Time to talk nonsense again…..

Hello,
Yes already it’s that time of the week, time to leave random comments on a thread of little consequence. It is of course the weekend open thread.

So far today I’ve been out shopping and have returned home somewhat concerned about one of the young boys in the lighting department. I can only assume some idiot manager has told him to be cheerful with the customers because the whole time he was serving me was spent making inane remarks about the weather through a false and fixed grin. I kept my answers brief and to the point, wished him a quick shift and sped away. Honestly I think they might have to drug the poor boy if they want to keep up this performance. Something ought to be done -but what?

Earlier in the week I spent a very pleasant hour being hypnotised. I can highly recommend it. I was there to stop me eating crisps and junk food and so far it’s worked like a dream. Mind you it hasn’t made me want to go to they gym but lets face it who does really? Well apart from Madonna and what good has it done her? She’s a haggard shadow of herself and married to that fool Guy Ritchie. Pah! even when I was really fat I could pull better folk than that without really trying.

I have recently taken ownership of one of those lights that cheers you up in the winter, it’s early days yet but I’ve been annoying Mr Clairwil by being chipper -the poor soul is in one of his slumps and I don’t suppose me birling about talking about performing dogs and roller skates helps much.

Right I shall leave you with Terry Wogan and David Icke chatting about old times.

Cheerio

When I watch this it makes me feel quite sorry for David Icke, to be honest. Especially the bit when Terry Wogan says “But they’re not laughing with you… they’re laughing AT you.”

Talking about going to the gym, here’s a good way to get motivated. Pru Healthcare are doing a deal whereby if you take out health insurance with them, you can join one of 3 gym chains at a massively reduced rate. The total cost works out much cheaper than just joining the gym alone…go figure.(I’ve put details of this offer on my blog).

The upside, or downside depending on your point of view, is that if you fail to go an average of x2 a week over a 3 month period you are heavily penalised. No need for hypnotism on this one…that’s incentive enough for this tight-fist to maintain a regular regime!

    “Bizarrely sunny”

You’re now naming weekends after yourself? Mon dieu.

  10. Don — on 21st October, 2007 at 3:22 pm

And a splendid weekend it has been. Took my shiny new tax-free bike out on a run up to Bellingham, calling in at couple of pubs along the way.

Bought my first shredder, having tired of tearing up my account details by hand on the 80% of my mail which consists of ‘Why aren’t you borrowing money from us? We have printed your account details at the top of this letter so if you throw it away your identity will be stolen and you will spend the rest of your life as a penniless fugitive.’

    Got another of those phone calls from my daughter at uni;

‘Dad, you like Whitman, don’t you?’
    ‘Uh, yeah. Of course.’
‘To what extent would you say he was influenced by a Blakean interpretion of Swedenborg?’
‘Well, um, clearly some mystical aspects …’
    ‘Dad, are you using wiki?’
‘No, what is this wiki of which you speak?’

    Busted.

  11. Sunny — on 21st October, 2007 at 3:32 pm

Rumbold – heh. My ego knows no bounds, as you can probably tell.

    Don – that’s hilarious!

Yeah, I bought a shredder a while back too. But then I was reading Robert Fisk’s book and he recounts how the Iranians spent months putting together thousands of shredded documents afrter they took over the American embassy… and that tells me I need something more industrial-strength. You can never be too safe.

Riz. I took advantage of that Pru Health offer when it was advertised on MSE about a year ago. I went a total of nought times. Complete waste of money! I’ve cancelled the policy now (wasn’t too bad, as a healthy non-smoking 25 year old it was only £19/month) but just to warn anyone – if you’re as chronically lazy as me, Riz’s offer is dangerous!

  14. Sunny — on 21st October, 2007 at 5:17 pm

Right about now, Riz should be playing golf, so chronically lazy like you he’s not. Heh.

By the way, just read on the news that Bobby Jindal, an Indian-American, is the new governor of Louisiana. This is of course the State where a few years ago, Klansman David Duke lost the gubernatorial race by a small margin.

    Me too.

Just when a thread is reaching a conclusion it gets shut down. You only reach a conclusion on contentious issues when all the shouting and screaming has exhausted everyone. I think we had just got there..

  18. Sunny — on 21st October, 2007 at 9:33 pm

yeah yeah… you all need closure. I don’t deny it, so do I. But as we can tell from the circular way it was going, nothing was actually being achieved. So sorry folks… let’s move on.

Ravi, yeah I heard about Jindal too. though, I’m not a fan. He reminds me of Keith Vaz.

  19. Katy Newton — on 21st October, 2007 at 10:07 pm

Oh really? You want closure? Well, I have a few things to say to you too.

Anyone who wants “closure” is free to email their comments to me. electrickatyn@googlemail.com. I look forward to you all explaining why you’ve directed 90% of your ire at me and 10% at the longstanding troll without whose blatantly antisemitic comment none of this would have happened anyway.

Perhaps you’ll all explain to me why Bikhair, who has been threatened with banning and actually banned on several occasions, wasn’t even threatened with a ban or asked to moderate her language on this occasion.

  20. Katy Newton — on 21st October, 2007 at 10:24 pm

I don’t mean to derail your thread, Clairwil, and I’m sorry, but as some people are now using it to talk about me as if I’m not here and reading the site I thought I’d give them an opportunity to say what they have to say directly to me.

  21. Refresh — on 21st October, 2007 at 11:32 pm

Sunny it was not circular. It was moving forward, slowly. I don’t think you have the patience for resolving conflict.

Worse the Tutu debate has been thrown out of the window too.

Katy, private email will not quite deal with it. It needed to have been public. I do think there was a just outcome to be had. But then I am an optimist.

    Sorry Clairwil.

  22. Sunny — on 22nd October, 2007 at 12:20 am

I look forward to you all explaining why you’ve directed 90% of your ire at me and 10% at the longstanding troll without whose blatantly antisemitic comment none of this would have happened anywa

Because you waited for someone to condemn her at a time when most people were not around, and then decided that everyone here despised Jews for continually using the Holocaust (so we’re all anti-semitic now?), and then you’re horrified at why we’re annoyed? Bikhair is like Morgoth – has a long history of stupid comments. Not that it makes it any better but calling us all anti-semitic in response is hardly going to bring you any sympathy.

  23. douglas clark — on 22nd October, 2007 at 12:22 am

Well, I think I’m due a right of reply, as my name came up more than anyones’.

And I doubt Ms Newton is going to like it…

I think my comment, which probably started this whole broughhahah, can be found here:

    bikhair aka taqiyyah,

Well, I was somewhat fooled by this:

What do they say about anti semites these days… Its not one who doesnt like Jews, its one who Jews dont like.

Given that we’d just been discussing David T, I thought there was a grain of truth in what you said, but that it certainly didn’t apply to David T.

I apologise if I read you wrong.

  24. Riz — on 22nd October, 2007 at 12:45 am

Its so true Rohin. Too may people just stop going after a while. The Pru deal is not a profitable venture for lazy asses or the other extreme; people so busy they haven’t got time for the gym. The Fitness First offer is better for people who just want a cheaper gym with no commitments. I was quoted £8.35 a month for BUPA heart and cancer cover with free off-peak gym membership. Another £10-£15 takes it up to all-hours membership. No excuses…now get out there and pump some iron…come on, pump it damn it!

Sunny Jim, you know me too well. We were out on the course today in the October sunshine..managed a tidy 33, 33, and 34 before calling it a day. This amateur golfer is loving the global warming!

  25. Clairwil — on 22nd October, 2007 at 12:51 am

Oh for the love of God! Have you all forgotten what the open thread is about?

Stop it and leave the Katy alone.

  26. douglas clark — on 22nd October, 2007 at 12:53 am

What, Katy, is wrong with that?

    Y’know, beyond a defensive shell?

I’d have thought the point of PP was to try to break out of defensive shells and make common cause. Perhaps I was wrong about that. Or perhaps it is just you that can’t see that as a useful objective.

I’d also point out that I most certainly didn’t agree with Bikhair – try reading what I said, above – and contrary to your comments elsewhere.

You have played a game, frankly, with what I have said. You have, quite delibrately misread it. And blown it up out of all proportion. You have assumed that what I have said supports Bikhair, and you are like a juggernaut, nothing that I say can deflect you.

I reiterate, had you said to me up front, ‘Douglas, your being a bit over simplistic when you said Jews, you should have said ‘some Jews’, then you would have got an instant agreement from me, and not what is now frankly becoming a vendetta.

Personally, if you care to read again what I said, I am astonished that you can honourably take the position you do. I think I’d already said what you expected of me, but you didn’t, you wanted a fight.

FYI, the reason I chucked Harrys Place was because they were all so smart they were going to get themselves killed through assuming that brains equals survival. There is absolutely no benefit in being right if the outcome is your own demise, now, is there?

Anyway, DK is clever, witty and allegedly beautiful, is he not? Perhaps. But he is also a climate change denier and a sweary wee tit.

You make your bed, you lie on it.

And contrary to what you think, I actually have a great deal of respect for you. It is a shame it is not reciprocated, but there you go.

  27. Sunny — on 22nd October, 2007 at 12:55 am

managed a tidy 33, 33, and 34 before calling it a day. This amateur golfer is loving the global warming!

Nice one mate. I’m around next weekend! I want to crack that 30-mark. Come down to Ealing!

  28. douglas clark — on 22nd October, 2007 at 1:00 am

    Clairwil,

I had deliberately left this alone for 24 hours or so. It is not me that raised it on the Weekend Open Thread, I think you’d be forced to agree.

And I am frankly defending myself against what I see as a ridiculous attack.

If you or Sunny want to delete the entire correspondence, both here and on the Desmond Tutu thread, I’d have no objection whatsoever.

But, I won’t forget it, and I’d be astonished if Katy Newton did either.

    I will not be bullied.

  29. Ravi Naik — on 22nd October, 2007 at 1:35 am

Because you waited for someone to condemn her at a time when most people were not around

I think that is a lame excuse. Not around? Most of us know Bikhair and her extremely limited and distorted view of the world – I don’t really care what she writes, and I suspect I am not the only one. Which is the reason she is usually ignored.

And I am surprised, Katy, that someone as smart and insightful as you is asking why 90% of of the ire is directed at you, when you are equating ignoring trolls like Bikhair as supporting anti-semites or harbouring anti-semitic views.

  30. Rohin — on 22nd October, 2007 at 1:59 am

I’m not much of a golfer. 33, 33, 34? Are you referring to a half course? 33′s fantastic! But I feel you’re not as Sunny says he wants to crack the 30 mark, so it can’t be.

Riz, did I say I was lazy? I meant I’m your second category, yes yes too busy to be at the gym. THAT’S what I meant. You know, I might get a personal trainer. That’s one way I may finally do something. I’m fit – don’t get me wrong there, got my resting pulse down to 50 with all my cycling – but I’ve lost weight and I’m too skinny. Need to pump some weights. Or inject that oil into my muscles. Or take loads of drugs.

I’m planning another sports thread, but I have to get to bed and wake up early to fit the new saddle. The thread will be posted tomorrow.

People see the other F1 news?

(are you proud of me Clair, keeping the thread about fluff?)

  31. Sunny — on 22nd October, 2007 at 2:35 am

We play at a pitch and putt, not a regular 9-hole, so unfortunately it is sadder than you envisaged. Although Riz has a mean swing and I can play a full 18 holes quite easily (though it’s been years).

30 on a par 27 should be do-able (he says, optimistically).

  32. Refresh — on 22nd October, 2007 at 3:14 am

    Douglas,

“If you or Sunny want to delete the entire correspondence, both here and on the Desmond Tutu thread, I’d have no objection whatsoever.”

Irony is fast becoming my favourite word. The whole dialogue captured the issues perfectly – from Sunny’s header to the last post, and some.

How do you frame and hang a PP thread?

  33. Rumbold — on 22nd October, 2007 at 10:01 am

I just have this image of a room. In it there is a massive fight going on between various regulars- chairs flying and suchlike. Occupying one table, and blissfully unaware of the whole thing are three Brits dressed in golf clothes and talking about the 14th hole, as bottles fly past their head.

  34. Riz — on 22nd October, 2007 at 11:11 am

That’s the thing about golf…nothing else matters. We never talk politics on a golf course…it’s poor form don’t you know, a what, what, what. Decisions concerning company take-overs, flotations, international expansions, and other business matters are conducted between holes in a quiet whisper, never interfering with the game. And this is just on a par 3 pitch n putt!

Rohin, looking forward to the sports thread. Hey, cycling is excellent cardio, but as you say, might be good to supplement with some bone stregthening and muscle building exercises…perhaps get off your bike every time you see something reasonably heavy that can be lifted (eg: (large dogs, small people) and give 10 reps. Another way of building up the muscles is to take a bit of creatine. This gives more strength but it also makes the muscles hold on to more water so you get bulked up pretty quick. Of course, stop taking it and the water mass disappears..but keep taking it and you make end up as a Creatine based Frankenstein! Bah.

Sunny Jim, I hear these calls for Ealing but it’s going to take certain folks some 2 hours to drive there. Let’s see, if these people don’t want some action next week we can pile it in. Otherwise, Stanmore it is, or indeed another excellent Par 3 course in Hendon, but this is even further north!

ps – he who cracks 30 shall be worshipped as a minor god!

You think that’s cringeworthy? Wait till the guy from Kingfisher holds his press conference. He’ll have a 100 scantily clad women just for show. The man is the king of cringe.

I don’t know what your P&P looks like Riz/Sunny, but Palewell Pitch & Putt, my local course, has seen a demon 26 by me. There I was thinking you two were Tigers!

I cannot play proper golf to save my life. Wii golf on the other hand…

  43. Clairwil — on 22nd October, 2007 at 10:49 pm

Three cheers for the golfers! Thanks for keeping it light chaps even though I don’t have the faintest idea what you’re on about.

  44. Sunny — on 22nd October, 2007 at 11:21 pm

26! Did you see that Riz?

Rohin’s thrown down a gauntlet and said that the milk we drink isn’t from real cows (well, I mostly drink soya but that’s not the point) and that compared to the Bengalis everyone else are wimps if we can’t beat that score. I think it’s a challenge to be honest.

It’s about time we took out our drivers….. and beat him over the head with them.

  45. Riz — on 24th October, 2007 at 1:29 am

Sunny, I see a good PP golf competition in the making!

But a round of 26? That’s below par dammit…jeez, I may as well throw in my golfer’s hat and burn my collection of diamond pattern socks. And to think, here I was happily ecstatic that I just today went around on a tough par 3 course in 30…bah.

Riz swings at Rohin’s head with a driver a misses, as he always does with this club.
