Miranda, and/or anyone else familiar with the Crudas campaign, could you please tell me why he avoided asking the obvious questions on Iraq?

Somebody did. And they won.

I've just recieved a booklet from the Fabian Society, with essays by each of the candidates. Cruddas has written quite an interesting anlysis of New Labour and the myth that the working class is withering away.

Leon,

Hey! I'm the backroom guy around here. With more of a Columbo image than I imagine you to have. :-)

Anyways, both you and Sonia, and Katy too, have more worthwhile things to say than a (insert correct collective noun here) I guess gaggle (?) of pager obsessed Labour MPs.

If my guess is right, do you imagine young Mr Hundal is going to be lobby fodder? Thought not.

And just after I end this post, much as the great man did, as he made his way out of the room.

"And one more thing, what makes you think you're not at least as good as the folk sitting there now? In fact, a whole lot better? Same for you Sonia."

If I were ever forced to join the Labour Party at gunpoint, I would vote for Jon Cruddas, on the basis that he would refuse the job of deputy Prime Minister, as it really is a non-job.

He also looks relatively competent compared to the other candidates (apart from Alan Johnson). Hazel Blears jumped on the Maragret Hodge bandwagon with this speech:

http://news.independent.co.uk/uk/politics/article2640423.ece

It was the usual material, apart from the possibly unsurpassed claim that her Salford constituents were worried about immigration because <blockquote>"they are not abiding by health and safety."</blockquote>

Presumably, down her local they all sit around complaining that those immigrants had failed to take heed of health and safety regulation 47, subsection 9, paragraph 4 (to do with having a properly-trained door opener in each office). The good burghers of Salford then went on to discuss how much they liked EU legislation, before suggesting that top footballers and Steve Maclaren should get a lot more money.

oh you're so sweet douglas!

i echo leon. i don't think any party would have me - if they had a single brain cell they'd realise there was no way i'd toe the party line - they like conformists, they don't want any free-thinkers!and of course i don't want to have anything to do with a 'party' - it would be such a total nightmare, i can't think of anything worse - perhaps becoming a Wahhabi and planning world domination or something.

interesting how there are many 'groups' of people who are potential voting 'blocks'. e.g. commonwealth citizens - all the young aussies in town, etc.

Aww you're too kind but I doubt any party would have me as their candidate.

I'm more of a behind the scenes kinda guy (heh I've this picture of people thinking 'yeah like that smoking guy out of X Files'!) really.

That said, if the mixed race demographic became a serious voting block...

ChrisC,

<blockquote>

Given much of what he says, Sunny might as well be on that “A” list!

Good luck!

</blockquote>

Agreed.

If they are on a talent hunt, maybe they should look at the Katy Newtons, the Leon Greens and the Sonias too! Some of the most sensible people it has been my privilege to read on t'internet.

Join? What for? John Cruddas may end up having no more of a task than John Prescott. Keeping the party and the unions in check.

Cruddas has to prove himself.

I too got the Blackadder email - no mention of the biggest failure of any administration - asking to support Jon Cruddas.

Yes support him by all means, join a union - you don't need to be a party hack. You'll still get a vote (maybe a bit late this time of course).

Thanks for the hat-tip.

Some very good additional reasons why to vote Cruddas there too. Hei anti-BNP, anti-racism stance is exactly what the Labour Party needs in a Deputy and his working class politics is just what the country needs.

I hope that should Cruddas gain the Deputy position, or even if he doesn't, you might be tempted to join the party. It's progressive people like yourself that we need more of amongst our ranks if we are to move forward and make a real difference both home and abroad.

Sunny, you join an illustrios list of Curddas supporters, which includes the estemed Baldrick from Blackadder.

From: www.chickendinner.co.uk

'Jonathan Cruddas (45, MP for BNP-hotspot Dagenham since 2001)

In from 125/1 at one point, Cruddas is a union man who has often voted against the government (tuition fees, trident and trust schools) and has said he doesn't want the post. High-profile supporters include a grim alliance of Ken Livingstone, Roy Hattersley, the Transport and General Workers Union and Baldrick from Blackadder.

Form: Previous deputy leaders have had heavy union involvement dating right back to the very first, John Robert Clynes. Many London MPs have also held the post, including Clem Atlee, Herbert Morrison and George Brown.

Will get the post because: Brown would like to button his yap.'
