It is unfortunate that 35 years after independence Bangladesh has no place for Taslima Nasrin and India which sheltered the intellectuals of Bangladesh in those dark days of Pakistani rule can't find the courage today to grant permanent resident status to Taslima.

Should come along Sonia, I'm sure there will be tickets at the door. Parapar's music is excellent, recently getting an airing on Late Junction, Radio 3.

And Drishtipat are doing a "dramatic reading" from the book - which should be good.

interesting. i would think of dropping in however i see that they recommend booking tickets in advance - don't know if its too late to get any now.

just as well you posted this sunny - i always forget every single year that 26th March is Bangladesh's national day. on the 26th of March 1971 'we' declared independence from Pakistan. 16th Dec. 1971 was when 'victory' was achieved - so that's Victory day.

sorry to be pedantic as ever - but 35 years of independence? Hmm - this is 2007 - i daresay if we're counting from 26th March 1971 to next monday that makes 36 years from the independence declaration...

oh yes and the 25th March is 200th anniversary of the Abolition Act. there are a whole raft of 'activities' going on. I think it is a good time to raise the issue of human trafficking today ( i.e. we think 'slavery' per se has been #abolished# but what with scanty/negligible rights for say domestic workers in many countries in the world, and human trafficking - 'slave' labour is still well and alive today.

oh - and it's useful if we all remember all of our societies were involved in the slave trade - including the 'Islamic' world. a lot of people seem to forget that conveniently.
