It doesn’t matter if its Alan Bond, Robert Maxwell or Conrad Black. It’s always the money.
Media tycoon Conrad Black has been convicted of three charges of fraud and one of obstructing justice by a jury in Chicago…
…The charges on which he was found guilty carry a maximum penalty of 35 years in prison.
There probably aren’t very many journalists saddened by this event; infact if you listen carefully you can hear the champaign corks in certain offices. Whatever his actual sentence its an almighty fall from grace. What do you reckon the chances are of him getting a ‘Scooter Libby’?

Black and his wife Barbara Amiel were not entirely nice to those less fortunate. Black and Amiel has particular venom for the Palestinains and now those they held as friends are deserting them. Rich justice!!!
If Bush pardons him then it is a mistake.
I wonder if Amiel will now stand by him?
I think the Jewish community is wise to keep it’s distance.
BTW It is interesting to note that the neo-con artists who talk continually of stopping fraud also always appear near the centre of trials involving fraud, witholding evidence etc.
In this case Richard Pearle, once accused of spying for Israel. Non-Executive Director of Hollinger and supposedly there to ensure things were correct.
Strange how all this fraud went on under his nose. I guess he was tucking into the lavish meals paid for by Hollinger!
Stange the number of these neo-con artists who are around or involved in criminal activity and all this whilst they tell everyone else about fraud.

I am sure that like Maxwell the Labour Friends of Israel and the Friends of Isreal in the UK Parliament will stand by their own! Sure they will pay his fines after all the print and writing he did for them and turning reporting into the conflict into a one sided Pro-Israel affair as his journalists complained about. Now let us see how they help their own in times of trouble or will they ditch him?
He won’t drown like Maxwell so he’ll have plenty of time in jail to reflect how those he pandered have deserted him.
Wonder if Maggie “I Love Dodgy Men” Thatcher will visit him in jail like she did with her ole mate Pinoche.
Ah well at least Barbara will live well!

Only one article on Black, no comment on the Haaretz story of lack of freedom of religion in Israel, no story on the Guardian report of the refusal by Iranain Jews that thye don’t want to emigrate despite being offered 30K to do so. No comment on whether Lady Black deserves to keep her title.

My thread has been molested, but it doesn’t matter. I was serious about the possibility of getting a pardon from Bush when he leaves the White House. The Conrad Black story wasn’t that big in the US AFAIK; it was fairly significant in Canada and the UK but he was more or less another unknown fraudulent tycoon to the average american. It wouldn’t be that controversial a decision to give him a ‘less excessive’ sentence.
On the Scooter Libby sentence intervention, its pretty much the reason people around the world roll their eyes when the US lectures the developing world about political corruption and sleaze.
Chairwoman – yes he wasn’t Jewish. However he supported the Israeli cause – staunchly. Aided and abetted by his wife, many leading Journalists complained abotu his influencing news stories to put a Pro-Israeli bias on them. This from right wing press and jounalists is saying something.
I think many of the leading Pro-Israeli Groups need to be more careful about the friendships they make in future as longer term friendships like those with Black, Maxwell, Murdoch etc. are harming them significantly. Again the closeness to Bush and Blair causes great harm. I always find it strange when they do this. It may be short term influence but it comes with great long term harm. In addition this fuels the Jews control the Media nonsense. They just need to be more selective.
Kulvinder – I doubt Bush will pardon Black. He has no reason to as he was never part of his inner circle. With Libby he shouldn’t have commuted the sentence but he did. Doing much more will damage his legacy.
Commuting Black’s sentence would send out the wrong signal. In any case I would think Jack the Financier would be a more likely candidate for a pardon.
What I found distasteful was that the Daily Telegraph plastered the conviction all over its front page. Obviously they had to report it, but they could have restricted it to the inside pages; it was hardly the most important news in the world.
He might have been a crook, but the Telegraph was better under his control- and the new owners, the Barclay Brothers, are hardly saints. There are plenty of journalists who happily took his money now lining up to kick him when he is down.
It doubt that he will get a pardon.
I don’t really see the problem with the Telegraph’s take on it. It was – is – a major news story. They press dealt with Maxwell and Bond in a similar way. The media in Britain has always been distasteful; even when the Telegraph was under Black.
There was something repellent about The Times’s glee as well. Black may be a crook, but Murdoch has done much more harm to the polity of several countries. Thathe fixed the laws so that he did it legally is another thing.
