The Great Mosque at Cordoba, which is one of the world’s most beautiful buildings, was not built to celebrate the victory of Muslims over Visigoths in 711, so it is not a ‘victory mosque’. It was developed over three hundred years, it held a library of over a million volumes, and was the focal point of what became under Muslim rule one of the largest and most sophisticated cities in Europe. If you visit the mosque you will see that when Spanish Christians conquered Cordoba in the 13th century they hacked out part of this beautiful building and stuck a completely out of place church in the middle of it – quite explicitly a ‘victory church’, in fact. Later on the Christian kings expelled Jews and Muslims from Spain – under the Muslims there had been a fair degree of religious toleration. I don’t think Christians have anything to celebrate in this story, and they would be well advised not to mention Cordoba at all.

Wow who is that guy? he totally takes her apart. I’ve never seen anything close on CNN. I love it when she says “We’re all Americans!” Cheers for posting.
