The Daily Mail 100 years ago*

Reading through Professor Andrew’s history of MI5, I came across a story about anti-German propaganda in the run up to the first world war.

In 1906, a popular author, William Le Queux, published a book, The Invasion of 1910, explaining in meticulous detail German plans to invade Britain in 1910. The plans were made up by the author, but were widely believed. They were serialised by the Daily Mail, whose proprietor had a special hatred of the Germans (in his final will he accused them of poisoning him by ice cream).

The Daily Mail changed the invasion plans in the book, as they felt that there were too many villages on the invasion route where the Daily Mail’s circulation was low. Instead towns were added with a greater number of Daily Mail readers (to induce extra fear).

The serialisation added 80,000 to the Daily Mail’s readership and contributed to greater anti-German feeling.

*Well, 104 years ago.

I got the erroneous impression that the Daily Mail somehow evolved into what it is today through some sort of vicious feedback-loop with its readership, but viewing history lessons like Andrew Marr’s Making of Modern Britain and this one have shown it’s always been like this.

They may not be politically fascists any more, but emotionally they are just as nasty and vicious as they ever were.

Really interesting Rumbold. And of course just a few years later they were supporting Hitler and Mussolini.

Le Quex was the original security loon. He also did a book with Russia invading Britain and the Germans coming to the rescue. I have a copy somewhere.

The Daily Mail was right about the villages. It reads like a travelogue. When the British Army is fighting the Russians in the west of Manchester you get descriptions of Eccles that would be useful to a trainee taxi driver.

Urgh. Well, the Daily Mail’s keeping it real by their standards, eh?! Perhaps this is the most tolerant they’ve ever been! Scary thought.

The Daily Mail published this suprisingly honest article:

‘I didn’t think of Iraqis as humans,’ says U.S. soldier who raped 14-year-old girl before killing her and her family

You guys need to grow up. The Daily Mail could stop publishing tomorrow and it wouldn’t change one thing about the political debate in Britain or the entrenched positions and attitudes you dislike and associate with “Daily Mail readers”. Your obsession with one newspaper and its readers comes over as elitist and cranky. Change the fucking record, why don’t you?

Daily mail is leader of the pack when it comes to made up and exaggerated stories. The daily express, the star and few other comes do same thing.

If it wasn’t for immigrants and muslims would the daily mail have anything to write about?

Eh? Is that meant to be written in English????

MPACuk does a nice line in often racist, most often completely factually wrong fairy tales…

But in a “good” cause, eh, Joe! Sticking it to the Jooz [/sarcasm]

If there were no Jews and no Israel what would the illiterate Islamist goons over at MPACuk have to write about, one wonders?

    Joe 90 @ 10,

Is there the slightest evidence that AbuF is a member of the EDL? I’d have thought not.

As far as I know he lives in China.

Not a known hotbed for the EDL.

Seriously, how is your medication balancing out? You used to be able to see other peoples’ points of view without jumping to conclusions. Now you don’t.

I am genuinely concerned for you, Joe 90.
