OK, well first off I find these pretty funny, and I am Muslim. They are funny, and should be understood as simply a joke that incorporates aspects of religion and culture. It should not imply that Muslims should "use" these pick up lines. Obviously thats a bit ridiculous, and I don't believe that is implied at all. These are just jokes.

That being said, if it does offend someone, as a Muslim, it should be a duty to clarify the intention and express some type of apology. As it was certainly not your intention to harm anyone, you should explain that and apologize for doing so. Things we do may hurt people, but saying simply that we didn't mean to, so its ok isn't enough. There should be some expression of remorse for inflicting harm, regardless of whether or not you believe anyone should be offended. Thats simply my opinion, and I believe it to be the most Islamic course of action.

Also, there is certainly a difference between religious jokes and cultural/ethnic jokes. Providing the jokes are not in any manner viscious, cultural/ethnic jokes are ok, and laughing is good. Smiling is a mercy in Islam. Religious jokes, however, do show a great degree of disrespect to followers of religion. Making jokes about the doctrines or basic beliefs of Islam, Hindiusm, Sikhism, etc. should not be tolerated. And so far all the jokes mentioned "about" Sikhism were cultural rather than religious.

I strongly disagree with fotzepolitic's comments/opinions mentioned in #39. Making fun of religions is rather inappropriate, just because you don't believe in a specific religion, doesn't mean that it is fine to ridicule the beliefs of those that base their lives on those beliefs. It is inappropriate to mock religions. It is even inappropriate to mock the beliefs of athiests or agnostics. We can disagree, but mocking beliefs that govern the lives of others is disrespectful. Some may think that being disrespectful is fine. Well thats up to you, but I don't think that being offended by jokes about religion is wrong or outrageous, which seems to be the general sentiment.

Also, I would be pretty offended by a Monty Python movie "The Life of Muhammad" (saw). I don't think I'm the only one...

Oh, and by the way, this is awesome:

"Would you like to help me wake up for fajr?" *wink* *wink* Vhat you say baby??

Also #1 is nice...girls find it cute....yeah I gotta steal that one.

Someone asked whether all Muslims find it funny? Well increase your counter by one and I can pretty much say, most of my friends will find it funny too. I admit compared to other religions, Muslims have more jamaals..and this needs to change. I agree with Al-Hack there is a difference in these harmless jokes and the ones reeking of racism or cheapshots at stereotypes.
Infact, looking at the current Islamophobic scenario..I'd go as far as to say that it's required of the Muslim community that there is more interaction with other communities and humour definitely ranks high up on the list of things to achieve that.
If Muslims around the world want to educate the Islamophobes...that not all of us are jehadis with a bomb around our belts..then I think having more standup comedians will go a long way in doing that. Imagine what a Muslim version of Seinfeld could do towards that end.

Too sad such a funny thread got diverted into religion. I came here (via SM) to comment that I found it quite hilarious. Keep it up Al-Hack. I am digging it.

I don't have a problem with the pick up lines (indeed some of them are very funny) but I don't think anyone has or should have carte blanche to make jokes about whatever they want to without considering the offence it may cause. Case in point is #45 which in my opinion is just offensive and has racist overtones.

Not really Jamal. This is not a joke about the religion, it is using cultural and religious aspects to say something funny. Making a joke about the Prophet (pbuh) and other aspects would be offensive, but not this.

Plus, I really do not agree that just because some find it offensive, then it should be deleted. Why should certain people get to dictate what others see? If you find it offensive, don't look at it.

As long as these jokes dont slander and mock the religion its ok. whether "some" Muslims are ok with it is irrelevant. If "some" Muslims have said its offensive you should delete it. Particularly since you have a policy about this, or does it only refer to non-muslims (cough.. Islamaphobia). Some blacks and asians like being called nigger and paki, doesnt mean we should call it to all, not without fear of arrest anyway!

This is offensive to Muslims and islam. It may be a "joke" but Islam does not tell us to make jokes about our religion, which actually tells us not to mix with those that riducule Islam. So all you Muslims here saying its ok.... youre wrong.

6:68. When thou seest men engaged in vain discourse about Our signs, turn away from them unless they turn to a different theme. If Satan ever makes thee forget, then after recollection, sit not thou in the company of those who do wrong.

9:65-66. If thou dost question them, they declare (with emphasis): "We were only talking idly and in play." Say: "Was it at Allah, and His Signs, and His Messenger, that ye were mocking?" Make ye no excuses: ye have rejected Faith after ye had accepted it. If We pardon some of you, We will punish others amongst you, for that they are in sin.

31:6. But there are, among men, those who purchase idle tales, without knowledge (or meaning), to mislead (men) from the Path of Allah and throw ridicule (on the Path): for such there will be a Humiliating Penalty.

A Sikh gentleman boards a British airways plane. Once in the cabin, he proceeds to take off his shoes and socks, bundles up in a blanket and proceeds to bed down for the long haul.
The stewardess walks by and smiling pleasantly, asks:
"Relaxing?"
He replies: "No madam, Ranjeet Singh"

The way I see it, religion and race are not really things to joke about.

You can't help your race. You CAN help what silly things you believe in. If you can't make fun of what someone rationally, as an educated adult, chooses to think, what's left? You'd point and laugh if one of your colleagues still believed in the Tooth Fairy, wouldn't you? Or followed the BNP, or believed everything they read in the tabloids?

Personally, I have no respect for people who want to literally follow human-written words written hundreds or thousands of years ago, and apply backwards thinking to a modern age. Wishing and hoping that "there's something out there bigger than us" is probably part of the human condition, but using some multiply-translated, orally transmitted old book as the end-all, be-all of contemporary rules and law is just silly and deserves ridicule. I'm with Rohin -- too much pussyfooting around religion and not enough critical thinking and debate. Or comedy. :)

You can’t help your race. You CAN help what silly things you believe in. If you can’t make fun of what someone rationally, as an educated adult, chooses to think, what’s left? You’d point and laugh if one of your colleagues still believed in the Tooth Fairy, wouldn’t you? Or followed the BNP, or believed everything they read in the tabloids?

Personally, I have no respect for people who want to literally follow human-written words written hundreds or thousands of years ago, and apply backwards thinking to a modern age. Wishing and hoping that “there’s something out there bigger than us” is probably part of the human condition, but using some multiply-translated, orally transmitted old book as the end-all, be-all of contemporary rules and law is just silly and deserves ridicule. I’m with Rohin — too much pussyfooting around religion and not enough critical thinking and debate. Or comedy.

Oh yes, if that post was worded “Hindu’s and Sikhs, with their thousand Homebase Gods” it would been so acutely funny - incorporating as it would've clever social observation, religious irreverence and a wicked wit - anyone would have forgiven the conservative, tight-arsed and pious comments before and after.

But fascists rarely have any sense of humour – isn’t Bal Thackeray a failed political cartoonist?

Coruja it's actually part of B&Q policy that all branches throughout the country have a mostly Asian staff. My local Chiswick branch is exclusively Indian - as in, FOBtastic. My local Homebase is all British Asian. B&Q staff are far friendlier.

This is completely off topic. Back to religious jokes - as I said above, I think they're vital. I don't think ANY subject is out of bounds for humour, but then again I am a very twisted young chap.
