Note that this individual’s views were captured by Press TV, a channel that is run by a brutal regime. They seem kindred spirits.

    James Lock @ 1,

Probably not. I don’t know about you, but I completely hate these arseholes.

  3. earwicga — on 23rd March, 2011 at 10:34 pm

I fail to see why you have labeled this as ‘humour’ Rumbold.

He’s been told something is happening and he finds that outrageous. As would I if it were true.

Why is it that he doesn’t have access to what is true? I’m not laughing.

  4. leroy — on 23rd March, 2011 at 11:33 pm

Well he seams to have spent most of his time trying to find the truth in a bottle.

  5. Carl — on 24th March, 2011 at 12:23 am

You laugh, he was the chap who decided that the EDL should have a LGBT society – PressTV simply caught him on a bad day.

  6. Kisan — on 24th March, 2011 at 5:37 am

The guy is a pissed racist knucklehead who can’t form a coherent sentence.

When will Press TV interview anti-regime protesters in Tehran?
Never as protesting is illegal and protesters get beaten, arrested, tortured and killed.

Like some others I thought he said ‘Muslamic ray guns’ at first.

  10. Rumbold — on 24th March, 2011 at 8:29 am

That’s what I thought too Sarah.

    Earwiga:

Because it is funny. ‘Muslim ray guns’ indeed.

    Perhaps you’d prefer this version.

    Oh, that’s absolutely brilliant.

  12. mangles — on 24th March, 2011 at 10:37 am

I confer with Earwicga – I had an initial reaction of humour to his response followed by a feeling of resentment that this persons ignorance is being ridiculed rather than he being educated. Laughing at him and his like will only alienate them further, leaving them more disengaged and fodder for the next incarnation of NF, BNP, EDL …..

    Rab rakha!

I don’t see why both can’t be done- laugh, then educate.

I definitely prefer that other version – its got to be a hit.

WRT to the interviewee, I don’t believe he should be ridiculed. He in need of real friends.

    Rumbold,

You intrigued me with your caption

‘Note that this individual’s views were captured by Press TV, a channel that is run by a brutal regime. They seem kindred spirits.’

Were you worried that HP might at some future date come gunning for you and label you pro-Iranian and therefore anti-semitic, with that in their back pocket as solid evidence?

    Why else add the caption?

this guy actually believes in iraqi laws for britian what the hell and i doubt he is alone.

As for the cheap shot at presstv i rather watch alternative view of a story from different sources, rather than having one choice of the the brainwashed propaganda of skynews and bbc pumped every hour 24/7 into our homes!

  18. Sarah AB — on 25th March, 2011 at 6:46 am

    @joe 90

I have some concerns about BBC bias too (possibly not the same ones you do)

    But – Press TV?

As someone who is pro-Iranian, but anti the regime, I don’t really mind what HP thinks. Why I put that in is because some people won’t know about Press TV’s funding and slant.

  20. Refresh — on 25th March, 2011 at 9:30 am

    Rumbold,

I could understand that if the interview itself wasn’t completely free-standing except for the ident.

    Sarah AB,

We had Ehud Barak interviewed on Newsnight (BBC) and I sat there thinking he might be asked about a prospective no-fly zone over Israel and occupied Palestine, but no he was invited to welcome the intervention in Libya. Which he obviously did, and wished for a similar one in Iran. And not a single question regarding his own brutality.

Sorry Rumbold this should really be on the No-Fly Zone thread – perhaps i will cross-post.

Dear Lord, the remix of that is gold. FACEBOOKED!

Earwicga – I initially agreed with you, but I don’t see how this can be turned into a teachable moment for the man in question, because he is completely incoherent. It literally is like he’s just engaging in free association – how exactly can you rebut his arguments when he’s barely even managing to make any?

I don’t know about all that; but I rather pride my lefty-liberal self on being able to spell common words such as “wear”.

  24. Jemmy Hope — on 25th March, 2011 at 3:54 pm

He’s saying “Muslamic rape gangs”, nothing to do with rayguns.
“Multiculturalism has failed”, says Cameron. Well, here’s his poster boy for British values. Here’s why he’s closing down the public libraries and turning schools into burger-flipping academies.

  25. earwicga — on 25th March, 2011 at 5:47 pm

KJB – I think his arguments aren’t that far off Daily Mail headlines actually.

What the spokesperson for the English Doughnut League is trying to say is:

    “Islamic Regime”.

As a result of a fault in his universal translator’s Incoherent-Gibberish to English module, this has come unstuck as

    “Muslamic Raygums”

  30. Ravi Naik — on 25th March, 2011 at 10:01 pm

As a result of a fault in his universal translator’s Incoherent-Gibberish to English module, this has come unstuck as “Muslamic Raygums”

I believe he meant Islamic Rape Gangs. He talks about “15-year old girls getting raped” just after.

  31. earwicga — on 26th March, 2011 at 12:50 am

Ravi has it correct. The man in the video actually calls them Muslim rather than Pakistani – perhaps he read Rumbold’s post from January.

Of course it is easier to think of ‘Muslamic Rayguns’ than it is of gangs of rapists. Carry on laughing…

  32. douglas clark — on 26th March, 2011 at 1:31 am

    earwicga,

Seems to me, after listening to him a few more times that you and Ravi are right, he is trying to say ‘Islamic Rape Gangs’. These were the words he tried to say.

    It is still risible though….

Why the heck should anyone think someone like that is a source of knowledge? If that is Press TV’s ‘editorial decision making’ I can take them to a bus stop late on a Friday night where they will find polymaths and philosophers at least the equal of that young man.

There is no reason whatsoever not to ridicule him.

  33. earwicga — on 26th March, 2011 at 2:15 am

I don’t believe that nobody understood what he said. Carry on with the ridicule, this is why the EDL is successful.

  34. tremnele — on 26th March, 2011 at 4:14 am

    earwicga

    Oh, do get over yourself.

Education is important – but if you genuinely believe that Nazis respond to such by becoming enlightened souls, then you really are quite deluded.

    Humour can be a weapon.

As for the following “I don’t believe that nobody understood what he said” – spot the double negative.

  35. KJB — on 26th March, 2011 at 11:08 am

    Earwicga:

Well yeah, once I found out through the second video that he was talking about ‘rape gangs,’ there was a bit more of a theme to his words. Otherwise it came across as bits of ideas randomly following each other, as if he was regurgitating headline halves.

I’m just curious as to who you think should be educating this man. Most commenters on this site are non-white – it is anti-racism 101 that it is NOT the job of non-whites to educate whites about racism. He needs to have the drive and openness to educate himself, but given that he clearly believes in his bigoted views enough to come to a demo loudly espousing them – I don’t know how you teach someone like that the world is more complicated than tabloids say.

Racism is often challenged only when whites live alongside non-whites, and even then, it usually takes generations. I wouldn’t be surprised if this fella comes from a largely-white area.

    Rumbold,

Have a look at this video and watch for the agression against a journalist:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=4v0GoMQvOoQ

How long before there is selective violence aimed at the media?

  37. douglas clark — on 27th March, 2011 at 6:32 am

    Refresh @ 36,

    Point.

    But.

Why is it that I know a lot of white people that would take a lot of pleasure in punching this idiot in the face? Metaphorically speaking, obviously….

I do not accept the idea that there is a you and me. At least on this dimension: there are incredibly stupid racists and incredibly stupid religious nut jobs. It seems to me that they are at the extremities of debate, at the extremities of friendship.

AFAIK, you and I can talk to each other without too much acrimony. If we were daft enough, we could be Twitter ‘friends’.

We should not allow nutters to spoil that. Because I value your views, and the views of many other people that comment, or have commented, on here. I have had my mind changed because of what folk have said to me on here.

The point about Pickled Politics, it seems to me, is to allow folk to talk to each other. In a sort of free space where nutters are exposed for what they are.

It is up to the audience to determine who carries the argument and who doesn’t.

  38. damon — on 27th March, 2011 at 12:18 pm

Isn’t it wicked to mock the afflicted? The guy is clearly an imbecile.

Imbecile is a term for moderate to severe mental retardation, as well as for a type of criminal. It arises from the Latin word imbecillus, meaning weak, or weak-minded. “Imbecile” was once applied to people with an IQ of 26-50, between “moron” (IQ of 51-70) and “idiot” (IQ of 0-25).

    Douglas Clark,

If this interviewee is one of potentially many more then the story itself is important.

As for the coverage of EDL activity, there is every reason for global media to be present. It is a global story. If it embarasses Cameron on the world stage so much the better. It will be interesting to see how the EDL handles media presence from overseas. And likewise Cameron with his ‘multiculturism is dead’ mantra.

I agree with you, we are in it together and I don’t believe we have the level of division the EDL wants to portray. I wouldn’t want anyone to punch this guy, metaphorically or otherwise. What I would like to see is that he is brought back into the fold and the EDL leadership isolated. I expect that the battle for Europe will begin here, again. Merkel and Cameron are fools for attempting to ride this particular monster.

  40. Refresh — on 27th March, 2011 at 11:13 pm

‘If we were daft enough, we could be Twitter ‘friends’.’

A surefire way, if ever there was one, of ruining a healthy relationship.

  41. alfie — on 27th March, 2011 at 11:52 pm

This guy is clearly an imbecile.

But its very interesting that he is interviewed on Press TV, the mouthpiece for far-right Khomeinist ideology in the UK, which is actually very bigoted, extremist and hateful and ideologically opposed to the basic tenets of our liberal secular egalitarian society.

The EDL are crude – Press TV and their ideology is hatred, far right extremism with a more eloquent manner.

We live in funny times, eh.

  42. Laban — on 28th March, 2011 at 7:22 am

On the Left it’s generally been considered very bad form to mock someone for lack of intelligence, a poor education or a lowly social origin.

    Unless they’re on the Right.

(The locus classicus for this is Sarah Palin. 90% of the leftist abuse she gets is class-based, and the other 10% is sex-based.)

  43. Rumbold — on 28th March, 2011 at 8:26 am

    Laban:

On the Left it’s generally been considered very bad form to mock someone for lack of intelligence, a poor education or a lowly social origin.

I am not on the left. And I am mocking him because of his bigotry.

I think it is very dangerous to shy away from mocking such bigotry. It gives bigots free reign. I don’t have to repesct his or anyone else’s views.
