that even China would spoil it.

I must say that Tata is not well known for quality and customer service, and they have to do a hell of a job to improve it, and also do what Americans and British were unable to do.

As an aside, this year Tata managed to build the 4th fastest supercomputer, ahead of Japan and the UK.
