Birmingham keeps simmering

by Sunny on 3rd November, 2005 at 6:35 pm

1) As you may know by now, three men have been arrested and charged for the murder of Isiah Young-Sam about ten days ago. They are: Azhil Rashid Khan, 22, Waqar Ahmed, 25, and Afzal Asraf Khan, 22. The BBC has more.

They appeared before magistrates on Tuesday and will be remanded in custody until 8 November, before appearing at Birmingham Crown Court. They were also apparently fleeing the country and caught in Dubai. I will not say more to avoid prejudicing the trial. I just hope justice gets done.

2) Dowaine Phillip Maye was charged with the murder of Aaron James, the other man who was killed during the disturbances in Birmingham.

3) Ofcom has taken out warrants against 4 pirate radio stations in Birmingham to examine what they aired just before the riots and see if they made things worse.

4) Someone tells me that a group of men are circulating a leaflet calling for a Jihad against Africans in the area. This is still an unsubstantiated rumour, so I’m calling you on see if you can find out more. Who is circulating this? What does it say? Any information: just contact me. The last thing we need is a bunch of idiots using religion to carry out their gang activities.

5) I have also heard that the Uhuru Movement are planning to head over the the area next week or so. They say they are doing this purely for the protection of Africans as they do not trust the police. They have nothing against the Asians, they say, but they will be wearing some sort of uniform, so just be aware.

Update 6) Dozens of Muslim grave stones have been smashed and pushed over in a cemetery in Handsworth in Birmingham, the BBC reports. Leaflets were left there by a group calling themselves Black Nation.

If anyone can find out who these guys are affiliated with, let us know once again. Apparently, the leaflets read: “To all Muslim rapists, may you rot in hell” or something to that effect.

Does the uniform that Uhuru wear look anything like this?

Hands up anyone who didn’t want to post that link.

David T@ haha! That made me laugh out loudly.

I hope action is taken against both the radio station and ligali.

  5. BevanKieran — on 3rd November, 2005 at 7:31 pm

The first three points are welcome developments and might be expected to cool down tensions. Anybody calling for jihad against anyone surely could be locked up under some terrorist legislation.

The police have the ability to ban B.N.P and loyalist marches when they can be inflammatory. Wouldn’t a organisation on a day-trip, as indicated the uniform, constitute an illegal march?

  6. Geezer — on 3rd November, 2005 at 7:45 pm

The leaflet has been exposed as some stupid rant written by a kid, only a few were thrown around. The committee in Lozells mosque has called for any such leaflets to be destroyed by the community or handed into the police.

I’m glad Ofcom is taking action against these radio stations. There were raids today in London on such stations and to everyone surprise NOT! The operation by communication watchdog Ofcom uncovered drugs and weapons, including firearms.

Any more information about this “Uhuru Movement”, this sound’s like a very bad idea considering tensions are still high. Their negative view of the Police is also worrying.

    RIP Isiah Young-Sam

    Uhuru

That word as certain associations with what happened in Uganda and Kenya with the expulsion of Asians.

Does it even exist? It seems that rumours being broadcast with checking first were what caused this.

  10. Sunny — on 3rd November, 2005 at 11:24 pm

Leon - I’m appealing for info rather than blaming anyone. The difference here is I’m not pointing fingers and asking for reprisals. But if someone is doing this, then we need to be aware and deal with it before it gets out of hand. I have no faith in community leaders.

  11. leon — on 4th November, 2005 at 12:31 am

Sunny, didn’t mean to imply you’re pointing fingers, just that you have to be careful with stuff like this. Agree with you about community leaders though….these self appointed types seem to be as much of the problem as those small minded idiots fueling the distrust and tensions.

  12. Fe'reeha — on 4th November, 2005 at 1:19 am

I got a chance to speak to an Asian man today, who has a shop in Brimingham (in the midst of action scene). In his words, he considers the riots in Birmingham “not shocking”.
He said: “Asians have a pretty racist attitude towards other communities in Birmingham.”

  13. NorahJones — on 4th November, 2005 at 1:09 pm

Sunny, here’s some information for you.

Just had a text of a friend who’s dad’s buried in the Handsworth cemetry. He is going there right now as apparently up to 50 muslim graves have been destroyed in the last 24hrs by a group calling themselves “the black nation”.

Apparently, this group have distributed leaflets everywhere saying so.

  14. Bhadresh — on 4th November, 2005 at 1:13 pm

I don’t belive they called for a jihad against blacks. Is ligali spreading this again?

  15. Bhadresh — on 4th November, 2005 at 1:15 pm

norajones how awful. Do you think Sunny can write an article about the group of blacks destroying asian graves?

  16. Bhadresh — on 4th November, 2005 at 1:15 pm

David T that was funny :)

  17. NorahJones — on 4th November, 2005 at 1:18 pm

Probably not. It’s ok for groups like Ligali to make unsubstantiated claims but unless the general media get wind of the cemetry situation I’m guessing its too sensitive.

  18. Sunny — on 4th November, 2005 at 1:22 pm

If they are distributing leaflets, can anyone please get hold of a copy and scan it for me? I’m happy to put it up online.

  19. NorahJones — on 4th November, 2005 at 1:23 pm

    I’ll try.

  20. Bhadresh — on 4th November, 2005 at 1:23 pm

So they can keep doing this and we cannot write about it? I hope ligali members are reading this.

  21. Bhadresh — on 4th November, 2005 at 1:26 pm

    Thank you Sunny :)

  22. Sunny — on 4th November, 2005 at 1:34 pm

I’ve found the story regarding that. I’m going to email a few people about Black Nation. If anyone finds out more, let me know folks!

  23. NorahJones — on 4th November, 2005 at 1:40 pm

    Hi Sunny,

Just spoke to my mate again. Apparently, this incident had been on the news, Midlands today, not general and it was also on teletext. The leaflets were strewn all over the cemetery and the people there have cleaned it all up. Don’t see much chance of getting you a copy.

  24. bioux — on 4th November, 2005 at 1:42 pm

Yes, and let him know about the leaflet calling for a Jihad against Africans.

  25. Geezer — on 4th November, 2005 at 1:44 pm

Dozens of Muslim grave stones have been smashed and pushed over in a cemetery in Handsworth in Birmingham.

The desecration was discovered on Friday morning by relatives visiting the Muslim part of the cemetery.

Leaflets were also scattered with insults against Muslims, they were attributed to Black Nation.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/west_midlands/4406760.stm

This is disgraceful I mean how low can you go attacking the dead? This is just pure evil. The community should urge calm as many people will very angry now. The best step is let the police handle the situation.

  26. Geezer — on 4th November, 2005 at 1:47 pm

People have to be VERY CAREFUL here. This could be the work of right wing crazy folk who were rubbing their hands with glee with the Asian and African communities at each others throats. I have my doubts whether this could the work of black youths and also why insult a religion that has 50% of the African world following it?

  27. carlito — on 4th November, 2005 at 1:50 pm

I hope people on this forum can at least entertain the idea that the sub-humans who damaged these Muslim graves and scattered the crude photocopies were not the previously unheard of “black nation, but in fact a completely different organization, seeking to destroy two communities from within.

  28. bioux — on 4th November, 2005 at 2:01 pm

Oh, but that’s not what they want to hear…

  29. little nicky — on 4th November, 2005 at 2:03 pm

I don’t belive they called for a jihad against blacks. Is ligali spreading this again?

norajones how awful. Do you think Sunny can write an article about the group of blacks destroying asian graves?

So when presented with two ubstantiated rumours you instantly disbelieve the one that would have Asians in the wrong and believe the one that would have Blacks in the wrong?

Please never even try to pretend you are anything less than 100% biased

  30. Bhadresh — on 4th November, 2005 at 2:03 pm

We should stop blaming othertts and blame the people who have done this. I hope someone will get the leaflet of black nation.

  31. bioux — on 4th November, 2005 at 2:09 pm

I’ve never heard of the ” Black Nation” before

  32. NorahJones — on 4th November, 2005 at 2:18 pm

Bioux, shut the f*** up and take the matter in hand. Get the f*** off your high horse and accept what’s happened and let us deal with it. We don’t need any of your “loving up Ligali” shite right now.

  33. NorahJones — on 4th November, 2005 at 2:21 pm

Little nicky. Graves have been destroyed. One of which happens to be a relative of mine. Please take your condescending remarks elsewhere. I don’t give a shit whether these people were black or not, personally I’d like whoever it was to be flogged in public.

Sunny, I reckon you need to question certain people’s motives on this post. Certain people who seem to do nothing but harp on about hard done by there are and fail to apportion blame where its due.

  34. little nicky — on 4th November, 2005 at 2:27 pm

Who was it who introduced the term “get off your high horse” to all of these people who clearly do not know what it means? Is there a prase of the week scheme here?

Anyway the existence or not of the so called Black nation is precisely the matter at hand. It’s curious how the jihad leaflet is instantly dismissed as the work of crackpots and not representative of the Brum Pakistani community. The Black nation’s leaflet though is of course co-signed by every Black person in the UK (possibly the world) and whether or not anyone has ever heard of a group called the Black nation is besides the point. Get to apologising Blackies

  35. little nicky — on 4th November, 2005 at 2:30 pm

One of which happens to be a relative of mine. Please take your condescending remarks elsewhere. I don’t give a shit whether these people were black or not, personally I’d like whoever it was to be flogged in public.

The point, which of course sailed clear over your head, is that when presented with two rumours neither of which (s)he has seen any evidence to support bhadreh instinctively knows the one about negative Asian activity is false and the one about negative Black activity is true.

Don’t you think that indicates bias?

    Step up yor reading comprehension

  36. Sunny — on 4th November, 2005 at 2:32 pm

NorahJones - calm down. Again we don’t know if it was specifically a black group, as Geezer and others have stated, it may very well be a far-right group. In fact the NF are used to doing this sort of shit.

So unless we know more, please stop insulting others.

  37. NorahJones — on 4th November, 2005 at 2:32 pm

    Fuck off.

This is what the leaflet said:

    “Death to all muslim rapists”

“May all your dead rot in hell”

    Black Nation

Handwritten with a marker and phtocopied.

It could be the BNP. My point being, some silly person alleges that a mysterious disappearing girl gets raped and the black community are completely up in arms. “blame the Asians, blame the Muslims”!

Another allegation springs up that black nation desecrate muslim graves and instantly all you Ligali fans are like “it wasn’t me.” And we have to hang our heads and not retaliate.

    I repeat again:

    Fuck off.

  38. NorahJones — on 4th November, 2005 at 2:36 pm

Sunny, you are right. Bollocks to this. I hope you understand that having a muslim persons grave destroyed at the time of Eid is to me very upsetting. But people do not want to sympathise, they would rather just point out everything that has led up to this.

  39. NorahJones — on 4th November, 2005 at 2:38 pm

Little Nicky, note: “allegations” with reference to the black nation leaflets. Where’s the bias?

  40. little nicky — on 4th November, 2005 at 2:42 pm

Reading comprehension can be defined as the level of understanding of a passage or text

I’ll try one more time to break it down into overly simple terms for you Norah.

When faced with two rumours a person (bhadrah in this instance) automatically thinks the worst of one group and gives another the benefit of the doubt. That right there is bias.

I know I’m not speaking in esoteric terms, if you still don’t understand I don’t know how to make it any easier to fathom

  41. NorahJones — on 4th November, 2005 at 2:43 pm

Sorry, I don’t understand, are you trying to give me an english lesson?

  42. NorahJones — on 4th November, 2005 at 2:47 pm

You sound like BlackJett… exactly the kinda thing that shit for brains would have to say.

Why aren’t you sympathising with me Little Nicky? Why is it so hard for you to say “that’s really bad news NorahJones, I hope they get whoever did it”?

  43. little nicky — on 4th November, 2005 at 2:57 pm

I’M not trying to give you an english lesson, no. If someone had at some point it would have been helpful.

Actually let me put it like this, (I’m sure if I throw in a reference to Blacks being evil your brain will process it easier) there’s a fair chance that over at ligali they are talking about how terrible the jihad leaflet is while saying that Blacks can’t possibly have written the graveyard one. ANY PERSON who instantly takes one groups sides over the others with no evidence whether they be Black, Asian, Chinese, Seven DAy Adventist or Muslim is showing their bias and prejudice. Why can you not understand that simple point?

As for why I’m not saying how sorry I am? Would that improve how you’re feeling? At this point it would be incredibly insincere of me to be honest. Is people vandalising Muslim graveyards something that concerns me? Yes of course it is seeing as I will one day be buried in a Muslim graveyard alongside my Muslim wife and, eventually, Muslim kids

  44. NorahJones — on 4th November, 2005 at 2:58 pm

Hey do ya reckon there’s a wall of silence?
Or do you think if we put enough pressure on another community and there is something sinister going on, sooner or later they’ll cave under the pressure and push the perpertrators forward?
Do you reckon that might work?

I mean, I know we have no definitive proof but if they’re innocent they’ve got nothing to fear have they? I’m sure, just like our community, everyone knows everyone else. Right?

  45. NorahJones — on 4th November, 2005 at 3:00 pm

Fine, Little Nicky, Fine! I gets.

Ooh, get you and your intellectual superiority.

  46. NorahJones — on 4th November, 2005 at 3:18 pm

I’ve just heard it was the BNP. Rumours again but people are saying it.

  47. little nicky — on 4th November, 2005 at 3:18 pm

So you did instantly understand it as soon as I framed Blacks as the “bad guys” of the piece?

Wow is all I can say. That’s some nex’ level selective agnosia you got there.

  48. NorahJones — on 4th November, 2005 at 3:20 pm

Jaysus! I jut want you off my back! Anything to get you off my back!

  49. NorahJones — on 4th November, 2005 at 3:20 pm

And you mentioned Ligali. You don’t have to say much about Ligali before I get where you’re coming from.

  50. NorahJones — on 4th November, 2005 at 3:22 pm

I have my biases Little Nicky, hands up. First I’m a muslim, then I am asian, then I’m part of a community.

Are you telling me you don’t?

  51. little nicky — on 4th November, 2005 at 3:27 pm

“O ye who believe! Be steadfast witnesses for Allah in equity, and let not hatred of any people seduce you that ye deal not justly. Deal justly, that is nearer to your duty. Observe your duty to Allah”. (5:8)

“O Ye who believe! Be ye staunch in justice, witness of Allah, even though it be against yourself or your parents or your kindred, whether a rich or poor man, for Allah is nearer unto both (than ye are).” (4: 135)

If you are Muslim then perhaps consider what the Quran has to say about things like this. Justice is the God’s way and you are supposed to always be just in your dealings . I’m not insisting you change your opinion of anything or anyone, it’s just something to consider. Food for thought if you like
