"shrewd political strategy"

Hole-in-one Leon, and a great summarization of these awkward, irritable feelings I've been having about this sudden psuedo-shift to the left by Brown and his minions.

I absolutely don't buy it, or trust him either, and feel it's a politically concevied gameplan to temporarily appease the critical majority (Do they think we are a nation of chronic Amnesiacs? Shit, they got us down cold!) who will be satisfied with a few arbitrary crumbs thrown out as ann attempt to put the conservatives out of business for a few terms and reign over us as galactic overlords as per usual.

Newmania, I'm afraid I've also got no idea what you are talking about. Is this the handiwork of one of those fancy political random-word generators?

You're such a cynical lot, heh. It's not perfect but it's a move in the right direction.

Newmania I have no idea what you're on about.

I've seen McNulty's comments blogged elsewhere and it seems nobody got to the end of that BBC report:

"Mr McNulty spoke out just a day after Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said the time was right to reconsider extending the 28-day limit on holding terrorism suspects without charge.

"She told delegates that prevention of terrorism outweighed any potential damage to community relations. But Ms Smith ruled out extending the controversial period to 90 days."

Tony's the velvet glove to Jacqui's iron fist.

I `m addressing the subtext of your quotation here but I take it your are suggesting there us a concern for civil Liberty and sensitivity to um...ethnic minority communities in Brown`s reich

I imagine you chaps look at this sort of thing pretty carefully but you must have noticed the progress the BNP have made one of the unnoticed aspects of the Ealing nightmare. If this was repeated across the country it represents a direct threat to the Labour Party whose voters are the chief source of mew votes( For 35% of Labour voters the BNP is the second choice ICM). Conservatives naturally never have anything to do with them
The threat has been made with covert racism . Enver Hodge saying the 'darkies' are getting a leg up the housing ladder in Barking and Little Hazel moaning about the community changing 'out of all recognition '.New Statesman today noted that Brown`s pitch has gone right into outright xenophobia "..The subtext was . I `ll help you hardy Brits fend off those dastardly foreigners with the chill economic winds drugs and so on...". British jobs for the British.
This is what we would call , "National Socialism", although despite stoking up resentment especially of Muslims little will be done on immigration or coastal policing or indeed on draining the force from Islamic Theocratic fascism in our midst . I say sensible controls on the rate of change and bulwarking the indigenous culture allow a Liberal free society. Brown talks tough stirs up hatred but is to in hock to big business to turn off the cheap Labour supply. Then he requires 90 days detention and additional state powers to keep a lid on it . Good Lord you have had to look hard to see a chink of light haven’t you. The thrust of Brownism is in the other direction. Yes they have taked up the terror threat deliberately in much the way Hitler talked up Krystal Nacht , ( Godwin for me again)and they have justified national DNA bases multiplying reason for the state to enter you home and endless coercive measures you must be aware of

It is commonly acknowledges that short of tazers for delegates this is the most tightly controlled conference ever following the further control of the Unions mirroring similar moves by Blair years ago ..If you are seriously going ton try and claim a Libertarian agenda for Brown you are `avin a larf. In speech that mentioned Britain 80 times and his own Grupen fuhrer credentials as often there was not one mention of the encroachment on Liberty of the last ten years . True the realitively Liberal Blair agenda is out of the window and fledgling attempted to introduce the market in social provision have been quietly dropped in the NHS just as academies have been dropped in all but name ( typical).
Ian Martin in the Telegraph( whose Party Brown and entourage attended) has remarked on eery absence of dissent as wannabees fight to obtain the order of the Brown Nose. Read the speech carefully and you will see that it is all about micro management from Whitehall which Brown considers to have failed only because Blair would not see it through. Terrifying. This is where real Liberty is and it is leeching away.

With Brown committed to spending (independent estimates say £20 billion....he says £5 billion) on the hated ID card scheme and the country the most observed in the world , the Liberty agenda is lost utterly to this life hating night creature with his pig in lipstick Gieves and Hawkes suits.
How can you continue to support a Party whose attitude to Liberality is contempt and who are already planning to replace democracy with PR hocus pocus and “Juries” organised by his pet Polling company...( possessors of vast NHS contracts ) .What the hell has happened to the collective mind of the left as they march like dead eyed zombies behind the most illiberal government this country has ever seen. Norman Tebbit `s support of Brown reminds me how many people here would fail “ The cricket test “ odd bedfellows are you not and yet you do not ask why. I `m not sure you aren’t failing the more important “Independent thinking “ test.

I wonder what he thinks about the Home Office plan to extend the detention period of 28 days?

I'm not sure I buy this latest utterance from him. I think we're seeing the unfolding of a shrewd political strategy; ministers allowed to speak their minds (within limits) and sound vaguely progressive while Brown attempts to look Blue and Thatcherite.

It's a pincer move designed to keep people like us on side while grabbing whatever is left of the Tories support.

They're trying to have their electoral cake and eat it if you ask me.
