Anjem Choudhary and mates latest publicity stunt: ‘Shariah 4 America’

    by Sunny
    3rd March, 2011 at 3:51 pm

Remember Islam4UK? They got banned but came back as ‘Muslims Against Crusades’. Before that they were Al-Ghuraaba and before that Al-Muhajiroun.

Yes, it’s Anjem Choudhary and his 20 idiot mates back to their old publicity stunts again. Previous luminaries from this mob includes Abu Izzadeen and Omar Bakri (now reportedly hiding in Lebanon).

Anyway, their latest project publicity stunt is: Shariah 4 America. The best I can say for them is they have some competent graphic designers who are good at putting the bejeesus into any Tea Party nutjob.

You can tell its the same lot because they have a prominent ‘media enquiries’ page which links to a mobile number (07956 600 569) frequently given out by Anjem Choudhary & co.

Right-wingers are already hyper-ventilating, even though the chances of any of these chumps being able to fly across to the US are less than nil. I hope the US national media pay less attention than the over-the-top reaction British journalists usually exhibit.

Update: Yup, its Choudhary in front of the camera! Explaining why they’re ‘postponed’ their demonstration. (via @xbatasi).

The quite extraordinary thing about these websites and stunts is that they’re quite explicitly designed to stir up right-wing outrage. They provide helpful download links to high quality depictions of the Statue of Liberty covered with a giant burkha so the Daily Mail’s design team can insert it with nary a whisper of effort into their inevitable flatulent outrage pieces. But what’s the gameplan? Are they trying to instigate a race war and have Muslims injured or killed by EDL thugs? Are they just having a laugh; could this be a Joaquin Phoenix-esque pisstake? Or are they just really bored and desperate for attention? It’s absolutely barmy that they do it in such a knowing and wink-wink way, and absolutely barmy that anyone takes these twats seriously.

They should let him in and perhaps some red neck pastor will shoot the wanker.

But what’s the gameplan? Are they trying to instigate a race war and have Britons injured or killed by Choudary style thugs? Are they just having a laugh; could this be a Joaquin Phoenix-esque pisstake? Or are they just really bored hooligans and desperate for attention? No they are not. There’s not one word of condemnation in the article you cited, just mockery and amusement. Once again, Americans fail to live up to the stereotypical view of them held by British lefties.

    5. Nadeem — on 3rd March, 2011 at 6:40 pm

I think that their youtube videos and websites are very professional - does anyone know who is financing them?

The answer may help explain if there is (or what is) their ‘gameplan.’

      Right-wingers are already hyper-ventilating

      No they are not.

Unfortunately, Fox News have recently been giving Anjem Choudary a disproportionate amount of publicity:

      Fox anchor Sean Hannity: http://mediamatters.org/blog/201102020061

      http://www.foxnews.com/us/2011/02/20/muslim-cleric-plans-protest-outside-white-house-attempt-spread-sharia-law/

      Fox anchor Glenn Beck: http://mediamatters.org/research/201102250057

    7. septicisle — on 3rd March, 2011 at 10:04 pm

How many times is it now that they’ve announced demonstrations only to then either not turn up or cancel them? Have the media honestly not learned yet, or is just much more fun to get trolled and then troll others?

Hmm. Think I might have answered my own question there.

    8. Eurasian Sensation — on 4th March, 2011 at 5:25 am

Is Choudhary still collecting a fecking dole cheque from the British government he hates so much?

As much as I hate to hear xenophobes spout stuff like “If you don’t like our country, get out”, this is one case where it definitely applies. Choudhary needs to go spend some time somewhere that does have sharia law, and see what happens to rabble-rousers there.

    9. fug — on 4th March, 2011 at 11:14 am

I wouldn’t wish him upon them. He clearly needs some kind of help.

    10. Tan — on 4th March, 2011 at 12:15 pm

      Why give these idiots publicity?
This blog post really is of no benifit to anyone, and was probably this partcular scheme’s saving grace “look brother, at least someone noticed!” they will point at their next meeting.

    11. damon — on 5th March, 2011 at 2:06 pm

Jai @6. Having Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity hyping up Anjem Choudary would be such a doddle to mock - that it would be actually fun to go out in the streets on a saturday and hand out some leaflets lampooning them.
I’m sure that Jon Stewart has alrady been doing it.

James Whale used to have Choudary on his late night Talk Sport radio show years ago, and it was obvious to even that ‘white van man’ kind of listenership that the guy was a bit of a joke and it was all being done as a wind up. Are you suggesting Jai that ordinary people are too dumb to know the difference between clowns and serious people?
OK maybe some are, but still …

    12. Dr Paul — on 5th March, 2011 at 2:47 pm

Re #1: Imran Ahmed: ‘But what’s the gameplan? Are they trying to instigate a race war and have Muslims injured or killed by EDL thugs?’

That’s exactly it. They want to drive a wedge deeply between Muslims and non-Muslims so that they can say: ‘We told you so; they all hate us.’ They also know that religious hatred aimed at Muslims tends to strengthen the more extreme Muslim elements — the separatists, the hard-liners, the jihadists — so anything that can possibly annoy non-Muslims is fair game. In that sense, they and the EDL feed off each other; they both want to raise the stakes, they both want to divide Muslims from other citizens.

    13. joe90 — on 5th March, 2011 at 6:46 pm

Choudhary and his crew are around to wind up people and give extreme right wing groups a further excuse to exist.

They hunt publicity so media love to give them the air time they crave. We know this, so who is to blame the media or politicians who let this game continue?

    14. KB Player — on 5th March, 2011 at 9:47 pm

      Why give these idiots publicity?

Yeah, Choudary should be left among the Great Ignored. All publicity to him is good publicity.

Actually a cunning wheeze would be to put around stories that Choudary has shaved his beard and is now working as a bar manager; has dropped Islamism for gardening and is often seen picking up John Innes compost at the garden centre; attends Campaign for Real Ale tastings. See how that pisses him off.

    15. Dr Paul — on 6th March, 2011 at 12:19 pm

    16. douglas clark — on 6th March, 2011 at 1:15 pm

You’ve actually got to admire Anjem Choudary.

His early career in shock marketing, using around twenty ‘useful idiots’, in a judo hold on the whole of Western society, led him to the epiphany that this was a skill wasted on a mere shock doctrine.

It was a strange moment when, accompanied by the military ranks of the worlds media, that he marched into 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and took over.

It was, in the short term at least, a bloodless revolution. The forces of the fourth estate, having built him up to be the most fearsome figure since Genghis Khan - rather than the sadly mundane reality - surrendered the entire news media instantly.

24/7 - what will this mean? Oh! It’s really for the best so it is.

And, as we all know, where the fourth estate goes, so does the third, and the second and the first.

Such is modern democracy and such is the genius of Anjem Choudary.

All hail! The new master of the universe!

Rising from a fucked up dole monger to President of the USA. You couldn’t make it up.

Well, you could. It would be President George W Bush. Who is now excised from all photographs, video tapes and media generally. He didn’t exist, did he?

    17. Lamia — on 6th March, 2011 at 6:38 pm

Of course, you would have to be a ‘right winger’ to care about the fact that Anjem Choudary incites hatred and even violence against various groups in society, including especially homosexuals, and with impunity, wouldn’t you?

No true liberal would get bothered about a trivial matter like that. It’s all a bit of a laugh, isn’t it?

Of course if it was someone inciting hatred and violence against Asians, then Sunny, Jai and co would find that equally funny. Not.

    18. BenSix — on 6th March, 2011 at 7:14 pm

      It’s all a bit of a laugh, isn’t it?

Who finds it amusing, Lamia? Me, I think it’s pretty foul that broadcasters give this dangerous, devious twit a platform to expound his views.

On that note, I also think it’s pretty sick that Glenn Beck’s website gives a home to folk like this…

…lets turn all of meeca and the rest of islam into a burned out cinder…

      A Big BBQ PIT!!!
For the worlds biggest pig roast!

…we need to give our military fighting in the middle east ammo coated with pigs blood and arm our predators with ‘pig blood bombs’…

Keeps ‘em off the streets, I guess.

    19. Lamia — on 6th March, 2011 at 7:55 pm

      You are being obtuse, Ben.

“Me, I think it’s pretty foul that broadcasters give this dangerous, devious twit a platform to expound his views.”

      I think it’s foul that

      a) he isn’t in jail, and
      b) Sunny and co imply you have to be a right winger to find Choudary deserving of anger.

    20. BenSix — on 6th March, 2011 at 8:05 pm

I believe they’re implying - well, saying - that it’s right-wing media outlets that are giving him the attention he so fervently craves.

(Ie. “Fox News have recently been giving Anjem Choudary a disproportionate amount of publicity“.)

To choose a parallel, I empathise with people who think Stephen Green deserves anger but I don’t feel guys like the OU should bless him with publicity.

    21. douglas clark — on 6th March, 2011 at 9:01 pm

      Lamia,

      You say:

Sunny and co imply you have to be a right winger to find Choudary deserving of anger.

I don’t think that is what Sunny is saying at all. It seems transparent to me that Choudary is a consummate publicist and that, in fact, the faux outrage that the media pretend to have for him is them playing to the prejudices of their base audience. The risk that they play is that people will take him seriously because they treat him seriously. Who else, with the support of two men and a dug gets the amount of air time he does?

The impression given by the media is that he is a far more influential figure than he actually is.

Here’s a comment you might approve of:

“He’s a media whore,” says Mehdi Hasan, a senior editor at the New Statesman who has covered Choudary. “There are real Islamist groups that can get crowds together but his is not one of them. He doesn’t have the numbers to make good on his claims. What he does have is a media that’s very happy to play the game with him.”

    22. Dr Paul — on 6th March, 2011 at 9:09 pm

Lamia: One need not be a right-winger to get annoyed by Choudary, I am well on the left and I find him obnoxious. What I think our author is saying is that Choudary gives right-wingers who don’t like Muslims in general an excuse to be objectionable about all Muslims, not just nut-cases like Choudary.

Choudary, of course, actually likes this sort of reaction, as he wants to promote the idea that these bigots represent all non-Muslims, in order to try to build a Berlin wall between Muslims and non-Muslims, which is also the intention of the anti-Islam bigots. As I wrote before, one side feeds off the other, and vice-versa. Choudary complains about anti-Islamic sentiments, but secretly he wants more bigotry against his religion, as it plays into his hands.

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
