I have a new theory for what happened to M.I.A Pickler Jay Singh.

Behind the scenes, visible only to the gundas managing the dubious "gentlemen's establishment" The Pickled Pindoo (located just off Southall Broadway, across the road from the cash & carry and behind the petrol station), there had been an increasing amount of conflict between some members of the PP inner circle. Veiled stares, stilted conversations, the air so thick with tension you could cut it with a kirpan, that sort of thing.

Something dangerous was definitely in the air, and it wasn't just the pungent whiff of your auntie Neena's overcooked saag paneer.

One day, Jay Singh was sitting behind his laptop, writing one of his guest articles for Pickled Politics. "The Cosa Nostra and Bhupinder Uncle's Progressive Bridge Club -- A Warning for Our Times", it was called. Jay began typing, his kara occasionally clanging against the keyboard, a mug of Indian masala chai veering dangerously close to falling off the edge of the table onto the maroon shagpile carpet with all the haldi stains his guests pretended not to notice.

"It has been occurring to me recently that Sunny Hundal's progessive Asians movement, which he cryptically likes referring to as 'This Thing', is not quite what it may seem. People keep disppearing. Katy Newton, who the PP consiglieri have taken to calling 'Adriana', may not be long for this world. Something dark is afoot in the kingdom of Ealing, something rancid, something monomaniacal, something Manichean."

Jay briefly traded suspicious glances with the sinister teacher known only as "Don", as the latter entered the room and walked past Jay, out of sight.

Struggling to shake his mounting sense of foreboding, Jay sipped from his mug as his computer screen flickered and his cellphone began vibrating insistantly. Frowning, he answered the call: "Look, I can only talk for a couple of minutes, I'm just about to get cracking on my article, and you know how -- "

According to my itunes most played list, my favourite mozza tracks are, in order:

5. Sweet & tender hooligan
4. Interesting drug
3. Suedehead
2. What difference does it make?
1. You're the one for me, fatty

Weird how the one you think and say you love (There is a light that never goes out) isn't the one you actually listen to the most

Ah well, the bottle of Caol Isla has managed to just about keep me functioning this week, although its taken a terrible hammering compared to my usual nip or two a week.

I am afraid I am an unashamed iconodule at the church of St Stephen Morrissey, I have a theory that people mainly get trapped in the music of their formative periods, which explains the ridiculous amount of post-punk and indie music in my CD collection (although the vast majority purchased in the last five years has been contemporary classical!).

I once had to do an Desert Islands Discs thing for a magazine, the other four were easy, a bit of Joy Division, a touch of Shostakovich, a Blyth Power track and a smidgen of William Bragg, Esq. But I wanted a Smiths/Morrissey number and I spend hours havering between various tracks. After a very, very long ponder, I finally went for "How Soon is Now".

Feh, I'm going to have some more "medicine" and listen to early Simple Minds.

Leon: Cool, didn't realise it was as simple as that to contribute articles around here! So I just write something and submit it... somewhere? :-)

Might as well come clean about this now too... I'm actually Dave S posting under an alias, just in case (for some unknown reason) my suggestion for a thread was taken badly.

Thinking back to a few hours ago, I'm not at all sure what that reason would have been, but I thought I'd apply a little caution just in case. Glad to see encouraging responses to the idea, anyway! :-)

Sunny,

Heh, yeah I thought I'd be back before anyone noticed I'd gone.

Clairwil,

Hehe, no worries, been a rum drinker since my teens, I can handle the stuff! :D

Anne,

What do you think about you writing a short piece about your views on Anarchism? Might be a good way to get that type of discussion going...:)

Cool, so maybe a thread on it sometime? I just feel it's really quite badly misunderstood out there, but is still incredibly relevant to modern life / the modern political climate.

And with attempts by missing-in-action PP hero Kismet to turn it into "Blunt TV". Crikey, the aunties and unclejis were really p*ssed off with that short-lived attempt to push the boundaries when they stumbled across the show on Zee TV back in the 90s. Tauba tauba tauba.

Could I propose a weekend / casual thread sometime? Just as an idea I think would be interesting to have on here:

"Ask an anarchist..."

You ask, I (and maybe others) answer. Questions on anything you want, though presumably with some relevance to an anarchist's take on things.

Far from being childish and rebellious, anarchy actually strikes me as the most "grown up" political position - in terms of recognising that we must take responsibility for ourselves.

It's a position I think has some considerable merit to it (otherwise I wouldn't hold it myself), but it's also one that has many unanswered questions around it. I'd like to explore that, and maybe be left with a few questions that I can't answer yet.

Maybe give us all something to think about, and something that doesn't usually get much mainstream coverage.

What do you reckon? (And feel free to tell me to get lost!)
