KSingh

Maybe you have a point in regards to issue raised in 21.

My folks have just brought the Punjab Times paper, both Sharma and Rai have pretty good ads in there listing there goals and vision. Lit's one is comical, it just says;
"Cameron is supporting Lit for the Southall election".

Who else would Cameron support-doh!
Plus it is in a Punjabi newspaper but the ad has no Punjabi at all. What a numpty.

Below is an article from today's Guardian about the UK Govt. trying to reverse the judgment in the case of Karamjit Singh Chahal.

Chahal was a friend and close associate of no other than Dr Rai who was heavily involved in the original case in Strasbourg from an Sikh Human Rights Group (SHRG) and ISYF perspective. He should go back to defending the Chahal decision and stop wasting his time in politics - people in Southall suggest he will lose his deposit and will be lucky if he picks up a thousand votes.

But then again he wants to show he has changed his colours - he regularly travels to India (incidentally after the ISYF ban) and is one of the two Sikh advisers to the UK Govt. All very strange considering his past activities. Rest assured he will be staying clear of challenging the UK/Indian Govts. (he needs to keep them pleased as they provide him funds/freedoms) in the Chahal case.

UK challenges Strasbourg ban

Clare Dyer and Alan Travis
Thursday July 12, 2007
The Guardian

Britain launched an attempt at the European court of human rights yesterday to overturn an 11-year-old judgment by the court which bans the deportation of suspected terrorists to countries where they face a risk of torture or degrading treatment.

The government has been trying for two years to find a way of challenging the Strasbourg court's judgment in the 1996 Chahal case, which has frustrated its attempts to expel suspects to such countries as Tunisia and Algeria.

It was given permission to intervene in a case brought against the Netherlands by Mohammed Ramzy, a 22-year-old Algerian terror suspect, but that case has been held up by procedural delays.

However, yesterday the court's grand chamber of 17 judges heard Britain's arguments when it intervened in another case, brought against the Italian government by Nassim Saadi, 23, a suspected terrorist and brother of a suicide bomber. He was convicted of criminal conspiracy in Italy and given a 20-year sentence by a Tunisian military court in his absence for belonging to a terrorist organisation abroad and incitement to terrorism.

Italy obtained diplomatic assurances from Tunisia that he would not be tortured and could reopen the criminal case against him, but his lawyer, Sandro Clementi, told the court yesterday that it had strong evidence that torture was "a daily practice" in Tunisia.

Britain hopes to persuade the court to reconsider its judgment in the case of Karamjit Singh Chahal, a Sikh militant who successfully argued that he should not be sent back to India because he would face a real risk of inhumane treatment.

Jagdeep
I am already a paid and fully subscribed member of AI. I just think that Khalistanis are stereotyped, without the issue being debated on the strength of argument or potential, via petty name calling and scaremongering (i.e. extremist, fanatics). In regards to your point regarding ethnic cleansing; I think the Indian government is the guilty party to blame on that one. Anyhow clearly we are coming from very different perspectives on this so nor will I bother to press on.

Its great this election so many people have heard how Sikhs have suffered in India and a lot of senior politicians have become aware of this.Labour Ministers have dropped the Asian thing and are talking 'Southall's Great Sikh community'. All the anti Sikh mafia are growing desperate by the hour.

The Sikhs had an independent state until 1849 until the British annexed, why should it not be restored? Why is a Bristish colonial model of India defended by these so called anti colonialists. In fact their wer 500 independent states in the Indian sub continent before Britain arrived.Of course the self haters are not aware of this as in there Stalanist, bigotted world.

Well it's quite easy Neet --- support Human Rights through agencies like Amnesty and HRW. What does Self determination on the basis of a theocratic megalomania in a land in which there is no desire for a theocratic state which is predicated on ethnic separatism in a land wracked by issues with nothing to do with the dreams of preserving a pristine form of religion through a hyper nationalism have to do with Human Rights? Human Rights now are about poverty stricken farmer, oppressed women, Dalits being raped and brutalised by Jatt landlords, babies being aborted on a gender basis. Don't be sold the puppy by the ideologues that a magic wand of ethnic cleansing nationalism will solve all this.

And by the way, you are either incredibly naive or disingenuous if you're expressing surprise at my characterisation of Khalistanis as being riddled with theocrats, extremists, bigots and fanatics. That's what I mean by a very high tolerance level for extremism --- you just don't see it.

Anyway, I can't be bothered wasting typing time discussing pipedreams and cheese and onion crisps nationalism.

Jagdeep I guess your right; you are meeting the wrong Khalistanis.

You say that it is one thing to support human rights in Punjab but quite another to support Khalistan... so how else can a person (i.e. me!) actively support human rights issues in Punjab without the need for self-determination?

Really Neet? I must be meeting the wrong Khalistanis. Almost every single one of them I've spoken to and known, after scratching the surface is a far right ring bitter and twisted bigot with a very high tolerance for extremist thought and rhetoric, and majorly into demonisation of Hindus and Muslims and dissenting Sikhs. Its one thing to support Human Rights in Punjab, and quite another to cleave to a dark ideology predicated on narrow backwards theocracy.

Either way, this by election has really dredged them up from the surface, and shown them for what they are. Which is good.

Easy there Jagdeep, since when did self-determination translate into 'slobbering and spluttering bigots'. Most Khalistanis have issues with the Indian government and not the general public of India. Aside from that your quite right about the Tories not giving a flying f**k about these kind of issues.

More Khalistani Muslims and Hindus are joining the Tories today.

This is hilarious! Have you take your tablets lately? Last time I checked, the friendly local neighbourhood Khalistanis were wetting their pants with their hatred for Hindus and Muslims, the slobbering and spluttering bigots. I'm so glad those fanatics have run away from the Labour party --- straight to the Tories, as if they could give a flying burp for any of that stuff.

KSingh
Are you serious? What makes you think that a right wing party such as the Tories are going to want to assist with tackling human rights violations? I think it is naive to think the Tories want anything apart form your vote. Look at how Cameron tries to seem all-inclusive and presents a 'so-called' changed party, while the rest of his party are happy to put on a facade but deep down still the same. Look at the grammar school fiasco. Wake up the Tories never changed.

The under represented massess are making their mark , they are fed up with Indian pseudo communists being imposed on them. More Khalistani Muslims and Hindus are joining the Tories today.Sikh issues such as human rights, discrimination against religious Sikhs which were always attcked by India's agents as being fanatical and terrorist are being discussed openly for the first time.
