Why the different approach by the police?

As I reported on Libcon earlier, the police raised or arrested several activists who were planning peaceful protests today for the Royal Wedding. These weren’t massive events either – maybe about 5 people big. The squats weren’t even planning anything.

But to summarise, some people who were planning not to tow the official line on the Royal wedding got pre-emptively arrested despite not even planning any crime.

Now compare that to the hands-off reception that Muslims Against Crusades get. When they planned a protest, they were refused by the police, but allowed to have the protest elsewhere. At the last minute, MAC cancelled all their stunts – but faced zero police harassment. Zero.

Now I’m not saying they should necessarily face harassment for planning a peaceful, protest. I’m just asking why the police consistently treat Anjem Chouhary and his boys with kid gloves while harassing and intimidating peaceful anti-capitalist or environmental protesters?

    Why do you think?

In any case, anarchists and greens do have more of a reputation for invasive stunts, while MAC have the ability to simply stand around and be offensive.

  2. Fubar Saunders — on 29th April, 2011 at 12:55 pm

    Simple.

Had MAC tried anything anywhere near the area, the crowd would have lynched them. Past behaviour has shown that regardless of how offensive their ranting may be to most of us, thats all it largely is… ranting. They’d have needed the cops to stop them getting the s**t beat out of them.

The self-loathing middle class tory parented spotty youth “anarchist” SWP tw@ts on the other hand have been known to let things get out of hand. If you talk the talk and beat your chest about how you’re going to disrupt a day when 2 billion people are watching, then you can hardly be surprised when the door of the house you’re squatting in illegally gets kicked in at four in the morning. No sympathy whatsoever for those concerned. Count themselves lucky they didnt get tasered.

    Big boys rules…

The media/police need the MAC to use as Islamophobic bait.

    Sunny,

Is it safe to come out from under my stone yet?

    We live in strange times.

Dave Bones pointed out that MAC and he and I were running away from the prospect of violence, for altogether different reasons, but the objective was the same.

To have as little to do with this exposition of power, as in an iron hand in an velvet glove which tells you who is boss and who is not.

This is one of the pinnacles of English pageantry, a fairly desperate echo back to Elizabeth 1 and her entry to London.

You asked us all what we did? I tried to avoid it.

(Oh fuck! There aren’t going to be repeats, are there?)

    How about you?

Why the different approach by the police?

Oh, I don’t know – perhaps something like: if the police always reacted the same way, regardless of the people involved, it would make them fairly useless as a police force?

  8. damon — on 29th April, 2011 at 9:41 pm

Arresting the guy was way too much, but he is a rather annoying attention seeker.

When people misbehave on demonstrations too often, there’s bound to be some blowback reaction from the police. It might be an overreaction, but anarchist types do have a poor history of being disruptive and a pain in the backside.
The police are not very good at being flexible enough to have the fine-honed judgement that this website and Liberal Conspiracy seem to demand.

As for Anjem and his mates. Perhaps the police guessed they would never show.

    damon @ 7,

When did they take your brain out? I think we ought to be told.

It ain’t no misbehaving to demonstrate.

  10. damon — on 30th April, 2011 at 12:04 pm

It ain’t no misbehaving to demonstrate

It depends what you do really. The police probably had an idea they might disrupt the wedding.

The six were arrested in the past week in connection with alleged public order offences they are said to have committed at the TUC march last month.

So it’s the same as stopping football fans going to matches or leaving the country.
Pretty draconian – but personally, I don’t care that much.

haha is political correctness gone mad!

I would say if I were white. Ang on.. I am white.

Seriously- Anjum is actually very clever how he plays this and those who wanted to protest the royal wedding aren’t?

Well not entirely correct either. If I was skint and had nothing to do with my life I might have dressed up as a zombie the other day and picked up my seven and a half grand out of court in a few years. Its sort of like a Metropolitan Police trust fund. If they can’t fund protest covertly they cough up after the event and don’t seem to care.

    MAC/AL-Muj/Islam4UK is different shaped banana.

Anjum does his usual tactic, he pretends there is going to be a protest till the media reports it, then announces a cancellation on his website, job done. People like your posse or the EDL turn up to protest him and find him not there? Even better.

Anarchists/anti-monarchists etc.. The Police have had the same tactic which they have been allowed to get away with by everyone since time immemorial, with the death of Ian Tomlinson being the only notable blip. Because they have been allowed to get away with basically fantasising their fantasies have gone stratospheric. I don’t bother protesting anymore, but it is immensely funny. You have to keep reminding yourself they are the ones who DON’T take the drugs..

I think all those Love Police come across as a bit smug but they do dance very interestingly on the border of free speech, and authority taking them seriously make themselves look remarkably stupid.

I thought everything was relaxing these days. When you compare it to the Sex Pistols getting away with this you wonder what is missing eh. England is going back to the 1970s.

I just think it is all hilarious but I’m glad I wasn’t arrested on my cycle thru London.

The only sane coverage of the royal wedding I saw was on RT. Did you catch it? Very sane, very funny.
