MUMBAI, India, April 4 (Reuters) – Twenty-eight villages in the north Indian state of Haryana, which produced the country’s greatest fast bowler Kapil Dev, have banned cricket barely two weeks after the national team’s World Cup first-round exit.
“We all have taken this decision and those who go against it will have to face social boycott. We’ve enshrined this in the Panchayat records of 28 villages,” said Tewa Singh, head of Dadan Panchayat.
“We will stop playing it (cricket). We will play kabaddi, football, volleyball and wrestle instead,” Pankaj, a resident of the village, said.
India’s World Cup-frenzy had been fuelled by television channels and media outlets touting the team as favourites.
Irate fans and several former players have called for large-scale changes to the team, finalists in the last edition, after defeats to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in the Caribbean.
Kapil Dev, India’s 1983 World Cup-winning captain, was born in Chandigarh but played for Haryana in domestic competitions.

I remember hearing that some Jewish people in the US objected to the construction of a hindu temple because of the swastikas. But Hindus, as far as I can understand, managed to convince european lawmakers not to ban the swastika. It is incredibly silly, not to mention that they are not even the same symbols (reversed and 45 inclination), in addition to what William has said.

We should not restrict freedom of speech, although they should be subject to defamation laws. I rather see nationalistic parties showing their true ugly colours, then talking in code words (e.g. immigrants = all non-europeans, muslims = all non-europeans, etc.)

In a major breakthrough, police in Jamaica have today released a digitally-enhanced picture from the hotel CCTV cameras which clearly show a man shouting Woolmer! whilst beating on his room door on the night of his murder.

Police hope the release of the remarkably clear photo will lead to an arrest, although it is feared the suspect may have already taken a page out of Osama bin Laden’s book by hiding amongst caves on the Afghan/Pakistan border……..
