And this is what I mean by stupid arguments. Is this said anywhere? Btw, Iran is not a new country, it has been there for about 5000 years and is one of the few countries that hasn’t been colonised. In fact India is a much younger country, politically, than Iran. And yet India seems to have grown up and embraced democracy.

but say for argument’s sake – Iranian boats were sailing as close as er… English channel … wouldn’t we be freaked and start making strange claims? The Brits were after all not in home territory – what are they doing all the way out there? Aprt from being in Iraq, that is.

my kid asked me the other day what were the British sailors doing all the way out there? I tried explaining and then stopped and thought – yeah, why, not taking a scenic route so the Iranians did what they did. As we could do.

What I found more interetsting is that the US ships probably regulalry sail these waters – but the Iranians wouldn’t dare seize any American ships. No, sir. It’s just as Brits they feel they csn do it to. So when we ask who came out sorry state from this episoe, it’s us. Profesisonal soliders are required to just confirm their name and number and rank.

Bearing in mind the British troops were not in disputed waters this was a publicity stunt for Iran; internally it will have sparked further ill feeling of the West, namely the USA and of Britain. The big question is, are the Iranians supporting Iraqi insurgents? And if so, why?

What I found particularly abhorrent, and I use the word abhorrent because my Chief Constable uses the word too, though I mean it; was the blindfolding, the cocking of weapons, etc.

This together with the separation of Faye Turner and feeding her with lies as a control mechanism, plus the slideshow of these personnel on Iranian TV admitting they were in the wrong, was the message that the Iranian Politicians wanted their people to know.

This was a psychological show of publicity and lies and Iran have done nothing here to curb any view that they are corrupt in the manner in which they executed the capture of the personnel and the manner in which they used these people for their own political gains. I am afraid this has done nothing to aid good community and race relations.

I am a little uncomfortable about lines like as crap as our country is, i’d rather live here than Iran or Syria or elsewhere.
When we debate presumably we’re not casting judgement on where we would rather prefer to live – we’re simly trying to comment on the scope of democratic processes – here or elsewhere.

If we wanted t compare whose the worse offender of human rights in the world – it looks like US and Saudi are right at the top.

But plenty of people choose to live in the US.
