  • It’s the ‘logo of the 2012 Games is utter crap’ open thread!

    by Leon
    4th June, 2007 at 4:14 pm

Oh dear God! The logo for the 2012 Olympics has been unveiled and may I be the first to say it looks remarkably, almost cosmically, and yes a little insanely CRAP! Consider this the weekend open thread that never was, let rip on the 2012 committee for the sheer idiocy of allowing this out of the brainstorming meeting.

    2012 logo

Makes you feel proud to be British doesn’t it? Anyway, I will resist the temptation to post up the funniest yet lewd p!sstake I’ve seen of this and leave it to your imaginations to work out…

    Update:
There’s now an online petition you can sign to get them to change it, and the BBC have a poll too.

      The Olympic Logo…

Here it is. Seb Coe says: It will define the venues we build and the Games we hold and act as a reminder of our promise to use the Olympic spirit to inspire everyone and reach out to young people…

As a former advertising professional, this looks like the sort of thing a CEO would bring in to the agency saying that his grandchild had ‘designed’ it, and could we tart it up a bit.

This is the sort of thing that drives young art directors to the gin bottle.

Crap doesn’t start to describe it.

    2. Chairwoman — on 4th June, 2007 at 4:37 pm

Perhaps they employed the team from ‘Monkey World’.

    3. Leon — on 4th June, 2007 at 4:37 pm

Yeah I wanted to write stronger swear words but thought Sunny might give me a bollocking if I did (he’s such a tyrant!)…

    4. Rumbold — on 4th June, 2007 at 4:42 pm

Taxpayers’ money well spent. There is no need to swear and rage against it Leon; it speaks for itself.

    5. AsifB — on 4th June, 2007 at 4:46 pm

Apart from building a swastika, I can’t see what the three bottom blocks add to the design.

      400 thousand pounds it cost.
      400 thousand pounds!

I am not surprised. After all that ‘Katie on the Apprentice’ (the evil one) is a ‘Global Brand Consultant.’

    6. neha — on 4th June, 2007 at 4:52 pm

The ONLY nice thing about it - is that it is somewhat pink. Not the right shade of pink mind you!

And yes, how about an open thread on the Apprentice. We all need to spew venom on Katie somewhere!

    7. Leon — on 4th June, 2007 at 4:53 pm

We all need to spew venom on Katie somewhere!

You can do that here too! :D

    8. Kulvinder — on 4th June, 2007 at 5:06 pm

Obviously the £9billion didn’t go on graphic designers then.

    9. Refresh — on 4th June, 2007 at 5:11 pm

      What’s wrong with it?

      Over-priced perhaps.

    10. Kulvinder — on 4th June, 2007 at 5:11 pm

holy shit i just realise it says 20-12, but why make it all squigly?

    11. Leon — on 4th June, 2007 at 5:15 pm

      What’s wrong with it?

You honestly want the whole world to identify our countries hosting of the games with that logo?

    12. Kulvinder — on 4th June, 2007 at 5:16 pm

      I like #2 #6 and #8

    13. David T — on 4th June, 2007 at 5:28 pm

      Oh god.

      This logo will jinx 2012.

The games are going to be a shambles - I just know it.

      How depressing.

    14. Kulvinder — on 4th June, 2007 at 5:30 pm

Wembley was a good omen :D

    15. Refresh — on 4th June, 2007 at 5:31 pm

I did say it was over-priced. By about £399,990.

Have a look at Kulvinder’s link, #11 sums it up.

The logo is the equivalent of our entry for Eurovision.

Just watch how, given enough branding clout it becomes a part of the ‘culture’.

    16. Leon — on 4th June, 2007 at 5:31 pm

Oh yes, 2012, how, er, clever. I’ve seen better felt-tipped scrawls on the doors of Central Line carriages.

    20. David T — on 4th June, 2007 at 5:50 pm

      Now, *this* is just fabulous.

The BBC is displaying an “alternative designs for the Olympics logo”, sent in my readers.

      http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_pictures/6719747.stm

Until recently, this was one of the ten designs on display:

      http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/43006000/jpg/_43006883_sean_stayte_416.jpg

(or here if they take it down:

      http://i7.tinypic.com/4r9pmau.jpg

Somebody at the BBC must have worked out what it is a reference to!

    21. Sunny — on 4th June, 2007 at 5:51 pm

Lordamercy! That is the worst logo I have ever seen! This open thread is well deserved. I like the simplistic #7 London map logo I saw on the BBC website. This is beyond crap. It’s post-modern crap.

*shoots himself along with David T*

    22. Leon — on 4th June, 2007 at 5:51 pm

Instead of Bronze, Silver, Gold, it could be any ol’ iron, pearly king, and diamond.

Give it a chance, and it might grow on you — like Scooch. Just kidding — the Scooch bit, that is.

doh! I’d eventually managed to get that image out of my head after I read it on yours and now its back :(

    34. sid — on 4th June, 2007 at 7:06 pm

#33: what is that image a reference to Kulvinder?

    35. Kulvinder — on 4th June, 2007 at 7:10 pm

make sure you’re not on any kind of work computer, google ‘goatse’ on the wiki article that comes up scroll to the bottom to the links. Unless you’re easily shocked click first link.

It was basically the defining shock image of late 90s internet culture. Everyone tries to subvertly reference it.

    36. David T — on 4th June, 2007 at 7:16 pm

      Oh you poor poor boy.

      Do not google goatse.

yep, that’s going straight to my desktop wallpaper.

    38. Don — on 4th June, 2007 at 7:24 pm

Maybe we’re being a little harsh. After all, it must have taken most of an afternoon to come up with that. So it probably is worth MORE THAN TEN YEARS OF MY BLEEDING SALARY.

I have no problem with unimpressive footballers pulling down a million a year basic, or Z-list slebs copping a nurse’s annual income for a photo-shoot. That’s commercial cash and the rules are different. I am immune to envy. But, as B’brain elegantly explained in 24, this is the people in charge of our bloody money blithely handing over 400 grand for a piece of off-pink shite.

    39. El Cid — on 4th June, 2007 at 7:24 pm

      oh my fucking h christ

    41. Kulvinder — on 4th June, 2007 at 7:34 pm

btw for those of you who had never heard of it before and were unaware just how much people try to reference it this is an actual time magazine cover from 2004 (its safe to click). This effort (again safe) was from a b3ta member in 2003.

    42. sid — on 4th June, 2007 at 7:35 pm

    44. David T — on 4th June, 2007 at 7:44 pm

hahahaha I had never seen that Time cover before.

People ought to be that subversive.

    45. Riz — on 4th June, 2007 at 7:45 pm

This design is a big joke. It would have served the Olympics much better if they’d simply held a competition among the design colleges, with a £10k prize or the like. I’m sure there would have been endless quality designs, and it would have generated some +ive pr. This big centrally planned monster needs a few market orientated economists at the helm !

If I paid taxes I’d be an unhappy bunny!

    46. Don — on 4th June, 2007 at 7:46 pm

      Riz,

      Damn right.

    47. Kulvinder — on 4th June, 2007 at 7:49 pm

I was happy in my ignorance, man.

It pretty much burns itself into your eyeballs :D

      Did Ranjana get sussed?

As far as i know it was all safe.

    48. Leon — on 4th June, 2007 at 7:50 pm

Heh this logo aint last till the Olympics! I predict they’ll hastily ‘evolve’ it in the next year or so (shorten that to months if the derision continues)…

    49. Leon — on 4th June, 2007 at 7:53 pm

Riz @ 47, very well said and an excellent idea…

    50. Sunny — on 4th June, 2007 at 7:58 pm

Let’s get back to the topic please, this is not a thread about disgusting stuff on the net. I read the wikipedia entry. That was bad enough for me.

    51. Ramiie — on 4th June, 2007 at 8:01 pm

As a marketing professional, I can say with hands on heart…this logo will get people talking (about the olympics and the logo). It certainly will be among the biggest talking points on the forum.

And so…olympics buzz has started.. as it should… with controversy and strong opinions.

      Great marketing.

      Ramiie takes his hat off.

    52. Don — on 4th June, 2007 at 8:02 pm

I think we’ve covered the topic ,Sunny. The logo is over-priced crap and only marginally less offensive than Kulvinder’s contribution. At least we didn’t get charged for that.

    53. Leon — on 4th June, 2007 at 8:12 pm

Ramie, that’s an interesting view, what do you make of reports from the 2012 committee that this logo may change over time? Sounds to me like a pr damage limitation at work…

    54. Vikrant — on 4th June, 2007 at 8:28 pm

Holy shit its somebody peeing in the basin.

    55. KB Player — on 4th June, 2007 at 8:44 pm

Do you remember the Consignia debacle? Royal Mail, that everybody knew, gave itself a new name and bland logo at great cost and then had to change it back, also at great cost, because nobody could understand what Consignia was supposed to be. Is Ladbrokes running odds on whether they will stick to this logo or not?

    56. Kismet Hardy — on 4th June, 2007 at 8:46 pm

I think you’re all being extremely unfair. This is clearly designed to evoke the true spirit of the Olympics by harking back to its origins in Greece. See how the two men are grappling in a homosexual way? The one bending forward to provide oral relief is clearly a funk soul brother with an afro, so it covers the multicultural angle also

    57. Kismet Hardy — on 4th June, 2007 at 8:48 pm

Oh. Just read above. It’s Lisa Simpson giving the blow job. Doh. The Americans have all the fun

    58. Leon — on 4th June, 2007 at 8:50 pm

Is Ladbrokes running odds on whether they will stick to this logo or not?

No idea but there’s a petition and the BBC are running a poll (see update in the opening post).

Palestinians - the lot of you!

I think its a pretty good logo - not sure about the colour - but one can’t be racist about this - but getting a new British Lion and 2012 and Lisa giving blow job - It works on so many levels - I think its a classic in the making.

    79. Ramiie — on 5th June, 2007 at 6:45 pm

      Leon

I think it wil be really sad if they decide to change the logo. It’s doing what its suppose to do, generate a buzz, hog column inches, promote unbiquity for the quango organising the event. Marketing isn’t about selling aestethics..just commodities and opinions.

    80. Chairwoman — on 5th June, 2007 at 6:50 pm

Ramiie - You’re absolutely right! It’s crap, it’s expensive, although having seen the animation, perhaps not, but it’s placing the Olympics centre stage and that’s what a good campaign does.
